+BigDaddy&BabyDoll Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Hello, we were just recently at an earth cache that had a requirement of sending a picture of the area with our GPS. What does this mean? All we have is our premium app. Do we need to have something different? Quote

Some Earthcaches may require a photo for specific geological reasons (maybe use your phone's camera App in that case), but if that one is saying to take a picture of the place in general while holding "your GPS" up so it's in the shot, that's something you obviously can't do. Here's some Earthcache info: https://www.geosociety.org/GSA/GSA/fieldexp/EarthCache/guidelines/home.aspx Guideline 6 mentions photos in logs. Edited July 30, 2024 by kunarion Quote
+Smitherington Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 If you cache with your phone it is hard to take a photo using the phone with your GPS (your phone) in the picture. Some will accept a photo that includes part of the geocacherq in it, or some personal item, or a paper with your caching name and the current date written on it. One photo shows part of my hat & glasses. The second has my info and my personal trackables. The original photo showed the entrance to a church in Spain. The third shows two cacher names in front of a statue, a virtual cache. 1 Quote

What does this mean? It means it's probably an older earthcache. In the early days of geocaching, phones were not so smart, and there were no geocaching apps; people found caches with GPS receivers, or some just using maps. Requiring someone to submit a picture with their GPS in it was likely done to ensure that geocachers were actually visiting as geocachers, and not just using old vacation photos to get a find. As others have suggested, you may substitute a "picture of your GPS" with a picture of you, or something else that identifies you. This is the GPS brick we started with, though we soon upgraded to something more accurate and user-friendly: 1 Quote

That specifically says, "A photo of you and your GPS with the REST AREA BUILDINGS in the background is not required". So you can skip that part. Quote

+vw_k Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 Photo requests like this are usually just to help confirm that you were actually there and haven't just guessed the answers remotely. I usually take a photo of my username written on something such as a piece of paper or my hand, held up so it shows the location in the background. Quote
