+DxChallenged
Hey! I live in Akron, NY not too far from Niagra Falls. The family and I have done all the caches within the US and a 35 mile radius from our house. The closest now are those just over the border into your fare country. I haven't crossed over...since the 9/11 thing. Right now seems like a great time. I fully intend on answereing the "What do you plan on doing" question with a geocaching answere. Hey, right now we keep a his and hers GPS on the dash! What else are we could we say? Any problems with this? I think that I need to print out the geocaching card that was mentioned in the posts a month ago. thanks for the help! +clatmandu
Hi Debb, I have only been to Canada once since 9-11, that was to S.St. Marie and beyond. Had no trouble crossing there, but here in SE Mich, it probably takes a little longer. I do plan to head over when the weather gets a little warmer. There are clusters of caches in Toronto 3hr away and Kitchner 2hr away, so I'll do some camping when I go. I just got my Canadian Goecoins yestrday, so I'm getting prepared. Just remember to take some extra ID, passport, Birthcert., etc. I'm wondering what the coast guard will do when we kayak across the river to Canada. Are they going to approach with their guns drawn? Could be interesting!! Have fun on the Can. caches. Clayton Quote Link to comment
+Olar
Hi Dx.. I find the best thing is use the KISS principal. Keep It Simple Stupid. I wouldn't even try to explain what Geocaching is. I'm simply going hiking for the day or camping for the weekend or spending the day at the Casino. Something like that. Have your passport or birth certificate handy and in full view but only hand it out to them if they ask for it. If you cross at Niagara then you will be just one of many tourists visiting for the day. Have an enjoyable day and hope you have some luck bagging a few caches. Happy Caching, Olar "if you come to a fork in the trail, take it!" Quote Link to comment
J.A.R.S.
There are a few in the Niagara area (St Catherine's, Burlington, Hamilton, Stoney Creek). I haven't had a chance to try them out yet (except Websters Falls, our first and one of the best finds) but I'm looking forward to seeking them out, the Niagara Escarpment area is really quite nice. quote:Originally posted by clatmandu: Hi Debb, I have only been to Canada once since 9-11, that was to S.St. Marie and beyond. +300mag
Hey DX If you cross at Watertown about 1.30 hour+or- you'll get to Ottawa. We also have a fair amount of interesting caches in the area. If you have your passport you dont need your birth certif.Have fun . Quote Link to comment
Rybren
General rules for a trouble-free border crossing(in either direction) 1. Bring proof of citizenship for everyone in the vehicle. 2. Bring written parental permission if you are bringing kids that aren't yours. 3. Don't BS the Customs Officers. It'll only make them suspicious of your true intentions and could create lengthy delays or vehicle searches, and generally turn a pleasant trip into an ugly and miserable experience. This has been paraphrased from my wife, the Customs Officer. Quote Link to comment

+300mag
Hey Deb I would suggest April. Usually May is black fly season. If you get here in early May you might be alright. If not you'll head back home running looking like a raw steak May and June especially are bug spray season . Quote Link to comment

+DxChallenged
Hey! I know what you mean about the bugs. We were in Erie last weekend. Had been warned by the cache owner several times about ticks. So I went and bought the appropriate spray..Family scoffed at me but I sprayed them anyway. On the way out of the park for lunch I discovered a tick on the book I had while I cached (it was a book ref. cache). family didn't laugh after that!! Now we are in Harrisburg and the spray came with us... April is sounding better and better! Perhaps that's why the tick was so sluggish in the car...Just sat on the LOTR book....Suppose that I could have put a piece of tape on him, secured him to the cover of the book and had a sovenier Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888) Quote Link to comment
