Geocaches in every county.

Recommended Posts

There's no souvenir for finding a cache in every county of a state - only for finding your very first cache in a state, province or country.

However, most US states have challenge caches requiring finds in all the counties in a State.  These are great geocaching goals to set your sights on!

I co-own the Pennsylvania All Counties Challenge, and I've also found a cache in every county of Delaware, Indiana, Maryland and Ohio.  Coloring in counties, and seeking the related challenge caches, is great fun!

You only mentioned the USA. What about other countries?  If the USA gets a souvenir, it would be only fair that every country had the same opportunity. Maybe too much work though for HQ. But then it is quite an achievement finding a cache in each council area in a state or territory. 128 councils alone in my neighbouring state, NSW. Have most of them. 137 in Western Australia, some of them very remote. 68 in South Australia, one at least you need to apply for official permission to visit. Etc. A lot of driving.

State of NSW. 128 councils.                                                           A map of WA with Poland and Texas to show size.

I did not mention other countries because I looked at the OP's profile and saw they live in Oregon, USA, and have cache finds only in their home state and two other western USA states.

If it makes you feel better, yes, I agree that Australia also doesn't have a souvenir for finding a cache in each council area within a state or territory.  I also agree that Australia is large, and it takes work to color in new council areas.  I only have twelve and it took a lot of driving to do that.

Also no.

...but since the USA has no such souvenir, it seems to be a non-issue, n'est-ce pas?

Some US states have only a few counties, but some have a lot more, including 8 with at least 100.

I suspect two reasons for the lack of county souvenirs. One is some countries probably don't have county equivalents. The other is that some counties have zero caches so for some states/provinces/regions getting every county is impossible.

I like the county maps on Project GC.  It gives me a reason to take a different route when I travel and it gives me goals for my geocaching activities.  6 states so far. Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Delaware, and Florida.  Pennsylvania this year I think.  I don't need a souvenir for each county.  Having it colored in is enough.

I agree. I have an event (non Geocaching) on in Adelaide later this year and I will drive to it from Canberra. It will be an indirect route, as there are four remaining council areas (counties) to tick off in Victoria. I have almost all the council areas in Victoria and might clear it out on that trip. Also might get one in a tiny council area in NSW I have missed on the way to Victoria. Then steer to a SideTracked cache on the Victorian/South Australian (SA) border, take in one or more council areas in SA, then attend the event in Adelaide. On a longer route home, take in some more council areas, get the last Web Cam left for me in Australia, and swing by Melbourne for some more SideTracked finds. Geocaching does take you to more places; I agree :D.

Tell me about it!  We had a non-Geocaching event in Chicago last week.  It's a 600 mile roundtrip drive from our home in Cincinnati.  But our "indirect route" put 1,900 miles on the car, and scored us cache finds in 71 counties.  In the process, we finished coloring in all 92 of Indiana's counties, plus a bunch more in Illinois and Wisconsin.  My map is now approaching @Smitherington levels.  The next states to finish coloring in are Michigan, Kentucky and West Virginia.

How does one go about starting a challenge? Or is that for another discussion?

I would start a new discussion/thread in the How Do I subforum . . . and clarify if you mean create a challenge cache for others to find, or begin work on a challenge cache yourself?

On side note, there was (or still is) an Oregon county challenge. But a condition of it is the cache containers cannot be micros that you find. That can be a wrinkle to your goal if you were on a road trip and selected the easiest ones along a road. I didn't qualify for the challenge to find its geocache but I did find a geocache in every Oregon county. That was my goal anyway.
