m wgs 84

units statute

north ref. magnetic

variance 004

and took a second readingwhich said

54n57.882 001w 43.821

more or less the same as the first reading

My question is have i got my etrex set up wrong? and would there be a difference in finding the cache between using these set ups?Hope you can understand this jibberish as the more I read it back the more it seems jibberish ( hope the spelling is ok )

AS THATS ANOTHER DOWNFALL OF MINE

Hi Northumbrian.

Spellin.. Whats that!!!!

My answer to Tony was specific to his problem i.e. tying streetmap.co.uk up with his GPS. I use streetmap to check if my co-ords are OK before I post them. Streetmap uses DD MM SS.SS to show a location.

You don't have your etrex setup wrong, if yer did I wouldn't have found yer cache.

The variance and north ref are to do with the compass more than anything, remember we have 3 Norths, Grid north.. verticle lines on map, True North.. that is NORTH NORTH!! and magnetic north, this is the north a compass points too.

So if you set your GPS to Grid north, North will be straight up the map, if it is set to magnetic the variation is about 4 degrees west of Grid North.

I work on a rule of thumb that 0.001 of a minute is 6 ft..

Hope that lot isn't jibberish either and helps you out a wee bit.

If you wish.. I work in Newcastle. We could meet up one lunch time and I can give you a run down on the GPS and also some map reading so you can tie the two together.

Thanks for the offer Moss but I get very busy around Midday but I'm sure our paths are going to cross. A few of us may get together around Xmas and have a session

I normally drink in the ship in Wylam

every week end, as lived there a long time.

Mrs. Northumbrian takes me and the mates down, then comes back to pick us up again

when we get thrown out or run out of money

Thanks again
