+daywalk Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 After years of reliably downloading PQs, last week my Oregon 700 suddenly stopped showing the downloaded PQ of geocaches. Oddly enough the downloaded PQ of waypoints does show up. It doesn't make any difference whether I download the cache/s by using EasyGPS or by directly moving the download into the Garmin GPX folder - the cache PQ is there in the Garmin folder but doesn't show up on the screen, yet the waypoints in the same folder do show up. I can record tracks and manually add waypoints as usual - it only seems to be cache downloads that are not working. I have deleted waypoints and deleted archived tracks from the Garmin, in case there was any space issue, although there should still be plenty of space. And I've done a reset. Nothing helps. Any ideas what the problem might be and what to try next? Quote
+barefootjeff Posted October 29, 2024 Posted October 29, 2024 Have you checked your filter settings? I once accidentally bumped one of those (the D/T range slider) and it took me days before I figured out why some caches were showing but others not. Quote
+barefootjeff Posted October 29, 2024 Posted October 29, 2024 The other thing to try is to remove the PQ file, shut down the device and let it fully start up, then shut it down again and reinstall the file. It happened more on older models, but sometimes the internal index file can become corrupted which stops the caches from showing. Rebooting without the cache files present causes it to rebuild its index from scratch. Quote
+daywalk Posted October 29, 2024 Author Posted October 29, 2024 Thanks for your help barefootjeff. I've done as you suggested, but still the same result. Both the caches file and waypoints file from the PQ are in the Oregon's GPX folder, but only the waypoints show on the screen. I've updated the GPS software as well so it's on V6. Ah well, thank goodness we have the phone app as backup! Quote

Ah well, thank goodness we have the phone app as backup! barefootjeff's post about filters is plausible. Garmins sometimes develop changes in settings, and it's possible to have filters set on all caches or all attributes, so that no caches display. Those settings tend to be tough to find, and they're not all in one place. Are the caches also now appearing as "Waypoints"? If everything has become a Waypoint, maybe the database is messed up. If you're certain that all filters are set up OK, here's a thread about how to take more drastic measures with SQL: Edited October 29, 2024 by kunarion Quote
+muffinn Posted November 6, 2024 Posted November 6, 2024 I have a similar problem on my Oregon 700 - where are cache filters adjusted. I only see the question mark caches at the moment? Quote

I only see the question mark caches at the moment? Go here: https://www.gpsrchive.com/Oregon 7x0/index.htm Then in the menu, drill down to Setup - Geocaching - Filters. There are some selection screens where you can turn filters on and off. Be sure those screens have the various filters set up the way you like. Edited November 6, 2024 by kunarion 1 Quote
+daywalk Posted December 2, 2024 Author Posted December 2, 2024 Ah - yes indeed, the DT filter had changed its settings to show only T3 caches. Once I found the correct filter and reset it, all the caches showed again. What a relief. Thank you all so much for your help! 2 Quote
robertlipe Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 <rant> That's another dumb thing that has messed up customers for over ten years with such an easy "fix". If the unit had said "1234 loaded, 1234 filtered, 0 displayed" (or something to give you a hint that it knew there were more and it was holding back and "something about filters" ).you'd have had a hint that'd have been searchable even if it didn't sound familiar. Bonus points for making the (filtered) bit into a button or link that takes you to the filter in question. Links aren't really party of the ux and work badly in spades, so it could be a button that only surfaces if most are hidden or something. So many annoying UX problems in Garmins devices have straightforward solutions. Hire some user experience people. Do some studies. Act on the feedback you've already received. We're 20+ years into similar "I loaded waypoints for my upcoming flight, but when i search, they're GONE!" style problems. If they'd listen to their own tech support (or the people here that have answered these questions a hundred times) they could make these things way more likeable. </rant> Quote
