Release Notes (Adventure Lab®: Highly recommended Adventures) - July 2, 2024

With this release (version 1.32.0), the Adventure Lab® team at Geocaching HQ introduces Highly recommended Adventures on the Adventure Lab® app, as well as a new filter so players can find these experiences more easily.

Highly recommended Adventures are selected using statistical tools that measure several factors, including whether players who completed an Adventure selected the Highly recommend checkbox added in a prior release.

On the Explore Map, Highly recommended Adventures will now have a “thumbs up” icon over the Adventure’s pin.

In the Filter menu, a new header called “Featured Adventures” has been added. This header includes two options. The first checkbox is an option to filter for “Highly recommended” Adventures. Players can select the checkbox to see only Highly recommended Adventures on the Explore Map. The second checkbox includes a pre-existing option to filter for Adventures that are “New within 30 days.”

In the Directory, the Adventure details card of Highly recommended Adventures will include a circular “thumbs up” icon overlaid on the preview of the Adventure’s cover image.

On the details page of a Highly recommended Adventure, a label will include a “thumbs up” icon and the phrase “Highly recommended.”

Where can I find a list of which completed adventures I highly favored?

Hi @Max and 99, thanks for sharing your interest in viewing a list of your completed Highly recommended Adventures. This feature is not presently available but we have the suggestion recorded.

Hi,
will this “thumbs up” icon over the Adventure’s pin be seen with the first who recommend the Adventure? Is there anywhere where you can see how many of the finders that gave 5 stars recommended the adventure? e.g. 10 from 30 have recommended it.

Or will there be soon a thumbs up at every Adventure...?

Would be nice if you could actively show and hide this...

I have the same question. I just noticed a recent adventure lab that has two reviews and is highly favored. I would think there'd be a minimum number of highly favored votes before it gets the thumbs up icon.

Hi @Max and 99, thanks for sharing your thoughts in this forum. Due to the varied nature of where Adventures are in the world and the existence of Adventures completed infrequently, the Adventures team decided not to add a minimum number of highly recommended checkbox selections for an Adventure to be highly recommended.

Additionally, although an Adventure may have few relatively written reviews, as with the Adventure you mentioned, there may be other "positive signals" that an Adventure should be highly recommended such as multiple players selecting the highly recommended checkbox.

Why is this second rating even needed? The star ratings should be enough. I mean if a ALC is rated with 4.5 stars in average that means to me that it is very good and thus it is definitely recommended.

With a dual rating system like this an 3.0 starred ALC could get a highly recommended status while a 4.5 rated ALC might not. And how fair is that?

(Not that 3.0 rated ALCs are bad but just to demonstrate the difference)

People rate ALs favorably for many reasons. Memorials and unique places seem to be highly favored, while a well done historical lab may not be. There should be a distinct set of guidelines to earn the red icon so that owners can use them when they set up their labs. It will improve quality. Otherwise, dispense with the thumbs up and retain the 1-5 system.
