Denmark and Finland have now regions -> update in Waymarking statistics database

Recommended Posts

I don't know, if you already have noticed, but since a few days, maybe two weeks, there are regions for Denmark and Finland allowed in waymarks.

It took some time for me to add the regions to the statistics database (i.e. finding and adding the polygons to the maps, extending the import program and running a full import do get the regions to the waymarks). Also looked, if there are more countries which now have regions, but these seemed to be the only ones. Then I started correcting the entries that were now without the regions for myself and the approximate twenty categories, I'm officer in. I know of at least one person, that did the same.

Now I ask you to improve the quality and take a look at your own waymarks and add the regions to the waymarks that are missing them - if unsure which region your waymark should be located in, click on your name in the Waymarking statistics database (https://wm.familie-frohne.net/count_user.php) and select the tab "MISSING" if it is enabled (otherwise you are lucky, because then there are no missing entries for you). There you find a list of the waymarks with missing regions and a hint for the right region from my import program.

In case you are an officer, you can help, too, by selecting the links with the missing regions in your officers list.

The corrections will be in the statistics on the next full import run (usually at the end of the month, but I will start it manually on the next weekends).

Ask me, if you need help.

Thanks for correction,

Erik.

Thanks for your work!  You're correct - the only recent changes were for Denmark and Finland, which became the 28th and 29th nations to have their regions reflected on Geocaching.com.

Terrible amount of work! Groundspeak did same on geocaching. Lot of debate has occur due this sudden change.

Like Åland islands should be one of regions, not like independent country.

With limited exceptions, Geocaching.com follows the United Nations' UN/LOCODE List (ISO 3166) to define highest-level political subdivisions.  If you disagree with the inclusion of an entry on this list, or an omission, you could ask the UN.

So, these all goes to category review?

No, not really:

  • Each waymarker may edit his own waymarks without further review needed from the officers. It was approved before and as owner you should be able to document changes to your waymark (e.g. the statue was moved or the shop closed).
  • Each officer may edit the waymarks of his category - this change may be not noticed by the owner of the waymark.
  • Each waymarker may edit some other waymarkers waymark. That edit is then sent to review by the officers of the category.

This must also mean all geocaches have to edit too.

Probably, if there is not a software way to do it automatically (i.e. a database script or service called) for each geocache in the database. I used something similar to find the suggestions made by the import program.

As I said, I'll start the import on the next weekends manually. That means, I'll do it tomorrow right after work (~3 p.m. in Germany). The full import usually runs 24 to 36 hours, so you should have actual data on Saturday evening, latest on Sunday morning ...

But I can do you a favor and make a "small" import of the categories you mentioned.

There are certain categories, of which I am an officer, where I am not allowed to modify

I wonder if it was an oversight or intentional. The leader can edit all permissions of officers.

I updated my database to reflect the changes to the Norwegian regions (i.e. added the values and the polygons to the database), updated my waymarks and the ones in the categories, where I'm officer to the new values. Then I started the next full import to get the changed waymarks imported.

But I can see, the update of the Norwegian regions was not flawlessly done on Waymarking.com itself, as there are some Norwegian waymarks now missing their country (e.g. WM4HX).

As I encounter them, I'll issue an edit request. Would be nice, if these could be handled soon ...

Corrected,

Birdwatching Locations
Current and Former Exchanges
Draw Wells
Exact Replicas
Fish and Chips Restaurants
Grave of a Famous Person
Methodist Churches
Moving Bridges
Red Telephone Boxes
Timelines
Town and Village Pounds
UK Post Offices
Unique Artistic Door Handles and Knockers
Watercraft Rentals (Human Powered)
Wooden Church Artefacts

Except... Grave of a Famous Person has two Waymarks I can edit, but wont let me save.

Both require dates in D/M/YYYY format. A birth or death before 1000 is not accepted as it's YYY and not YYYY

I have seen the same problem once: the poster added the date to the long description with a short explanation and entered the date 1/1/1000.

Thanks for your corrections.
