+Ersjsss Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 A good friend of mine has some Geocaches placed in my County and has asked if I'll adopt them since she is going thru some medical issues right now stemming from a nasty car accident. I said I'd be happy to except for one thing... would my finds of these caches still be legit finds if I adopt them? I'm wanting to be able to log a find for the county century challenge once it is created for my County. I know I've got over 100 finds now but many of those would be the ones I'm adopting. Thank you! +GeoElmo6000 Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 Yes they would. I adopted a year 2002 virtual cache that I found many years ago when the CO decided to archive it, and it still counts as a find to me. 2 Quote
Keystone Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 As an alternative to adoption, you could just agree to maintain your friend's caches while they recover from their accident. Put all the caches on your watchlist, and visit any that have reported problems. If you proceed with adoption, the Challenge Checker and the Challenge Cache's conditions will answer whether you are qualified. 2 Quote

I'd say so. I don't remember any particular issues, but there are some stats that may look odd. I went a step further with an adopted cache. The Cache Owner moved away and offered to adopt 2 caches to me. So I adopted them. But I decided to find the one I had no Smilie on. That is, if I'm to be maintaining it, I need to know exactly where it is... I need to find it. Fortunately, I didn't have to DNF that one. Quote
+NanCycle Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 The alphanumeric list of caches found with CO names will change. I had completed the list, but when I adopted a cache from CO name starting with "8", that stat was taken away from me. Just recently I did find another cache by another CO whose name started with "8" 1 Quote
+GeoElmo6000 Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 I kept the CO's name on the cache I adopted, but tacked on a "(adopted by GeoElmo6000)'" after. Give the original CO the credit. 2 Quote
+pantadeusz Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 Remember to log your finds before you adopt the caches though, I believe it will be impossible to do so after. 2 Quote

Is that a new thing? In 2014, I adopted a cache, then Found it two days later. No problem. But it's good to find it first anyway, for reasons. 1 Quote

That's good to know. I think at the time, I tried it to log the Find just to see if it would work. But I should have gone to find it, before officially adopting it. In case it was gone, or at least so I know exactly where it is and what it looks like. That particular one was tricky. Quote

I don't recall exactly when the change was, but yes, it was changed, clearly sometime after 23 August 2014. I tried a forum search, but it's not cooperating. Anyway. One can attend one's own events, but one cannot find one's own cache anymore. Quote

I believe it was sometime in 2017 - We started caching in March and you COULD log your own caches for a brief time, then it changed. We had no hides at that point so it was moot, but it's never seemed right to log a find on my own cache anyway.... Quote

+Mudfrog Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 Turkey Creek South was the very first cache I found way back in February of 2002. Found One Eyed Tree Monster in 2005. Adopted both a few years later. GC dot com stats show both, found and owned. Quote

I'd forgotten all the gnashing of teeth about not being able to log NM on one's own hide. Quote
