Ok from what I gether here most are using Softmap or Fugawi in Canada.

I know in Softmap if I download a trail I can save it in an ozi.plt file format, does Fugawi do this?

I forgot to include those using Ozi too.

Now what we could do is forget gpx format because of the conversion problem for trail files. But we have a common file in the *.plt file format.

We now could exchange our trail file in *.plt files so others could use them in there gps's in a common format.

If you use g7towin and download your trail file and save it as an ozi.plt file then you could sent it out and we have at least 3 mapping programs that could use the file. g7towin will also upload the *plt file to your gps.

Anyone want to set up a site for Canada where we could exchange these files and collect trail files and waypoints for hikes we do this summer.

Or if someone requeted we could make a trail map off our mapping program and then send it out.

I would like to get a *.plt file started of the Bruce Trail in sections for all to share as a start.

No! Fugawi saves it's tracks in .trk format which I presume is their own. I can however export a track as a text file which possibly can be imported by Ozi, Softmap, etc.

If you want to try it gm100guy then send me your email address and I can send a sample file. I have numerous tracks of Bruce Trail hikes saved.

Cheers, Olar

Hi Olar, if you have any tracks of the Bruce Trail that I can load into MapSend or even into my GPS, that would be great. It is very frustrating that the BTA do not make maps of their hiking trails available for the general public on the net. Many other trail systems are available on the net and some are even more than willing to mail you their trail maps and brochures. Wish the BTA did this, but they just seem to be in it for the money in my opinion. Sorry for the rant at the end there.

Howdy Res. The saved tracks that I have are various short hikes on a combination of the main trail and side trails. I'm not sure you would get a good idea of the trail system from them especially since a number of them were loop hikes. Like I mentioned the only way I can send someone a track file is in Fugawi's .trk format or a text format. I have no idea if Mapsend will import either one. (I can't do it with Mapsource.)

I too wish that the BT maps were available digitally but for the time being we have to use those in their book of trail guide and maps. Some day they will modernize. What they do have in conjunction with Fugawi is a complete set of GPS tracks for both maintrail and sidetrails. These can be purchased for $20 and are used with Fugawi's mapping software.

Let me know if you want a sample track and which format to try.

Cheers, Olar

Hi Olar, I do have a Fugawi CD for Southern Ontario, but it look slike it only has Fugawi BSB Viewer on it, so I don't know if any tracks could load with that...looks like it can only view maps. MapSend does seem to support .trk files, so if you have any from your area or west of there, feel free to send them my way, especially those in the Halton area.

Thanks,

Hi Olar

I checked g7towin and it will open your trk files so I guess we could use it for a conversion application to send to other mapping programs.

Send me a sample and I will open it and see if it will then save as and ozi and I can post it into my softmap program

I recently bought the Bruce Trail track data from Fugawi for $20 CDN,

http://www.fugawi.com/docs/maptopocan.html#topocanbruce

and I received a roughly 256k zipfile by email containing three files with a .TRK extension (notice that it's uppercase). I had hoped that I could import these into G7ToWin and save them in G7ToWin format for import into SoftMap but when I try to open them I get an error message saying "Unknown input file format". I believe that according to the documentation these are "Track Library" files rather than simple tracks. Does anyone know of a way, short of buying the Fugawi software, that I can convert these files to OziExplorer, G7ToWin or .CSV format?

TIA, Bob.

The Bruce Trail data from Fugawi is in version 3.x files.

That explains it. I wonder if future versions of G7toWIN will support version 3 data. Thanks for your help. Cheers, Bob.
