Hi there,

Paul here from Glasgow ? 55.80585N 4.35195W,

You can add me to the list, very new to this waiting on my first GPS system being delivered. I got it because I like to go hill walking and was planning the west highland way for a week or two in October. Now that I have stumbled across Geoceching I think I will travel around and see what I can find instead.

Cheers

Paul

This Geocaching thing has got my attention ! This may not be the right place to post this but I want to get in to Geocaching ... only question I have is which unit to get and where? I've seen the eTrex and a GPS12 .. depending on what I need I could stretch the budget ... any suggestions?

And thanks from a future Cacher !!

The only advice I can offer is to try and get your hands on several and see what works best for you. You don't say where you are - if you're close by other cachers, I'm sure they'd be all too glad to meet up - perhaps for a pint or something.......

You don't need most of the features on most of the newer models - but for Geocaching? the following features are most definitely desirable (I'd consider these as the top 5):

1. At least 3 figure accuracy in the minute porton of the display when in degrees & minutes mode - 55°15.01'N 2°10.67'W is a long way from 55°15.02'N 2°10.66'W - and that's the "square" you'd be searching in with 2 digit mode. 4-figure is probably overkill though given the inherent accuracy of the system.

2. Ability to store a good number of waypoints - this may not seem like it's a problem - until you want to go on a cache-frenzy - the norm these days seems to be at least 500 user waypoints.

3. Routes - the more you can store, the easier it is to swap between them while you're in the field without fiddling about in the (inevitable) pouring rain.

4. Connection to PC - most of them do this now, but check out the price of the cable. Why do you want to spend £20 when you can manage the waypoints and routes via the fiddly buttons or joystick on the unit itself? Well the manufacturers update the firmware to cope with changing ephemeris data and to correct bugs - it's the only way to update it. On top of this it makes childsplay to manage your waypoints as you don't have to do it on the unit itself using arrow keys and a lot of patience.

5. Water-resistant/ water-proof ? Up to you - but one thing I can promise you, you will be caught out in the rain with it, and you're bound to drop it in a river/ puddle/ stream/ lake/ miscellaneous body of water - if it's not inherently water-proof seriously consider getting a water-proof carry case for it (like an Aquapac).

I think it's a subtle hint regarding thr Computer Active thingy that our Mentor has been involved in icon_wink.gif

PS. Spoke to GPS Warehouse today to see if they would stump up a cheap and cheerfull GPS for a one off cache at a national meet up that I'm toying with the idea of organising... only to find Moss had already got there with his CA cache grrrrrr icon_wink.gif

Welcome to the fold my friend.

Simplest was it the more the better.. ie 20 routes with 50 waypoints is beter than 20 routes with 30.

I have a Vista and it is good, and used to use a 12.. which is a good unit but doesn't have all the bells an whistles but is bulky compared to etrex range.

Gotta decide how much you can afford and then make the decision. if you are at bottem end of the marked.. go for a 12 from GPS Warehouse (www.gpsw.co.uk) get a referbished 12 for about 89 quid.

Thanks for the Welcome !

Well I think my budget now is between the GPS12 and the eTrex. Looked back on the Garmin site after checking out the price on GPSW thinking WHOA that eTrex Vista is damned expensive compared to the US site and found they had updated it with the correct pricing i.e. $300.00 or there abouts. Earlier the price was $158.00 - boy do I wish I'd ordered one when I saw that price !! :-( Hehe So out of those 2 I guess it's the GPS12 then for the extras over the eTrex?!

The Magellan 315 (About £115 from www.gpsw.co.uk has storage for 20 routes of 30 waypoints each and is a smaller unit than the Garmin GPS12 (at least I think it is - I could be wrong - Moss has seen both together) with better battery life (only uses 2 AA's rather than the 4 in a GPS12, and gives longer life on each set too)

Which is best?

I know ... I know ... I'm being a newbie !!

Appreciation and gratitude aplenty for your help !

The best one is the one that does what you want at a price that you're willing to pay.

There is no right answer because all of them will have some features you don't want/need, and you need to pick out the ones you do need/want and narrow it down that way - if you get stuck between 2 then it comes down to a personal choice.

Well my lady has coerced and connived and convinced me to let her gift me something towards a GPS ... reluctantly I have given in to her requests and accepted her offer ...

Thank you for your advice JasonW .. really appreciated but as I've been working my way through all of this I've got a hankering for the Garmin range ... convince me otherwise by Thursday and I may just change my mind otherwise it is now only a question of whether or not I need the MetroGuide to go with the eTrex Legend or whether I skip that and go for the eTrex Vista without the MetroGuide ...

Any suggestions Anyone ??

Well just for my 2 pence worth...

I got a Garmin E-Map... very nice great for navigation with the maps. The only drawback is the lack of waterproofing...

So on my last trip to the states I bought a etrex legend (200 dollars).. which has all the functionality of the e-map but is waterproof and much more resistant to knocks. I load my e-map maps up into the legend and it is great for caching.

ps: If you are in Frimley... I am near Camberley.
