Favourite Caches and Pubs

Since me and Pid have completed most of our local caches I am hoping for a bit of inspiration as to which caches to do next. Does anyone have a particular cache which they though was really good? and who can recomend some fine pubs to have a drink at afterwards icon_smile.gif

My tip for best cache so far would have to be 'lead mines' which is pretty near to bolton if i remember rightly. It has the most amazing views and lakes, so if anyone is around there anytime try it!

My favourite Pub was the 'cricketers' which can be found around the corner from Hornets hide 4. Nice selection of Ales icon_smile.gif

Are you looking for any particular geographical area.

I can recommend the Cluedo Cache series in North Hampshire. One of them is very close to a pub, but I don't know what it is like.

The Cluedo Caches will take about a day to complete.

The second ten million caches were the worst too.

That will be No 3 "Fox Corner" The Fox pub is round the corner, some nice real ales average food

If you are looking for excellent food the plough not far from Cobham's quest is well worth a visit

We have a cache *in* a pub for the Cache hunt. It's a very very nice pub the likes of which you don't see anymore. In fact Chris was relucant to feature it for fear of making it too busy.

And the post cache stuff will be in a pub. There's quite a few interesting caches in the area for afterwards if you want to clock up some serious caching.

If you want a decent pub meal and a beer or many then try this one here.

Should see you right, if you get to the cache there's no mistaking the nearby pub since theres precious little else there.

A bit of a plug I suspect but given the thread I thought I'd risk mentioning the new Hornet's Hide 10. Could almost have been designed with this topic in mind (but wasn't). Check it out if you feel like it.

Well well, how's this for a VERY old post with some names from the past - and STILL geocaching from the days where you needed a handheld GPS. Which I incidentally have that same Magellan brick (sadly no longer needed in this day and age).

I wonder if anyone does old school hasdheld unit caching any longer ? Or iirc someone from this period used to do this at midnight ?

As they apparently exclaim in internet forums: "Holy thread resurrection, Batman!"

I am a mere newbie compared to you and the original participants above. But my Yellow Etrex has served me well for over 11 years, and is still in use, as you can just about see from this photo taken yesterday at Peddler's Pool on Mull.

How else do you hold your GPSr? Are there some that display in your goggles? I must be out of touch, but if you can have both hands free it sounds most useful.

In the old days (2004) I used a wrist-mounted GPSr (which freed your hands up) plus a smartphone with OS maps, GPS and cache descriptions (which took your hands to operate again) but these days rely on an Etrex 20, which does the same job but not quite as well, although it's more compact and robust.

Just like Milvus Milvus, we have been using a yellow Garmin Etrex since we started caching in 2006. I could be mistaken but I think SP is still using one too. Im sure there are lots of us out there.

We print off a geomap of the area so we can plan the best routes or alternative routes to get to the caches. We make field notes for each cache to enable easy logging.

We often go caching with Deadpebble and he has a unit which does all manner of stuff (including a parking sensor type thing which bleeps when you are at GZ). There have been a few times when the extras on his GPS have come in handy but he still doesn’t find half as many caches as we do!

I can see why a lot of people opt for the higher tech road but we have successfully set/found lots of caches with our simple trusty Etrex and will be happy to continue until circumstances dictate it is no longer possible.

As for pubs and caches, if there is one on the route, we can often be found availing ourselves of their hospitality ;) .
