Caches Deleted from List Appear in Downloaded Data

Recommended Posts

Seen with this bookmark list: https://www.geocaching.com/plan/lists/BMDC6F3, Android app

This originally was for my trip to Utah in September 2024.  I had downloaded the data for that list to the phone for that trip.  I deleted all the caches off it, filled it with the Springfield, MO trip caches, and when I downloaded it to my phone, it had all the caches from Utah, a few from when I was planning the trip and later decided on a new direction, as well as the Springfield ones.  Between the two trips, I deleted the downloaded data from the menu option next to the bookmark list in the app.  I have done everything outside of clearing data/reinstalling the app as I am currently on that Springfield trip and don't want to lose what I have.  Makes the caching day a little more interesting when I don't know where I'm going, and it makes performance of loading the list on the map noticeably slower.

Screenshots show that there should be 177 caches in the bookmark list, but there's far more than that showing on the map.

On the app I would zoom in to the geocaches on the trip you do want to keep. Click on the three dots at the top right, and select add all to list, which you will add to a newly created list. Once you confirm the new list is correct, delete the old one. Now you can download for offline use.

Problem is there are caches which I originally added but removed in later iterations of planning that are still in that list.  I ran across several of these that were on my phone, but were not loaded into my Garmin.  Mildly annoying and shouldn't happen if I wipe the downloaded data and re-download it.

I made changes to one of my cache pages a few days ago, and checked the page on my App and it was the page from several cache page updates ago.  I tried refreshing it every way I could think of (I had started by refreshing the List), and eventually deleted/reinstalled the App.  Now the current cache page shows.  I really don't like The App, and The App doesn't like my phone, (Samsung S22).  So I've stuck with my Garmin GPS for actual Geocaching information.  That's why these kinds of things aren't much of an issue to me in the field.  But I'll try it out with Lists and see if I'm getting the same thing as you.  I wish you luck getting positive action with this.  TPTB don't even reply to my threads about App bugs, let alone fix them.

I wonder if sometimes the database gets "stuck", that it stops updating cache info, even lists.  As I said, I wasn't even able to un-stick it, when my cache page wouldn't update.  I haven't checked other cache pages to see if it was just my page, or more widespread.  Does this mean that everyone or anyone using The App is now stuck viewing my out-dated cache description?  I wonder.

Have you inspected the cache pages that are not being deleted?  It may be useful to note if those pages are not only un-deleted from the List, but also not current in the App compared to the web site.  For example, do they have the most recent Activity (such as logs)?  In fact, are all the caches in your Lists ("Deleted" or not) also not being updated?

There doesn't appear to be anything special about the caches in the list.  Guess to work around this, I need to create a new list every time, and only download information as the last thing I do before heading out.  Hopefully I don't forget.

I saw this yesterday, I'd assumed it was because I'd previously downloaded the list to my phone, then refreshed it without deleting the previously saved offline data. But I was seeing caches I knew I'd deleted from the list.

I went back last night and removed more caches from the list, and today, I deleted the old offline data and did a fresh download. I am now seeing the 412 caches that I expect to see and none of the recently deleted caches.
