Winter must slow us down!

Interesting to note that there are a few relatively new caches around here that haven't been pounced on yet. Previously I would rush off to get them first if I could, but MinuteWar has curtailed a lot of my Geocaching time. I wonder what's happened to others! Could it just be winter? I hope they haven't fallen off. One of the locals up here e-mailed me a bit over a month ago keen to organise a Geocachers barbeque, but I heard nothing further despite being keen on the idea. As we are going into my first winter of geocaching, is this normal? It is pleasing to see we passed 150 active geocaches this weekend. Interestingly, my attempts in the past to get media coverage have failed due to DOC not being aware of us, the local paper etc is reluctant to publish stories which might impact on our enviroment and are not officially recognised. I suppose it's a good thing they check it out before publishing. Perhaps we should consider addressing this again? Food for thought everyone, any comments?

I must admit that MinuteWar has been eating alot of my time (go team W!) but I did take a couple of days off over easter and baged 10 caches down south (cheers Donovan and Gavin) - made a change to go somewhere and find a physical something, rather than virtual something icon_wink.gif The loss of daylight savings has prevented finding and placing caches after work, so that may account for some of the drop off...

Cheers

Since the pay to cache days started we have lost some of the interest we had for Geocaching. We have not found or hidden a cache since then but have told others about the sport. We are not happy about getting others hooked like us if it means at some stage they feel they have to pay to cache. We will not pay to cache but feel others that have paid will not take to us still caching in on them. icon_confused.gif

Well this is a difficult subject. I would like you to think of the Charter Membership as Jeremy likes to call it as a donation or club subscription, It is not compulsory. You can still go geocaching, a number of players have already stated they will not place any members only caches, that is because like yourselves they think Geocaching should be free. In fact I personally beleive that a fee of some kind is neccessary for the continuation of the Geocaching website, the costs involved in running it must be huge. If a geocacher doesn't want people who aren't members to go finding his geocache, then he has the ability to make it a members only cache, I doubt anyone has done that, I would be surprised to say the least if anyone in New Zealand would. Please continue Geocaching, Our sport will miss you otherwise! (Must actually meet you guys too). Most people who have paid hide the fact by changing the name associated with their login to Geocacher instead of Charter Member because they don't want to cause the them and us situation, They think of it as a donation to cover the costs only. Hopefully others will back me up on this cause I'd hate to loose some good geocachers such as yourselves unneccessarily. icon_smile.gif

I agree with you tgsnoopy, and I am sure that if geocaching.com was ever made pay-for-play that we have enough tech savy players in NZ to setup geocaching.co.nz (Gavin/Rediguana has already registered the domain) for just us NZ players. (But domain registrations and bandwidth do cost money, so someone will have to shell out...)

It is a tricky subject and there is no right answer. I don't agree with the commercialisation of geocaching.com - I believe it should be run as any other sports club. Cover the overheads, and pay people who do the work. But most importantly, there should be open accounting, the books have to be open for memebers. I have no hesitation in saying that I haven't paid yet primarily because of the lack of openness. I fully support Jeremy (and others) to get paid for his time, and not to be out of pocket for the running of geocaching.com. But it must be open for members to view the accounts.

But I don't think giving up on geocaching is the answer. Heck, going out and finding a box with radio signals is just too much dadgum fun, and is a great talking point. I'm going to keep doing it, and you guys should too. You may find, that like me, you start to temper you geocaching because of other activities (namely minutewar, but also geodashing). Oh yeah, and life icon_wink.gif

Do keep playing, do stay involved. You don't have to pay if you don't want to. And if worst comes to worst, there are other options available.

Cheers Gav aka rediguana

I'm very pleased to see the Klaymen place a new cache on Mount Maunganui (Mauao), I was concerned we had lost their participation.

Incidently, I would personally be foolish to place a cache there, after in 1999 I installed a low power FM radio station translator for Blowhole FM into the Surf Clubs repeater enclosure. I thought nothing of it, they asked me to do it whilst performing the usual maintenance (which I did on a volunteer basis). Turns out, the power is paid for by Airways corporation for running the lights on the pole it's all mounted on, they didn't consent, No licence had been obtained and one was neccessary, and a bylaw had been created preventing any new equipment being installed.

I turned off the equipment a week after it was commissioned and removed it. I learnt a valuable lesson, and was darn lucky not to have been prosecuted, if I hadn't previously worked with the technician who actually held the licence for the output frequency (that was illegally used), I could have been liable for a fine for up to $250,000.00 Ouch!

Subsequently I am well aware of the bylaw, and a certain council official would love to rub my nose in it if he got the chance (by me putting a cache there), he'd fine me, whereas a normal member of the public would most likely be ignored or warned at worst.

Now if I can just find the time to go look for Klaymens new cache. icon_smile.gif

Hey THG - Make that 6 finds.. or is it 7? I'm losing count.

My eTrex was being a ***** yesterday. I was looking for a cache and it kept swaying really bad. I assumed to begin with that it might have something to do with daylight savings - but AFAIK GPSr's have no concept of local time..? I would have thought they'd go with GMT or something and the output can be set as an offset for local time?

Besides.. I haven't adjusted the time in it for ages.. which I should probably do come to think of it :-)

Paying for Geocaching - get real. I can't see the costs of hosting geocaching.com being THAT high. I dunno what his traffic stats are, nor do I know how much he's paying for data (doesn't Jeremy run it from his employer's site?) but I can't see why he can't get by with donations or something.

If it were to go any more commercial than it is now I'd be happy to donate my time to help get www.geocaching.co.nz running (along with extra functionality such as regional drill downs and stuff that Geocaching.com just doesn't have). I'm not a web design guru by any means but I know PHP and MySQL and Apache reasonably well! icon_smile.gif

As far as I know Jeremy has resigned from the position he held when he started Geocaching.com and is now doing the geocaching website full time. He said very little when he changed to the charter membership system, but I'm fairly certain he is now only doing geocaching support full time. He had tried to run geocaching.com on a donation basis but it wasn't working.

For some reason when I was looking breifly a few minutes ago I was unable to find a lot of the postings about the changes to a charter membership system, it's almost like they were deleted! I hope not!

The servers hosting the geocaching site must be fairly large, with a rather quick connection into the web, after all, there are now a huge number of members. I imagine his costs for the web hosting alone would be more than an average mans salary these days.

I don't think it's going to be neccessary for anyone to start up our own site just yet (and hopefully it never will), but it is reassuring to know that we have the domain name secured and people prepared to help. I'm fairly confident between Gav, Nick & Steve that if worse comes to worse our sport can continue. Thanks guys icon_biggrin.gif

Even the forum software that we are using now is not cheap - have a look.

God only knows how much traffic people looking at GC.com use, being as there are over 38000 cache pages! By the time you include all the photos there must be multi-gigabytes worth of information (in another thread Jeremy was talking about needing a US$10K rack mount server for an upgrade!) not something I would like to run as a hobby icon_wink.gif

Thanks Nick, once again I used to much haste in one of my "quick looks" and don't find what I'm looking for. Mind you, I could just be lazy relying on someone like you to do the hard work for me icon_wink.gif.

I feel validated now that my comments were justified, I'm sure glad I'm not paying for that kind of hardware, let alone the other costs involved, all so we can enjoy our hobby. I personally feel the US$30.00 per annum is a very reasonable fee.

In any case, at this point in time you can enjoy this sport without paying any fee's and it appears this will remain the case for the immediate future at least. However, people do have the option when placing caches to restrict access to members only. I'm not aware of any such caches in NZ yet, but you just don't know what the future will bring. I personally won't place any member only caches, and I suspect most NZ Geocachers will feel the same way, but I might change my opinion if I get a few plundered (I have one to check on at this stage). For those of you who have paid your Charter Membership subscription, I thank you for your contribution towards our sport, you are helping make this sport accessable for everyone, and that is why I'm more than happy to pay it myself icon_smile.gif

Hmm, I've just printed out Island rock in the last couple of days and been considering doing that one. I suppose I should look at the fullers timetable and work out how I can fit that in. It would be good to be able to acheive it in a daytrip. Even better if I could find the Coastal cache on the same day. Might have to go visit icon_wink.gif a friend in Whangarei for a couple of days too, oh and maybe have a catchup visit with another mate in Kaikohe icon_biggrin.gif Mind you it sounds like my workload is about to pick up again. Introducing a friend to geocaching tommorrow all going well, I need to do a maintenance visit to Vanishing River, so will let him hunt it, and then possibly Kiwi Xmas Tree and Braemar Springs as well. In any case, the additional activity is all good icon_smile.gif

You could take the 11am ferry from Auckland and get the cache in time for the 2.20pm sailing from Rangitoto. Also the 1pm from Auckland and 4.20pm return would work. That should give you time to find another cache afterwards.

I'm looking at doing a northern reccy myself.

i figured it would be very important for the GPSr to have an idea of the time. It needs to know what the correct GMT offset would be so it could match that to the almanac. For your unit to know how far it is from a satelite it would need to know exactly what time that signal was sent... wouldn't it? it's a GPSr not a GPS_transmitter... so it doesn't bounce a signal there and back.

I don't disagree - it is vital for a GPSr to know the time. But it does not need to know the GMT offset (ie the country that you're in) as all the satellites transmit a common time.. Without any research on the matter, AFAIK, the almanac is only really used to speed up a fix after power-on - which is why it takes an eTrex about 10 seconds or so to get its first fix, but when it comes new out of its box it has to build an almanac from scratch of the satelites overhead.

Ok, I know that numbers don't really mean anything, and this stat is only going to last another week or so (until Gav gets back from the US) but currently according to Dan's Stat Site we have 1 more physical find in New Zealand than Gav icon_wink.gif (but he beats our pants off in total finds)

Of course when Gav gets back from the US he has 30+ local caches to find,so we are going to enjoy it while it lasts.

These stat sites seem to be inaccurate, I know for mine I have hidden 6 or 7 caches but it says I have hidden none. icon_confused.gif

Perhaps that could be a new webpage to be created by one of New Zealands computer skill-blessed cachers!!! icon_smile.gif

Your'e right Nick about stats not being important, but theres nothing like a bit of good natured competition icon_wink.gif

Yeah Dan had a problem for a while with the 'hidden' caches - you can check what he has on file from you (using 'User' page) and update it using the 'Missing Logs' page.

Jeremy is having a crack down on programs that slurp data from the GC.com website, so this would probably not be a good idea icon_frown.gif

(see here and here) Though I do have the scripts that geocacheuk.com use for the UK stats, so it would not take too much work to implement.

The counts given in the summary don't seem to add up to what's in the log list for me. I've tried to add a missing log but it doesn't seem to take it.

Well I don't know about everyone else, but it truely seems to be a silly season this year icon_rolleyes.gif.

Tauranga Grid locked over the harbour bridge this afternoon after a minor accident on the causeway. Yay 1 hour 15 minutes to travel from the Mount to Tauranga, normally a 5 minute trip. I actually wish they'd put the toll back on it so it wouldn't grid lock anymore icon_eek.gif.

I had hoped to get a few more caches in by now, but alas other things keep cropping up. Yesterday morning my sister appeared back from the UK for Christmas, also with friends and relatives paying spontaneous visits I don't know if I'm going to get any more in before Christmas but I'm not complaining icon_wink.gif. (Mental note, Must take sister geocaching)

Now as for the prospect of unwanted presents appearing in caches, that is something I hadn't thought of, but hey, why not? One mans junk is another mans treasure after all. Gee, will we see a cache armed with 2 pairs of Y fronts, 3 pairs of socks etc? Will anyone ever take them? On another note, whilst working for Telecom some 10 to 15 years ago, I remember unpacking the NEC NEAX61E exchange equipment (from Japan), on the inventory lists was packets of lint free cloth. Well these packets of lint free cloth never got used, in fact they were incinerated at the hospital in there plastic bags, the bags contained used cotton underwear, complete with skid marks icon_frown.gif. These Neax exchanges were the downfall of most Telecom technicians as they required practially no maintenance and replaced mechanical exchanges which required lots. Tauranga went from nearly 100 technicians to about 5.

But I digress. I'm considering creating a temporary cache, a multi-virtual cache, one others could do in their city. What I'm thinking of doing is creating a list of waypoints, complete with instructions to visit the best illuminated houses, a Christmas lights trail. The BOP Times actually publishes one, and I'm thinking about creating a cache theme. What do others think? Would it be worth the effort?

Oh, and by the way, in case I don't catch your attention again before the big day... Merry Christmas!

I can't beleive that Christmas is becoming such a sensitive word in our society. Unbeleivable, I thought the idea of our society was to be tolerant of other beleifs, so why can't they tolerate our Christmas? Gee, I'm going off on a tangent again. Enjoy the "Summer Season" everyone icon_biggrin.gif.
