No Way to Edit Logs in App?

Recommended Posts

I discovered geocaching through the official app, and to this day spend more time on it than on the desktop site. I want to be able to write thoughtful logs, but when I'm out and about it becomes such a chore. I like to be able to log caches as I find them, so my system has become logging them with the standard 'will update later' placeholder, and updating the logs to be more substantive when I get home. As much as it sounds like a first world problem, it is annoying having to take out my laptop to update these logs when I do everything else by the app. It baffles me that something as simple as updating text on a log has to be done exclusively on the desktop site versus the official app, especially when waypoints and notes are already accessible between both mobile and desktop.

Do others feel the same way? I feel like if there were more people like me, the app would've been updated by now. Or is there some technological hurdle I'm missing when it comes to editing logs through the app?

This is why drafts are helpful.

You are correct. You cannot edit the log in the app.

I don't enjoy typing on a tiny screen, nor especially editing.  My App logs are mostly Drafts that I edit at home.

I post the whole log, whether via App or PC, never the "will update later" thing.

But it is possible to edit a Draft within the App.  Tap "Found" again, or whatever the log is, and the previous Draft text is still there to edit.

As a cache owner, I'll probably never see anything but the "will update later" placeholder, because that's all that I'll get in the email notifications. The system doesn't send email notifications when you edit a log.

Thus, as a cache seeker, I never post placeholder logs. I use field notes drafts, and post a real log when I'm using a real keyboard.

I use voice to text to knock out my logs as I go, so I can normally get them done on site without much tapping on a phone screen. If there are errors or additions, I either open the cache page in a browser on my phone, or I edit later on the laptop.

That said, yes, it would be handy to be able to edit logs in the app.

Wow, that's disappointing. The point of me not making a log on the spot is because I want to be thoughtful about it, but my current process means that CO's won't see it... maybe I should just come up with a short quip instead going forward?

I see that everyone is recommending drafts, but when I want to try and personalize each cache experience, I feel like drafts just aren't helpful. The only use I can think of is writing down my thoughts on a puzzle for a mystery cache- most of my logs are talking about the experience/stories finding the cache on site. Unless I just don't understand the feature, I don't think it works for me.

You can put whatever you want in the field note draft. No one but you will see it until you turn it into a real log.

My process is to put a shorthand reminder in the field note draft. Later, when I'm using a real computer with a real keyboard, I use the shorthand reminder to write a real log.

If you want a note to yourself that no one else ever sees, then the Personal Cache Note would be an appropriate place. I use the Personal Cache Note for information about how I solved puzzles, as well as any hints provided when I confirmed my solution on Certitude. But that's completely different from field notes drafts.

Take a look at this Help Centre page on using drafts in the app. Drafts are just place-holders for logs that you can create in the field, then when you get home you can flesh them out and turn them into actual logs. On the website, any drafts you've created will appear on the Drafts page which you can access by clicking on Play on the top bar and then Drafts near the bottom of the drop-down list.

I don't use drafts often, but when I do, it's usually when I'm in the field and I want to remind myself of any struggle I had, or any fun thing I found at the coordinates. Like: we met a really nice lady who said she knew about the geocache and has fun watching people find it. Anything I'd want to include in the real log when I edit the draft at home and then submit it.

+1.

I often edit my logs and I've found it extremely annoying to need to go to the website to do it.

Not sure if somebody else already said this, but putting it out there:

You can edit drafts in the app. Save a draft, (which can be literally nothing, just a reminder that you found it), edit it on the drafts page on the computer or app, and post when you are ready. That's what I do and also what kept it possible for me to have relatively in depth logs that I posted in my hotel room when without a computer for 2 weeks.

You can also select "Open in browser" from the cache page in the app. This takes you to the web version of the cache.

yes, but it is not enjoyable. I personally very much dislike the mobile version of the website, and if you switch on "desktop mode", all craziness breakes loose.

Scrolling on the maps.... moves where the geocaches are. If I scroll to the right on the map, the geocaches come with me!!
