+FranTheFran Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 I noticed that many caches in my area is starting to go DNF. I did put a note (with link to the obituary) in one that has an owner request on it and I noticed today that the person has now escalated it so the situation is hopefully in good hands. But now I'm curious to what happens. 2 1 Quote
+MNTA Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 Let nature that its course and the caches will eventually fall into disrepair and will be archived unfortunately it means eventually several DNFs will need to be filed and months later they will be flagged for the reviewer and then after months they will be archived. You could monitor them and any you find like the one you mention and if possible try to find it. If you DNF file the OAR and follow up in a month with a RAR. Help speed up the process a bit by following the rules of course. But there is no automatic archival process. 1 Quote

Cachers are able to let Groundspeak know if they have particular wishes for their caches, such as having another cacher take over their hides. If that wasn't done here, folks with access to the account can take steps to adopt out or archive the caches. If that's not done, a reviewer may eventually have to archive them for lack of an active owner. 3 1 Quote

Is it documented anywhere publicly? (I haven't done a thorough scan of the help, I'll admit.) Thanks. For the record (if this is the place to do it), I'd be happy for any interested cachers to adopt my hides, should I croak suddenly before I could make more explicit plans. I know of one cacher who has written his "geocaching will" on his profile page, listing individuals who he would like to be offered specific caches, others are to be offered to the local community, others to be archived. I expect that's not an "official" thing but I would hope Groundspeak would honour our wishes if we were to list them on our profile pages. 4 Quote
+Clongo_Rongo Posted September 12, 2024 Posted September 12, 2024 not me - but i have seen this on a CO's profile when i looked at the profile on a cache in the USA Quote

They're really just a listing service and I doubt they'd offer caches out for adoption. I'd think a better plan would be to write something like "I offer my caches to <insert specific geocacher here> for adoption upon my death", after having made arrangements for that geocacher to take on the geocaches. 1 Quote
+MNTA Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 Don't adopt runoff the mill caches. Refresh the game by doing a new listing. 1 1 Quote

Sorry to keep you hanging, there was discussion about it when the terms of use changed. I know that's not official, but it's what I recalled. Edited September 17, 2024 by hzoi 1 Quote
