The "How to format" help on the old loggin page still shows the old smilies.

So here for a historical documentation:

Some of the new ones are unreadable without magnification (sleepy, shy, wink, blush...)

A step backwards.

PS, in subtle ways, you're changing the meaning of what we've written.  Please don't do that.  (eg, I used "dead"(-tired), but now it reads as spooky, Halloween.)

I politely request all existing logs be grandfathered to their original meaning.

I really liked the "dead" smiley [xx(] and it has been replaced by a skull.

I join the club B).

When I noticed the change, I tried out my (so far) "favorite" smileys, and  in general the differences were not that big - except for the "dead" one. The context, in which I used it so far was always "tired", "beaten", "exhausted", even "bored to death". The green face with crossed-out eyes and tongue sticking out worked well for all that, but the skull just doesn't.

I just saw that in a yesterday's log the three different emojis I put into my text don't show up. I have always used the codes shown here in chapter "Markdown Smileys". The codes [:)] and [:o)] don't show up at all and [8D] looks different than usual. I have attached a screenshot.

Does anybody know what happend? Do the codes not work anymore? I tried to submit the log entry again via website, but it made no difference.

I also noticed that behavior, the markdown codes like [:)] will now be rendered as the unicode emoji, depending on your operating system. I'm not sure what's the cause of that but since there's no thread in the "Release Notes" forum here, I assume Groundspeak made some changes "under the hood". Some markdown codes are now rendered into a unicode emojis that doesn't resemble the same emotion in my opinion. I used the [xx(] markdown code to express disillusionment, disgust or exhaustion - now it renders to a skull! The "black eye" markdown code [B)] that I used to express situations that were uncomfortable but not bad or like a facepalm now renders to an emoji with a head bandage. My existing logs may now be misinterpreted by those who read them now with the unicode emojis. It would've been better to grandfather the markdown emojis but keep them in old logs to preserve the original statement and meaning and not just convert them into different-looking and different-feeling unicode emojis. Just my two cents.

My log with the "good old" markdown emojis:

Same log with the new unicode rendered emojis:

As much as I agree with the sentiment, I don't expect this to happen. Once upon a time, logs supported BBCode. A lot of old logs still include BBCode. When Groundspeak first implemented Markdown, all those logs with BBCode became gibberish.

Exactly. Blush, Black Eye, Frown, Shy, Dead, Sleepy, Approve and Disapprove look totally different now. And they express different emotions than before. Was that really necessary?

I remember when I ran a db search in gsak to find all my logs with [s] and [/s] and "This log has been edited by ..." and cleaned my logs manually afterwards - those where the days! Why are they doing the same mistake again?

I really don't like this change. Some of the new smileys have another meaning than the old ones, and logs become distorted!

Please keep the old smileys and leave the decision to use other emojis to the users!

Is Groundspeak even aware of this issue? Maybe we should "report a bug" to draw their attention to this..?

I always thought that GS would follow this subforum "website".

@Frau Potter

Could we have some feedback on this please?

Confirming that an issue has been reported by virtue of this thread being started in the Website forum, which is the correct place for "Discussions about features, bugs, and ways to improve Geocaching.com."  Not every thread is acknowledged by HQ, but the forum is monitored actively.

I can't remember when I last thought about one of Groundspeaks "improvements" as a step forward ... :(

That's exactly how it is!

In German we have a term for this: "etwas verschlimmbessern" (make things worse, to disimprove).

Bumping this thread, noticed this as I was looking through some of my old logs. I feel like the Unicode emojis change the meaning in some contexts, plus I was a big fan of some of the old custom images expressions, as they felt iconic for geocaching - now it's just plain regular emojis like everywhere else.

Another example of Groundspeak changing the meaning of existing logs by changing the BBCode/Markdown/Emoji/whatever rendering of those logs...
