Cache Canucks
Here's the response that I received from Garmin today: * * * * Subj: RE: Canadian Topo ...future MapSource release? Date: 03-Apr-03 14:18:59 Eastern Standard Time From: Cartography@garmin.com (Cartography Mailbox) To: XXXXXXXX@aol.com ('XXXXXXXX@aol.com') Sir, Thank you for contacting Garmin Cartography. At this time, Garmin has yet to produce a Canadian Topographic product, as you know. This is something we would have likely produced long ago, but the government agencies that control this data ask a very high price for the data. However, we have recently been exploring some new topo data possibilities, and there may be reason for optimism in the coming year. I can't speculate on any possible details at this time, because nothing has been finalized. Thank you for your interest in Garmin GPS. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Please include all previous correspondence when replying to this message. +tirediron
He's right about the price! I sent an enquiry to NR Canada asking about pricing, and to get the whole country in digital format runs about $1 700 000.00!!!!! Fortunately, you can download the whole Topo for free, so that will work in the meantime.. still, nice to know it's in the works. BTW, thanks for doing the legwork on this! Quote Link to comment
Lazair lll
How do you get this Topo for free please? Quote Link to comment
+tirediron
You can get all of the Toporama maps from NR Canada here They are available in either 1:50 000 or 1:250 000. The quality isn't quite as good as those you pay for, but the price is right. When you use them with EasyGPS, it's a good, inexpensive combo! Quote Link to comment

+Couparangus
The ditial topo data for Canada is available for free in 3 second accuracy and downloadable via FTP. Not in Garmin Mapsource format though I'm afraid! If you can turn it into something useful for a Garmin eMap, or any displayable format, that would be good. I suspect this is the same source that Garmin is working with right now. use FTP and go to edcsgs9.cr.usgs.gov User "guest" password "guest@unknown". I'll let you do the digging, like I did, to find it. Cheers! Coupar-Angus Quote Link to comment
+DocMagoo
Spoke with GPS Central in Calgary yesterday, and the gentleman there mentioned to keep an eye out for Garmin to introduce topo (program or features) by December. Guess we'll have to wait and see. The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being -- The Message Quote Link to comment
