What things (apart from the GPS) do you take with you when geocaching?

Once I tested to bring my palmpilot with information about the caches I'm trying to find otherwise I bring paper copies of cache-information from geocaching.com. I usually bring my small digital camera (GSmart Mini 2).

To me, it depends upon if it's a short, just passing by, cache hunt, or if I go out looking for cahces the entire day.

  • I usually bring:
  • GPS
  • Batteries
  • Pen (sometimes it doesn't work in the cache)
  • Phone
  • Often my Palm V, with downloaded descriptions
  • A digital camera, if I remember it
  • The geosuit, of course icon_biggrin.gif
In some instances, additional things may be required, like:
  • Flashlight
  • Rubber boots
  • Food and drink
  • Rope
  • Wetsuit (mostly to place them...)
  • Something to trade, although I don't care too much about that

It seams from teh above posts that some needs a backpack icon_biggrin.gif

And cache-information?? nooo... thats not real caching then

  • GPS
  • spare batteries
  • folder with cache printouts
  • flashlight
  • small knife
  • calculator
  • pen and pencils
  • trinkets and treasures for trading (if I feel like it)
  • water, occasionally something to eat too
  • occasionally a camera

At this moment my pack contains also:

  • a regular size cache waiting for time to be placed
  • a micro size cache waiting for time to be placed

Things I should have (or would at least be neat to have):

  • PDA
  • rubber boots (no, I don't own those at the moment icon_razz.gif)
  • digicam

The Fisher space pen is a typical American brute-force engineering example, to solve a problem in the most expensive way.

The problem: When there is no gravity, like in a space station, you can't use an ordinary ball-point pen. The ink can fall downwards to the ball, since there is no "down". The solution: A pressurized ink chamber, to force the ink out.

The Russians had the same problem, of course, but they didn't have the fund to invent a ball point pen that worked in outer space. Their solution: A pencil. Go figure.

... but speaking as a person who writes in the outdoors: A pencil written note in a damp pocket isn't as legible as a pen written one after a few hours.

Space pens rule!

icon_razz.gifUsually when geocaching I bring:

- GPS Garmin eTrex Vista with local map,

- Old fashioned, low cost, lead pencil with all weather and deep space capabilities,

- Hardcopy of pages with cache info,

- Hardcopy of local map in typically 1:25000,

- Digital camera,

- Items to leave in the cache.

- Sensible clothing depending on the cache surroundings and weather conditions.

In my car I use a Garmin StreetPilot III with local map to get me quickly from my Home to a good parking spot near the cache - and back again. icon_rolleyes.gif

Sometimes I lie awake at night, and I ask, "Where have I gone wrong?" Then a voice says to me, "This is going to take more than one night."
