An American Tourist In LONDON

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am coming to London the first week of April. I have never been to England and was hoping for some help from the locals. If anyone knows of caches that are easy walking distance from the tube. Could you please send me the geocache link. I already have paddington dare. I also have the 6 sherlock holmes and Tombraider II. If you are familiar with any of the others near the tube stations please send me the links. I was hoping to get some caching in plus I have some bugs I need to leave your way.

Thanks in advance,

From Buckhurst Hill station on the Central LIne you could walk to:

Cold War No More

and/or

The Wilderness

From Chingford (mainline) station you can do:

Obelisk on the Prime Meridian Line

and/or

Epping Forest Walk

From Cutty Sark on the DLR you can do:

Prime Meridian Cache

and/or

Whiskey Galore

(Both Virtual Caches with loads to see/do in the area)

Hope that Helps

Cold War No More is nice because it's almost rural in location, yet only about 1.5 miles from the tube (Buckhurst Hill, Central Line).

You could also try "London's First"...

I forget the tube line it's near, but you should be able to find it in your A-Z.

You *do* have an A-Z, don't you? Ooops ... Better get one! icon_wink.gif

I want to thank everyone. I did see "Londons First..." Had gone missing. I originally had it on my list because it's only a couple miles from where I'm staying (across from Hyde Park). That was a problem because that was gonna leave me with 7 virtuals and 1 actual cache. I have at least 4 Travel Bugs I need to drop off and I didn't want to leave them all in one cache. You guys(and or ladies) have all solved that problem icon_razz.gif . I'm gonna evaluate all the finds you have sent me and decide which ones I can go to. If you find anymore please feel free to post them. I don't leave for another 11 days. Virtual sightseeing one's are also welcome. Two more questions though:

1. Out of curiosity - what are the rules of caching in London. For example so far the only place I've heard you can't place a cache in America are National Parks. So Almost all our parks have them (In the DFW area). Is this prohibited in London?

2. the tapir asked if I have my A-Z? Don't know exactly what this is? icon_confused.gif

Once again Thank You All and keep 'em coming icon_smile.gif

The A-Z (pronounce it "A to Zed") is the standard book of street maps for London and environs. Essential ... even the locals get lost without one!

Enjoy your visit, and tell us how it went!

I guess this comes down to common sense, mostly, but the one thing that doesn't always seem to occur to some visitors is this:

Don't place a physical cache anywhere where it might be mistaken for a terrorist's bomb or it's likely to get blown to pieces if it's spotted. Caches at Paddington and Heathrow caused us a little anxiety recently, even though they were micro-caches.

Mind you, folks in the US are starting to discover this too, if the accounts of caches being destroyed explosively over there are anything to go by...

Hope you enjoy your visit. icon_smile.gif

There are several caches in London parks. I don't know of any restrictions that might be in force. That might just be because the relevant authorities haven't found out about geocaching yet. OTOH it is definitely a bad idea to plant caches near or in public buildings - stations are an especially bad idea. You'll notice that no London station has any litter bins (trash cans in American I think) on it. This is a security feature.

A-Z is the London streetmap to own. The only problem is that the coordinate system is not based on lat/long so it could be hard to cross reference the locations of caches.

If it's close to where you are staying, "London's First..." may still be worth a visit. As I said in the log, it MAY still be there and it's just my own ineptitude that prevented me from finding it. (I've missed 'em before, you know!).

If nothing else, it's a nice park to walk through.

I'd definitely go and look for it. If I remember correctly, it has quite a good view of London even if the cache has gone. It's quite close to Tombraider 2 as well.

London's first is back on my list. I had definitely planned on doing tombraider II. Wanted to do Tombraider I, but not sure because it seems it takes quite a while to do. Can someone let me know if it is a multi-cache in one area where you can walk it all, or does it hop around where you need a car?

I'd also like to know this, as I'm planning a Tombraider I assault soon ....

I've done it, so here's the deal:

You take the train from Waterloo station in London to Brookwood. That's about half an hour. The cache itself... well I don't want to give too much away but it's several locations in one cemetry. You may say "one cemetry, that's OK" but it is a big cemetry probably a mile from end to end. There's even a section for US servicemen killed during the Second World War.

It took me several hours over two days to do the cache, but I mis-entered one set of coordinates on my GPS and spent an hour searching for a clue in the wrong place. Also I did it during the winter when it gets dark at 4pm. I think it can be done in an afternoon.

ps: Please PRINT out the images before you go.

(smile) JeremeyP will explain why ..

There are vital clues on the pictures. Some of the digits on the tombstones have been replaced by Scotty's special symbols. You need to know which ones in order to break the code which tells you the final cache location.

When we were there, although we could identify the victims tombs from the less detailed photos we did have, we couldn't crack the code so I haven't done the cache yet.

Thanks for your efforts, Chris. I for one really appreciate them.

Now be prepared for people saying ... "but why didn't you do this, this and ... that?"

But wait ... you already knew to expect that! You work in IT for City traders!

Chris, just wanted to let you know there are two Sherlock 1 - The Game is Afoot. They're both right next to each other. Not sure if this is correct or not. Thanks, Again.

Probably because you can hit the cache from either tube station. At least I think that is the reason.

Alex,

Yup that is right - I wasn't sure whether to do this as a lot of them can be reached from more than one tube. Be grateful for opinions.

I was up amersham way today and noticed some more caches that can go on the map if you like a long walk. So I might redo the map with Green caches for close to station, yellow for within 2 miles and red for "I wouldn't walk that far but people do you know" soes that sound sensible?

Not only sensible (and rather funny), but "above and beyond the call of duty".

It will certainly make things easier for cachers ... but don't forget the balance betwen 'easier' and 'so easy it defeats the purpose of the game'.

Thanks again for your efforts....

Right - finally finished the new version with all the caches I could work out how close they were to the station. You can find it at the link below

Chris, I wanted to thank you for all your time and effort. I left FOUR travel bugs in your cache. I believe this might be a record for the most in one cache at any given time. We had a wonderful time in London and want to thank all of the locals for a fantastic time. I have a great story about an attempted mugging in Soho, but will save that for another time as I am still jet lagged. Kudos to all in the UK, you are truly incredible people.
