Can you put the TB Name & Reference Code on a TB?

Recommended Posts

Is there a problem with having the TB name and Reference Code on the actual TB?

I know the Tracking Code of course needs to be on it in order for people to log it.

And i know you don't want to publish the Tracking Code.

But i haven't run across a TB that has the actual NAME of the TB on it.

Nor one with the REFERENCE CODE on it.

Is there a reason i'm not thinking of that you would NOT want to put this info on the actual TB or on the attached Tracking Code dog tag?

When a finder of the Trackable enters the Tracking Code, it leads you directly to the Trackable's page.

 - The Reference Number is there, top right of the details page.     I think it's simply not needed on the Trackable itself...

I have quite a few Trackables with their "actual name" on them (a lotta coins), seen a lot of homemade Trackables too, and all promotion Trackables have the Trackable's "actual name" on them as advertising.

"Virtual logging" of Trackables is allowed.  It's up to the Trackable's Owner (TO) whether they want it to be virtually logged.

Pretty-much everything you might want to know about Trackables.    :)

The reference number confuses people.  Geocachers like to log a TB they find, but they must use the Tracking Code for that.  If the reference number is also "on the TB", that adds confusion.  I once found a TB with an attached metal-punched "number" in big letters.  I made a note of that number, which it turns out was the reference number.  Sure, I could have been more diligent, and also checked the TB tag for a number comparison.  But I can think of a reason to not have the reference number when there is also an included Tracking Code:  It makes the TB more confusing.

I do have only a reference number on my car and on my caching shirt, because that reduces the concerns about photos that might be published (it doesn't show a Tracking Code).  But if you want a cache-to-cache TB to be logged, the Tracking Code is suitable.

Including the name of the TB is good, too.  But once a cacher sees the TB page, he sees the TB name.

Thanks. I think the name of the TB on the trackable itself is a good idea. It only came up for me when i had a bag of them to take on a trip, and it was hard to remember which one was which. I also do see the confusion possibility having both the Reference Number and the Tracking Code on the trackable. Best combo seems to be the Tracking Code and the TB Name.

True, but unless the TB description clearly says virtual logs are allowed (or you've contacted the TO for permission), I would assume virtual logs are not allowed.

From the article you linked to:

"Do not “couch log” a trackable without the owner’s permission. Your log is subject to deletion and there may be disciplinary action against your Geocaching account."
