Guest ariwa Posted January 7, 2002 Posted January 7, 2002 Hi there, Has anyone seen this yet? http://forums.Groundspeak.com/ubb/Forum13/HTML/000987.html It's a description and link to this, http://www.geocities.com/kingcraft_99/ , this guy has modified the standard etrex 2.11 firmware and replaced the Flag icon with a treasure chest (and put some extra stuff on the startup screen apparently). Has anyone with the basic etrex (Team HG? tgsnoopy?) done this upgrade yet or is planning to? Steve Quote
Guest BigNick Posted January 7, 2002 Posted January 7, 2002 I am waiting on my Pfranc plugs, and I am planning on editing the 2.11 firmware and replacing the system information with my contact details. See http://etrex.webz.cz/hack.html for more info (but I am just going to use hiew (hex editor)) - To me a flag is as good treasure chest, so that does not interest me, but having my details in the unit does (if only the splash screen could be edited easily - although I think that this is probably hard coded, rather than in firmware) Nick. It works fine. I soon lost interest in it though and have since changed back to the standard firmware. I prefer the dots on my GPSr screen. ------------------ It's out there...let's go get it! Quote
Guest tgsnoopy Posted January 7, 2002 Posted January 7, 2002 I've got to agree with embi, I've done it, numerous times now! No problems with the software. It's still loaded into my GPS and I'm having no problems with the software, just the pathetic reception my eTrex seems to have always suffered. Haven't found the time to play with the firmware re installing my contact details yet, but hopefully I will soon (need to get a decent hex editor first). Finally sorted out the engine in my car after it's overheating while dashing last month, last thing I thought it would be, not heat related damage, just coincidence That darn Murphy! Quote

Check out MeMap Alot easier then using a hex editor to add your contact info. Written for the Emap, but works on the Etrex and 76 lines as well. Quote

Guest peejay Posted January 9, 2002 Posted January 9, 2002 Hey tg, I wonder if those cutesy little cellphone antenna booster thingies would help the etrex reception? They seem to be some sort of printed curcuit on a piece of plastic film, any experience of them with cellphones? Quote
Guest tgsnoopy Posted January 11, 2002 Posted January 11, 2002 Best type to buy is one that can accept and external antenna and is capable of powering active antennas by supplying +5V up the connector. I've decided to keep my eTrex, it will be useful for ensuring GPS coverage when setting up caches. Quote
