Problem with notifications (Android) / How do notifications work

Recommended Posts

Hello there,

i have the following problem:

- I used the Android app exlusively in the beginning and had no problems. I received notifications when I received a message through the message center

- At some point it stopped but not all together and I "randomly" received notifications (that was about in May)

- Shortly after I also installed the app on my work phone (iPhone / iOS) -> there i always get notifications. Ever since I do not receive notifcations on my Android phone anymore

How do the notifications work from a technical point of view? I want to test more and maybe help bugfixing.

I want to use the app on my Android device mainly since it's my private phone. However it is sometimes usefull to have a second phone (battery, coverage) and frankly the Wherigo player for Android is useless.

How does the GC App determine which client gets the notifications when there are multiple clients to one user?

I thought maybe it will use the "latest" client, therefore I deleted and reinstalled the app on my Android, but it did not change anything. iPhone still gets all the notifications.

It would be great to get some insights from the programmers and maybe other people have similiar topics.

Thanks! dr.dentz

We use both an iPhone and one Android. The iPhone always gets the message notifications seconds before the Android. Same account.

Have you double-checked your app settings in case something accidentally got toggled off?

Thanks for your reply.

Yes notifications are activated and battery optimization deactivated. So the phone should not mess with the GC app in the background.

This problem started recently for me as well

Are you speaking about no notifications on Android in general or in combination with another phone?

Just a thought...

Have you tried toggling it off.

Then back on?

Sadly it did not do the trick. Both options. (Notifcation settings + battery settings)

I've been having this trouble for a while now. Sometimes notifications come many hours late. It's most unfortunate when someone is messaging me about a cache I own, as I often don't get a notification until long after they've left the cache site.

Now I uninstalled the app on iPhone and reinstalled it on my android but it still doesn't work.

Now I don't get notifications anywhere. Great /s

Maybe some additional information to get a devoloper onboard here.

Pixel 7a, Android 14 with latest updades, App Version 9.56.0 installed through Google Play

iPhone SE, iOS 17.6, App Version 9.57.0 installed through AppStore

As mentioned before, I now uninstalled the App on my iPhone which did not change anything on my Android. Then I deinstalled and reinstalled it on Android, logged back in, gave permission for notifications and deactivated power-saving but still have no notifications on Android.

It seems like this has been an issue in the past, but for me it is unclear how the fix looked like from a technical point of view or what a user can do to help / check on the client side.

As other people in this thread wrote, it seems like it is an ongoing issue. There was also a similar feedback when I open a thread on reddit

I've also just discovered I'm not receiving Message Centre notifications on the app (I'm getting the ones promoting Cosmic Quest, though). Someone messaged me today about a problem at one of my AL locations but nothing came through on the phone and it wasn't until I got home that I saw the email. By then it was too late.

Thank you for your feedback.

I also tested it with a second account and also on another android device I have.

This time I used App v.9.56.0 again on Android 11 (Samsung Galaxy Tab A / SM-T510)

The phenomenom seems to be independend from the account. The notifications only pop up on iPhone. Independently if they are sent from the website or Android.

Notifications on Android do not pop up on any device of mine. Wheter sent from other Android device / iPhone nor the website.

Maybe this helps.

I got caught out by this again today. The CO of a cache I logged FTF field log on sent me a Message Centre message, but I got no notification of it on my Android phone and didn't see it until I'd returned home and saw it on my PC. I used to get notifications fairly reliably on the phone but no more.

Edit to add: As far as I can tell, I have all notifications from the app enabled.

I can't find any settings within the app itself that relate to notifications, though. Are there any hidden away anywhere?

Well I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. But it makes me feel really bad when someone is asking for help at one of my hides, because I know what it's like to do that myself, and then wait and hope they respond.  Getting back to them the next day does no good.  Only started having this problem here in the past few months, that's why I figured it was something I did.  Hope it gets resolved for good (and for the good of the community).

Checking in here!

It appears we have a fix for this bug in the works and hope to release it soon.

If you still experience issues after 9.60.0 please create a new thread or post again what you are experiencing and we will dive in again.
