Promoting the sport?

Any ideas on promoting Geocaching here in New Zealand? Obvously we need more stashes to make it interesting but its a sort of "chicken and the egg" situation.

Well I have been a busy little bee over the last few months. I have now placed 17 caches in total (mostly in the South Island). They say 'stash it and they will come', so I hope this encorages other new geocaches to do the same, then I might have a stash nearby that I could find .

Hopefully I will be in the S.I later this year.

Have sadly had to remove the Auckland Urban Cache as I have moved flat. I am currently sourcing a new location.

 

South Auckland Stash still going and has been visited a few times.

The sport needs some publicity. Magazines like PCWorld and Netguide would be good as well as local papers.

If everyone here took an area and approached their local paper for a story, the sport would rocket in a month or so.

Hi! I'm a new geocacher from Christchurch.

 

I see we haven't got enough caches here yet so I might have to do something about that.

 

I've yet to go on my first hunt yet, but might try and fix that tomorrow and head up the Port Hills. Also heading down to Dunedin this weekend so might have to go for a few walks as well. Hehehe.

 

I've gone Garmin too - seems to be a rather popular brand. And some colleagues in a Civil Defence Rescue Team I know have also just got some units. I've told the leader that they should play geocaching as SAR practice hehe. I'll keep you posted.

Went for a wee trek around the Port Hills today and found my first cache. Didn't have too much trouble except for all the sheep pebbles and the nice wet tussocks.

 

Got the 260 Dunedin map today and have a fair idea where to head this weekend, whilst killing time before the game

 

Guess I better start making some caches when I get back hehe.

A good street map will come in handy too.

 

My Mount Cargill and Flagstaff Hill stashes may be a bit difficult if the cloud base is really low that day (that's if you want to see where you're going).

 

My Botanical Gardens and Unity Park stashes might be harder than you think, especially if the flags have been nicked.

 

You had better get working on your stashes soon .

Game was a lot of fun tonight, so only just had a chance to update the caches. Loved the flagstaff and cargill stashes - if I had had more time I would have liked to do the longer walks on Flagstaff. Most enjoyable and an excellent job. Bummber 'bout Unity though.

Ah rediguana, you may have been counting your chickens with your four finds last weekend.

 

I checked on the remains of my Unity Park stash today, it was still there and in good condition! You should update your log entry (try to keep your account of how you didn't find the stash).

 

It seems that some local kids had bent the flag and moved it about 5 m East of the stash. the crossed sticks were still directly above the stash (one is significantly larger than the other). I replaced the flag in its original position (about 1 to 1.5 m South of the stash).

 

As I said in the stash report, the difficulty increases from 2 to 4 if the markers have been moved. You were doing so well, better luck next time .

Well I suppose that is good news then that the stash is still there! At least I know exactly where to look next time... log duely changed.

 

Guess I'll have to come back down for the Bledisloe and find it for real next time hehe.
