+173Carver Posted November 24, 2024 Posted November 24, 2024 Hello Waymarkers (the few, the proud), I can't find a category that skywalks (what my local area refers to them as, aka skyways/skybridges) would fit in, can this be a new category? Urban: I think it would be helpful and interesting to see skywalks marked to help identify where other points of view can be had in and of a city or maybe if its raining able to take a drier route. I imagine public and private skywalks can be listed, with art identified within or external if applicable, floor levels noted from both entrances, and logging pictures taken inside and outside encouraged. Rural(as the proper descriptive term evades me): I mean to imply skywalks that provide an elevated or suspended view of a natural vista, like a valley or waterfall. The Grand Canyon comes to mind. I would think most of these would pair nicely and frequently with Scenic overlooks. Writing was not my strong suit through school so I hope this is coherent enough, apologies for punctuation errors. Thank you for your time and attention. I'm looking forward to feedback and questions. 173Carver Quote

I worry that there are so few of these worldwide, but hopefully I am wrong. The first one that comes to mind in the US is the one at the Grand Canyon and you are most definitely not allowed to take cell phones and cameras onto it. 1 Quote
+elyob Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 (edited) I am interested. In some wintery cities, such as Calgary, there are dozens of skywalks (86 in Calgary). In Calgary, they are known as Plus 15s. Would all of these skywalks be potential waymarks? Edited December 4, 2024 by elyob 1 Quote

I don't see why not but I will need help defining what would qualify in this potential new category. Quote
+GeoTrekker26 Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 A quick Google search reveals it refers to the elevation of the bridge. 1 Quote

I don't imagine this structure would have global presence issues. The first international skybridge that came to mind was the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After some more research I found Bridge of Sighs in Venice, Italy, Bridge of Aspirations in London, UK, the Linked Hybrid Skybridges in Beijing, China, and the skybridges of the Bahrain World Trade Center in Manama, Bahrain. I don't believe the Kingdom Centre Skybridge in Saudi Arabia would qualify cause it's a skybridge connecting to itself. I imagine a requirement for a potential Skybridge Category to require the skybridge to connect to/from at least two separate structures. Talking this out I'm realizing that skybridges and skywalks should be two different things, once again, skybridges being a bridge between to structures. A skywalk just a suspended or elevated pedestrian zone isolated from any structure, like the one at the Grand Canyon in Arizona or the Circular Pedestrian walkway in Lujiazui, China but that one would probably just fit under the bridges category itself maybe. I'll share some of my local skybridges by tomorrow Thank you for everyones feedback so far. Quote
+Country_Wife Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 (edited) How would you separate "skywalks" out from pedestrian overpasses? Rule out anything that crosses over a roadway or rail line? Edited December 25, 2024 by Country_Wife Quote
