+Max and 99 Posted January 4, 2024 Posted January 4, 2024 Geocaching Charted 2023 Earlier this year, we charted a course towards success for our 2023 geocaching goals. Now, we’ve finally reached our destination and made many great geocaching memories along the way! Let’s take a look back at your geocaching stats for the full year. Whether you were all about the numbers or just here to make memories, this email will show you where you’ve been and maybe just help you plan where you want to go in 2024. Without further ado, let’s get charted… ________ I got my stats in the geocaching charted email today and it doesn't look correct to me. I did not hide 11 geocaches this year. Has anybody else found their stats to be off? Quote

+terratin Posted January 4, 2024 Posted January 4, 2024 Biggest surprise for me: Apparently I found caches in 14 countries last year. And despite not caching a lot I still managed to find 10 cache types. And I only awarded 10 favourite points. 1 Quote

I even gave one FP. Treatments well into February, since I've been good, I'm looking at cutting a deal with the doc for walks longer than around the tiny park near me. 2 Quote
+barefootjeff Posted January 4, 2024 Posted January 4, 2024 I gave out 43 FPs across 219 finds, thanks to the 20 bonus FPs earlier in the year, but I'm now back in deficit so I need to be a bit more selective with my favouriting. It's difficult, though, with few new caches being published now but most of those being good quality and great experiences. Gone are the days of a steady stream of 1.5/1.5 trads to bulk up my find count with non-favourites. The other slightly surprising stat was 9 hides during the year, as my annual average had previously been about 5. At the start of the year I hadn't really planned on hiding any new caches, other than one I'd been trying to get approval for from national parks (and I'm still waiting on that). Quote

+Max and 99 Posted January 11, 2024 Author Posted January 11, 2024 I tried to take the survey and was told I wasn't allowed to it; can only be taken by users in the organization? 4 Quote

+AutoMagicGeo Posted January 11, 2024 Posted January 11, 2024 Update on the situation: approximately one and a half hours after the original mail, I got another one with the title „Link fixed: Geocaching Charted survey“ and they changed the text to „Did you try to take the survey and were not able to? We updated the survey link and are looking forward to hearing from you!“. It‘s the same link, so the one from the original mail works now too. Best regards AutoMagicGeo 1 Quote
+MNTA Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 My improvement suggestion was to add links to the found logs and listings. Seems like a lot of this should be accessible from the web page with custom filters. Hey more Premium features or add an elite level. 2 1 Quote
+CheekyBrit Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 There are so many directions they could go with this, I'm excited to see what pops up in 2024. Something like this: https://project-gc.com/Challenges/47926 would be crazy, but i'm sure they'll have new stats that weren't in last year. I'm guessing more on the badge gen progress - eg: you went from 1 multi fizzy loop to 2 multi fizzy loops.... Quote

We haven't been nearly as active this year as we have been in the past, but grandkids, volunteer stuff, life....we still enjoy finding and placing caches but other things occupy our time too. Fun to see a summary of my activity for the first 6 months of 2024! Quote

Ok hate to ask a silly question but... the person I cache with got this "charted" thing. His finds etc are hidden from non-friends as are mine. But I never got this charted thing last year, and I didn't get it last week either. Apparently loads of people did, including lots of you! I do get the HQ newsletter and I checked all my email settings and nothing but foreign language emails is turned off. (edit: I was incorrect!) Any clues out there about why I was left out? Edit to add: someone upthread also gets HQ newsletters but didn't get this stats thing. No one answered them, so I am hopeful someone can help me out! Edit again... apparently I was supposed to have promotional emails checked. didn't notice. So there you go in case others also wondered. Funny I don't want junk mail selling me geocoins and stuff, but stats would be better than the newsletter! I wish they were more clear on that check box. If anyone is willing to say what stats they got in that email, I'd love to know... Edited July 16, 2024 by CCFwasG 1 Quote

I'm not even sure what else is categorised as "promotional" apart from the Charted emails. 5 hours ago, CCFwasG said: If anyone is willing to say what stats they got in that email, I'd love to know... Nothing spectacula, but then I'm not a stats-chaser. Curious that they're predicting I'll find 11 caches on the 2nd of December, oh wait, it seems they can't comply with our date format preferences in these either. Those 11 finds on the 12th of February were part of a series of kayaking caches along Cockle Creek at Lake Macquarie (south-west of Newcastle) and were a fun day out on the water. 1 1 Quote

The big suprise for me was this: That had me scratching my head, as I only found two caches on the 2nd of December, one down on Sydney harbour and the other a newly published one close to home that I dashed out to before dinner. Oh, but wait, I guess the developers who created this just assumed that everyone lives in the USA and uses their muddled-up date format, and sure enough I did find 11 caches on the 12th of February. In generating this, they were looking at a whole lot of other stuff specific to my account, so why not my date preference setting too? 2 1 Quote
+barefootjeff Posted January 9 Posted January 9 The other thing that stood out for me was this one: The cache in question is a Virtual Rewards 2.0 located at a very popular tourist spot in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. It was okay as virtuals go but nothing particularly exciting, just finding a word on a sign, counting the seats and the slats making up each one, and taking a selfie in front of the tourist attraction (the Three Sisters). Its 107 FPs come from 653 finds, so 19%, and for me, having grown up in Sydney and visited the Three Sisters numerous times, nowhere near memorable enough to part with a scarce FP of my own. It was just one of a small handful of easy caches I did that day prior to attending a nearby event. Quote
+fuzziebear3 Posted January 9 Posted January 9 It would have been nice if they made the GCs hot linkable or mentioned so I didnt have to go figure out what they represented. My total number were down: 655 caches, and 78 days. But I did award 50 favorite points, so not too stingy, especially since that 655 had more adventure labs than anything else, which wouldnt even be eligible for FPs. Quote
+Goldenwattle Posted January 9 Posted January 9 728 finds, found on 115 days. Most of those would have been when I was travelling, as that's when I mostly cache. GC1637 (2001) Oldest cache found. The Rock, NSW, Australia. I found 10 types of caches. Found caches in 9 countries. GC1HA96 Cache found with most favourite (1027) points. Singapore Airport. I awarded 75 favourite points. Quote
+CAVinoGal Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Got my stats for the year 2024 - I too was surprised at how few days I had finds. I knew we'd "slacked" off due to other things taking priority, but I thought I'd done better. 218 finds with 52 caching days 21 favorite points awarded 9 cache types (thanks to GeoWoodstock XX!) Best day was also at GeoWoodstock XX, May 25 with 27 finds Looks like one of my 2025 goals will be to do better, cache more days! Quote
+barefootjeff Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I see this is the only stat related to me as a CO: Eight new caches is a bit above my usual average for a year but five of those were my Entrancing Isles series at The Entrance. It would have been nice to see some other CO-related stats, such as the total number of finds and FPs on my hides for the year. 3 Quote
+thebruce0 Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Yep, 174 finds this year. Or, smilies. My biggest irk with the stats is: 16 - This is the number of geocaches you hid this year. Thank you for contributing to your geocaching community! Well no, I hosted 12 events, and the latest geocache I hid was in December 2023. ... My main caching in 2024 was for monthly FTFs, and events. With 174 smilies, it says I attended 49 events. But I count 53 Attended logs in 2024, including 5 CITOs and 3 Megas. Am I reading the wrong stats, or missing something in my own? Quote

+thebruce0 Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Oh right, I did post one, with 5 locations. It's hidden now, not archived, but I'm not sure how that gets from 12 "geocaches hidden" to 16. And I did log 24 AL Locations over the year,. according to labs.geocaching.com/logs. Anyway the point is, the numbers don't immediately add up or make sense by their labelling. They were certainly attained somehow by data scripting, but their definition/explanation doesn't seem descriptively consistent. I'd expect to look at my stats and easily see what makes up the "16 geocaches hidden", not wonder why it says that without 1 actual geocache hidden in 2024... =/ Quote

Published before January (so 2023); that's still 12 events published in 2024. ...Oh wait, I didn't do a March event. Okay that does add up then - not because of the publish date but because I missed doing a March event. 11 events, +5 AL locations. Okay well that number works now... still doesn't address "16 geocaches hidden" when 11 are events and 5 are AL stops, none of them "geocaches" I still stand by that prior point. Quote

I agree that, if possible, the stats should differentiate between events hosted and caches hidden. You hosted XX events and hid XX geocaches for others to find. I think hosting events contributes more to "community" - at least our local events. It puts us on a first name basis, faces to names, swapping phone numbers for PAF, and we enjoy each other's company! And I learn much from other, more experienced geocachers at these events. And CITOs benefit the larger community by cleaning up local parks and trails. So, yeah, events should be separate from "hides". Quote
