Mistake Retrieving Travel Bug From Cache

Tonight I retrieved a trave bug from a cache I had found. I did not realize the TB was not at the cache I found it. I should have discovered it first. Because I retrieved it, it shows I picked it up in a Missouri cache. I actually found it in a Kentucky cache. I tried to edit the log, but it won't let me change it to discovered. How to I correct my mistake? Should I ask the owner to delete my log so I can discover it in the correct cache?

Is it the dream big trackable? Can you delete the log yourself? And then grab the trackable from its currently listed location?

Yes, it is the dream big trackable. That is interesting you knew the trackable. How?

I was able to delete the log, but not able to un-retrieve it. I ended up making it visit the cache I found it in so it could collect that mark on the map. If there is a way to un-retrieve a TB I couldn't find.

Deleting the log doesn't undo the action, as you found. Discovering it wouldn't have done anything, because that doesn't set a new location.

Yes, the way you did it sounds correct: Retrieve it from the cache where it "wasn't" anymore, Visit it to the cache in which you found it, and continue moving on.

Be careful about "deleting" Trackable logs.  Logs that are actions will link people, caches and items to a point in time, so deleting the log removes the information, not the action.  Then the next log, the correction, compounds the problem.  It's often better to make a new Note instead, or add some text to the original "incorrect" log.  As you see, a "Visit" log isn't quite right, either.  But in your Visit log, you can then explain what happened.

As TriciaG says, you did good.  If I find a Trackable item that's all messed up, I often log a Discover and leave it there.  I rarely try to unscramble Trackables anymore (it can be unbelievably complicated), but it's a nice thing to do. :anicute:

Similar I guess, I usually only Discover Trackables anymore.

I still use a GPSr, so Trackables would come home before I knew what I was in for (different cache, held for many years n dumped, etc.).

So many have issues that (I feel) it's easier to tell the TO their Trackable's at least still safe in a cache, and where.

Sometimes we get deleted by a grouch, as some don't want Discover logs.  I'm fine with that, it was meant to help them...  ;)
