Neos2 Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 It's not too soon to start thinking about International EarthCache Day 2024! We will celebrate it from Friday, October 11 through Sunday, October 13, 2024. How will you commemorate the date? Invite people to join you at your EarthCache to learn a bit more from the awesome CO? Take a walk to an EarthCache you have not yet visited (You can earn a souvenir during those days for visiting an EarthCache and fulfilling the requirements) However you celebrate the day, please post here to let us all know what EarthCache you visited and tell us a little about your visit. It's been quite a while since there were any new ECs close to home, so International EarthCache Day generally means a long drive somewhere. Last year I did "Grand Canyon" (GCA9FJ2) in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, about a two hour drive each way from here, and this year I have my sights set on "Potholes @ Boat Harbour" (GC4A7EF) near Port Stephens, a similar distance north of here. For the souvenir weekend, low tide is late morning so I'm just hoping the seas aren't too big for me to safely get out to it. There's also a nearby new virtual I'm keen to do plus a DNF from earlier in the year that I want to avenge now that the CO's replaced the missing cache, so it should be a fun day if the weather gods permit. 2 Quote
+Awesnap Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 I look forward to this weekend every year! Because if you own a bunch of Earthcaches like I do, you get swarmed with answers for 3 to 4 days. It's like the Super Bowl of being an Earthcache owner. I may be in the minority, but I really enjoy tracking each log and responding to all answers. Last year I had 118 logs, and 140 for the year before. I just love it, as I treat it as a test of my organizational abilities. I am hoping I can find one, but that is tough because I eagerly track down any of the lower terrain earthcaches within a 100 mile radius after they publish. 1 1 Quote
Neos2 Posted October 10, 2024 Author Posted October 10, 2024 Just another reminder of the special day coming up. Remember to claim your souvenir this weekend. I've made my plan for an EarthCache to visit on International Earthcache Day. Barnhill Cemetery and the Weathering process EarthCache GC8V4MM It's pretty simple as Earthcaches go, and a topic I am very familiar with from teaching Earth & Space Science in a local high school for so many years. But I love old cemeteries, and I cache with a woman who was not a big fan of EarthCaches before she started caching with me. This is one she can figure out without my help and feel good about -- and she likes old cemeteries, as well. Plus, I'm still babying a total knee replacement, and she is just three weeks out of surgery on a shoulder replacement and this EarthCache is one we can walk right up to. So, it's a win-win choice all around. Most of the other Earthcaches we both need within 100 miles have much higher terrain ratings. I'll be back with photos if it's a good cache for those. Quote
+Ringrat Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 I usually struggle on Earthcaching weekend as it's the same weekend as Canadian Thanksgiving, and I usually travel Thursday evening and Monday, being stuck at my parents' home in between doing autumn yard work. This year I'm travelling Friday morning instead so have the opportunity to detour along the way to find one. The one I've picked isn't too far off the highway, but has a few stages so isn't one I would usually make time for while passing through at night. +barefootjeff Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 The weather gods were smiling on me today for my drive north to Port Stephens to do the Potholes @ Boat Harbour EarthCache (GC4A7EF). I arrived about an hour and a half after low tide but there were still no waves breaking over the rock shelf, making it easy to get the measure of this huge pothole. I'm glad I had an 8 metre tape measure with me. This was an EC I could really immerse myself in! 3 Quote
