Ben Pid Posted June 25, 2002 Posted June 25, 2002 Ok I have been doing alot of caches recently in these summer months which have been great caches and thurilly enjoyable. However, I am sick to death of being stung left right and centre by Stinging nettles. lol. I just want to know peoples opinions on the whole idea of planting caches within clusters of often Head High stinging nettles. Making the cache hunt more of a mission than a hunt. Yesterday this occured, not mentioning the cache name but the GPS led us right into the middle of a Stinging Nettle ocean, I wasn't wearing shorts thankfully, So to look for the cache I waded in with a tree branch and just like Robin of Loxely I swang at them as Dan behind me searched for the cache. I know Finger doesn't approve of Caches in Stinging nettles, I do not either and neither does Dan, now what does everyone think? should caches be here, and if they are planted in the winter months when the weeds aren't evident should the planter not think about this concept? All the best Pid xxx Watch out its a Golfcourse... (Team Dan + Pid) Quote
+jeremyp Posted June 25, 2002 Posted June 25, 2002 Nah. It's all part of the fun Coping with stinging nettles is minor compared to some countries where you might encounter nasty poisonous things like snakes. OTOH I recommend you and Dan check out Watermeads Wetlands 1 and take a strimmer with you. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching Quote

Rangers of Ithilien Posted June 25, 2002 Posted June 25, 2002 We have only done a couple of caches but both were within nettle patches. Like you, we had to wade through a large sea of nettles to get to the first one. I even got stung through trousers they were that nasty!! It didnt help that I slipped over on the muddy ground either Its difficult to tell where there will be nettles when you place a cache in winter. Perhaps those cache owners who notice nettle reports in the logs for their cache should move them a little to make it safer then update the page? Some people like to hunt for caches with children and if there are nettles everywhere it can spoil a day out. Tiffany (Just one of the Rangers!) Quote

Slytherin Posted June 25, 2002 Posted June 25, 2002 To be fair, Pid. I think that a lot of the caches were planted before the nettles arrived. Case in point is Hornet's hide No4. If you look at your picture taken there a couple of months ago there is hardly a trace of nettles. We went on Saturday and they are over five feet high. Lucky for us the Hornet took his strimmer down there later (well a big lump of wood actually) and beat a path through the nettles for us. I think I'll invest in a machete before the next growing season. Alex. Quote
Ben Pid Posted June 25, 2002 Author Posted June 25, 2002 Hmm yes HH4 that'll the one by the river! LOL! Your right when we went there there were no nettles, amazing how quick the things grow really. Pid Watch out its a Golfcourse... (Team Dan + Pid) Quote
+Lassitude Posted June 25, 2002 Posted June 25, 2002 Stinging nettles are a good deterrent to prevent unwanted people finding a cache. I did caches in Europe that suffered them too. If I had my way caches under dense tree cover would be banned But there we go stingers are part of it. Just think how I felt in Denmark a week ago gently wading though stingers in shorts trying to find 'The Nokia Cache'. Got stung so bad I could still feel the stingers a day later. Whats more I lost my GPS case and failed to find it. Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. The Clangers Posted June 25, 2002 Posted June 25, 2002 I wish we only had nettles to contend with! In Scotland a lot of the caches are placed half way up mountains! After the family spending 2 hours climbing up a mountain in Glencoe with torrential rain and thick mist and then not findind it i am having extreme difficulty in convincing them to look for any more. The Clangers..Or maybe soon The Lone Clanger. Quote
+Richard & Beth Posted June 26, 2002 Posted June 26, 2002 I think maybe the weather this year has something to do with it, one of my caches was fairly straightforward when it was set earlier this year, but the nettles have gone from nothing, to several feet high in the past few months so the cache is nigh on impossible without getting stung now! It certainly wasn't a deliberate attempt to get people stung when I set it up. Richard Quote
+McDeHack Posted June 26, 2002 Posted June 26, 2002 Nettles Hah! Wot about the Mossies? I shall be going caching this weekend and have just purchased a gallon of Nat repelant. If anyone has ever encountered the Mossies from the Epping forest area they will know what real Mossies are. They leave you scared for life. I Hope the Hertfordshire Mossies are not so violent Quote
philgn Posted June 27, 2002 Posted June 27, 2002 Whats all this old tosh about a few nettles, Have we become a nation off wimps. Better a few nettles than up to your neck in muck and bullets. I regularlyish check my caches, And the nettles dont put me off, has no-one heard of dock leaves. Phil Don't take a pound and leave a shilling Quote
Slytherin Posted June 28, 2002 Posted June 28, 2002 I don't think it's a matter of going soft. Lots of caches were planted in March/April when there were no nettles around and now they are surrounded by the blinking things. Remember, there are those of us who take children caching with us and it can be a bit of a bind to set out on a cache that is rated 1/1 - an easy stroll - only to find it's in a patch of nettles six feet high. I suppose it is a good lesson for us all that, it is wise to check out our own cache locations from time to time and perhaps update the cache description and rating if applicable. I had Harry Seacombe in the back of my cab once Quote

I don't know why you're complaining about taking children to stinging nettle infested caches. You can send them in to find the cache, and if they can't, you can get them to lie down on the nettles while you walk across them to look for the cache yourself.
