FRS RADIOS

Hi All!

Just curios??...How many people have FRS radios?..ie. Motorola "talkabouts".

I know channel 2 has been decided as the Geo caching channel. Has anyone had the pleasure of talking to other geo cachers by this means?

I just picked up a set and I'm curios if I should take one on my adventures..

thanks!

When my kids and I go out we use them all the time.

I never talked to another cacher though.

When we go drive by Wonderland my son always tells others to met him at the drop zone.

The most frs radios I have seen being used in 1 spot was at SARS Stock this summer and you could not find a clear channel.

FRS radios are good if you're in close distances of each other. I find them usefull when cruising in convoys and when splittng up with groups. They're only .5 W which is pretty pathetic, however, they do not require licencing, use standard sized batteries, small, and affordable. They're also universal so other people in your group can bring their own of another brand and still be able to communicate (eg. motorola, panasonic, cobra).

The range of these radios are generally line of sight. Objects such as mountains, buildings, and trees tend to block/absorb the rf significantly minimizing the range. It is not surprising they work well over a lake as the line of sight is near perfect and I believe rf can bounce off the lake further increasing the range.

I use them when I fly the balloon...they work great. The only time I use them caching is when the mrs. minds the cachemobile or hangs with rayzor while I go hunting. I did use them while doing the Victoria Cache Machine but we were so far behind the pack that we rarely heard anything. Got good reception at The Witches Hat though!

We have three, all different, and use them a lot. Here's our $0.02;

Radio 1; Cheap CONAIR ($1.99 after Rebate from Fry's in the states).

+none

-No sub channels

-AAA batteries (which are expensive and don't last long)

-Too easy to bump on (push button on)

Radio 2; GE, $19.95 from London Drugs.

+AA batteries

+sub channels

+outside air temp reading (useless but fun)

-too easy to bump on (push button)

Radio 3; Motorola

+AA batteries

+sub channels

Bottom line, get one with subchannels, takes AA batteries, and doesn't accidentally switch itself on rattling around in your pack.
