+bakerpro895 Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 Is it possible to check if a location is open to hide a cache before actually hiding it? I previously hid a cache but it was too close to a final for a Mystery Cache. I want to re-hide it however since the cache requires some installation that takes a lot of time I want to be sure to spot is open before I place the cache. Thanks! 1 Quote

The reviewer can check coordinates for you. https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=22&pgid=199 1 Quote
+MNTA Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 Reviewers should worry more about the quality of the hide and help new folks with being a successful CO. Ensure placment is good and meets land use requirements. Also address cache issues worldwide there are 282,328 enabled caches with an OAR flag on it. Not waste time checking coordinates. GS should figure out another way to avoid cheating, though their response seems to show they agree that cheating only hurts the cheaters so make the hiding process better. 1 2 1 1 Quote

I haven't ever thought of another way, but that would be pretty cool. I hesitate hiding in towns semi-near me since I'd need to visit and find a possible spot, message reviewer, then come back another time after the response. The cheating only hurts the cheaters is a wise premise. There are daft groups online with answers to almost every puzzle, so it's not like this is the last defense to stop all cheating; people will still find a way. That being said, any of the puzzles I've hidden, I want to be found, not remain elusive forever. 1 Quote

One way that worked great for me was to ask local Geocachers who've found everything. Write to them, ask at Events. Not only did I get info on available spots, I learned why the spots are available. Several of my caches are where nobody could keep one, and specially designed to endure. Quote
