M'N'M
Hi All, Just found my first cache this week and hope to do some more hunting with soon. Looking through the logs and judging by the contents of the cache I would guess that most hunters are doing this with children as an outdoor activity to get them away from the TV. How about placing a self-inking picture or specially made (if you wish) stamp in your cache so that you can carry a personal logbook around with you and stamp a new entry each time a cache is found. I know this sounds a bit like orienteering but I just thought that this would give folks something to take away even if they didn't fancy any of the stuff in the cache. It could also be used alone to create a simple form of cache in urban areas (where you wouldn't want to hide an ammo box) like behind road signs or BT cabinets, or as a check during more 'competitive' events. Sorry if this has been suggested before - I said I was new to this - but it just struck me as I walked awayfrom my first cache. Regards, M'N'M Quote Link to comment
+Rocky Balboa
Cant remember seeing that suggested before and it sounds like a great idea. I would love to have a cache book i could take a look at whenever i wanted. I suppose the 'my page' on geocaching.com logs all your finds and keeps records but having something physical too would be a nice touch. Its just a hunt for a lunch box, why be so serious!?! Team Tate
This has been done on a smaller scale. Team Nia have a series of caches with The Bob the Builder theme & in each cache is a stamp which you can add to a card in order to collect the whole set around the country. But sounds like a good idea for other caches. Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead... Quote Link to comment
+washboy
This is a great idea. I'd love to have a "washboy" stamp to carry with me to stamp logbooks. I'm just not artistic enough to make the design. Perhaps SimonG could extend his alternative website to cater for icons and cartoon logos as well as greetings cards. Wacha think, SimonG? ===== There's no such thing as a free lunchbox! Quote Link to comment
+Naefearjustbeer
Sounds like a excellent idea. I take a note book with me when I go hunting, To take notes for when I get back home to my pc so that I can fill in any details that I might forget when I post my log. It would be cool to have a stamp in my book from each cache. Or on the flipside of that idea you could carry your own unique stamp round with you to mark the logbook in each cache. Now where can you get these things there must be somewhere you can design your own stamp online. Hi Ho Hi Ho its of to google I go!!!!! or is this something already covered by letterboxing? Hear about the 2 blondes that walked into a bar? You would of thought at least one of them would of seen it!! Quote Link to comment
+paul.blitz
quote:Just found my first cache this week and hope to do some more hunting with soon. Welcome to the sport, M'N'M! quote:How about placing a self-inking picture or specially made (if you wish) stamp in your cache so that you can carry a personal logbook around with you and stamp a new entry each time a cache is found. What you describe is what 'letterboxers' do: they hide a box, which contains (a) a cache stamp; ( a log book. Each letter boxer also has a stamp with pad & a log book: when they find a box, they stamp the box's pad with their stamp, and stamp their pad with the box's stamp. http://www.letterboxing.org describes what they do in the US, and a search for 'letterboxing' will include UK activities. +Travers
Welcome and Congrats on your first find. As mentioned in the previous messages, the idea is similar to letterboxing. There are definitely a few people in this area who either have stamps or sticky labels that they use in the log books. For the not-so-artistic, they could easily reproduce the labels on their PC, in fact I've been thinking of making some...it's just finding an appropriate image. Travers is not a name, it's a dressage movement. Just a note on your comment about most hunters doing this with kids...I think you'd be surprised! Quote Link to comment

+stu_and_sarah
We got our stamp for letterboxing from 'Make Your Mark' in York. http://www.manik.u-net.com/ Just provide a drawing, or MS Word document. You can see it on the Laughter Tor logbook, or any of the logs we've visited! http://tinyurl.com/2rkp We always carry our stamp and ink pad, the problem with leaving stuff in the cache is that it could freeze, or get stolen. Hopefully, people are clever enough not to remove the rubber stamp. Quote Link to comment

Moss Trooper
I was the first in UK to start using a stamp.. Mine is a self inking job and I usually stamp the log books. http://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/ian.paterson/trooper.jpg I also use stickers which I either have in the car or me pocket just incase I do an unplanned cache.. Moss de Boss... Sorta Quote Link to comment

Not fool proof, but may discourage someone from thinking it is a swap item. --... ...-- Morseman Quote Link to comment
+stu_and_sarah
I guess we don't use self-inking because of our letterboxing. You need a pad anyway for that, so we went for the cheaper stamp. As for morseman's suggestion: sounds like a good one. Bit of epoxy should sort it out! Quote Link to comment
+Naefearjustbeer
What sort of price do these custom stamps cost? Hear about the 2 blondes that walked into a bar? You would of thought at least one of them would of seen it!! Quote Link to comment
+page28
I had a go at making my own stamp using a rubber. I found the instructions on a letterboxing site. I did a reasonable job of doing my Owl Avatar but couldn't get the text right. So I have ordered one from Make Your Mark in York. £17.95 for a self inking one. I forget the size, but when I pick it up I will get the prices. Quote Link to comment
MCL
quote:Originally posted by Morseman: Not fool proof, but may discourage someone from thinking it is a swap item. ..nah. Someone will probably swap the lid out as well... No trees were harmed during the production of this posting, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.... Quote Link to comment
+stu_and_sarah
Our stamp (also from Make Your Mark) was non-inking. It was 14.95 inc. postage for a 30x20mm. Service is quick, and the carving is accurate. The ink pad caused fun - Staples did one which said it had a snap-shut lid, but it didn't stay shut, so took it back. There was actually no mechanism at all which could have held it shut. WHSmiths do one which _does_ stay shut! The pad box also makes a nice hard surface for stamping on. Quote Link to comment
+page28
I was going to put a copy of the sizes to prices page on the web but I find that I am locked out of my.genie.co.uk/grumpey/ website. I Have just tried to apply for a geocacheuk homepage but no password came back. After doing a bit of digging on how they make the rubber stamps, it's not that hard. They make a negative of your design to make a mask. Make a mold and pour in a photopoymer resin. Then they expose a photopolymer resin to UV which hardens then wash away the unexposed resin to leave the stamp.... Quote Link to comment
phredd
While I like the idea of carrying my own stamp with me, the thought of putting one in every cache would scare me. My pocket money does not allow it, niether does my pay slip at the end of month. Quote Link to comment
No More
I guess Letterboxing should be left to Leeterboxes Quote Link to comment

+page28
If you print it out as is (don't fit to page) this should give you an idea http://www.geocacheuk.com/homepages//page28/file0001.jpg I Don't intend leaving one in each cache I put out, mine just goes with me to stamp the log book...
