Are we mainstream yet?

Recommended Posts

I was reading the weekly IT supplement in the Guardian over lunchtime. The lead article is about geolocational URLs - a concept of linking web pages to geographical locations which has been gaining growing popularity in blogging communities etc over recent months. There's a "box out" in the article which contains a glossary of half a dozen "geo" words, one of which is (you guessed it..)

"Geocaching: The name of choice for the GPS-assisted game in which handsets are used to look for a cache hidden in the real world."

...and that's all it says. I thought it was pretty unusual to see geocaching mentioned in a national newspaper in this particular context - a "throwaway" comment, that didn't need further explanation.

I wonder if we have a guardian journo in our midst... (gawd knows there's plenty of TV presenters lurking here nowadays icon_biggrin.gif )

It's what you get if you click on the link in my sig line. icon_wink.gif

It's short for 'web log'. There's a interesting article on their history here.

EDIT: Or, rather, 'blog' is short for 'web log'. Blogging, of course, is the act of keeping a blog.

I like the bit "-assisted".... makes you remember that the GPS gets you only so close, you have to do the last bit yourself!

Noone in their right mind would place a cache THERE....
