+Biggles Bear
You'll only find them in and around certain areas of Sydney, hence the name Sydney Funnel web. Spiders in the rest of Australia are relatively harmless by comparison. So come on down and have some fun. Quote Link to comment
+Wallabies
Never mind them, you gotta look out for the snakes and crocodiles.... Just kidding, you'd be one horribly unlucky SOB to have any probs with any of the above Quote Link to comment
cwoper
You guys are way to cool,I'm going to have to come down there and hang out you dudes. The heck with the Funnel Webs.God bless Steve and Terry Irwin Quote Link to comment
The 2 Dogs
Who ever said that there are no harmful spiders outside of the Sydney area hasn't been around too much. I'll give you some examples. The Red back Spider: Highly Toxic Venom and Painful Bite. The Mouse Spider: The female is reputed as having venom more toxic that a Funnel Web. Although she has far less in volume, she could kill a child if bitten. The White Tail Spider. Has highly Necrotic Venom which causes pregressive tissue decay and can make you seriously ill. The wolf spider: Very painful bite with symptoms similar to the White tail. Not to mention the Black Wishbone, the Trapdoor the Bird Eating and the Fiddleback all with very toxic venom. Unlike the United States. You need to be careful of many poisonous animals including these guys wherever you go in Australia. Hounddog Quote Link to comment
LazyLeopard
Yeah, red-backs like to live in piles of dead wood. Definitely need looking out for while you're rummaging through those bushes looking for that box. I'm not keen on the dugites and tiger snakes either.... Purrs... +Team Gunn Parker
No one has mentioned the drop bears yet, you have t o watch out for those guys, they are big and fury and have huge claws. Take care when down under. Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day: Winnie the Pooh Quote Link to comment

+Biggles Bear
Just in case you’re wondering why the Sydney Funnel web is such a cranky customer, you only have to look at his prospects (it’s usually the male that bites people). As soon as he is mature he leaves the nest in search of a mate (that’s why you’re more likely to be bitten by a male as the females don’t usually leave their nest, and can live up to ten years). Once the relation ship has been consummated the female kills the hapless male. Wouldn’t you be a just a little cranky if you knew that was coming? "No matter where you go..... there you are." Jedda
Dont worry about those "other spiders", worry about the Huntsmans, they will scare the hell out of you. Think of a spider the size of your hand that likes to hide in places where caches are hidden, can run like an olympic sprinter!, and also enjoy "appearing" while your driving, they love cars almost as much as they love bedroom ceilings. Wierd thing is that you would be pretty unlucky getting bitten by one as they are pretty timid, but dadgum THEY ARE BIG!! But they dont need to bite to kill, just having one in your car is enough to bring on a heart attack! Quote Link to comment
+Biggles Bear
Yes, they do seem to like to appear out off the air con. Vent at the time most likely to cause you to have an accident. "No matter where you go..... there you are." Buckaroo Banzai Quote Link to comment
+Team Piggy
Had one living in our spare car once, it was HUGE ! Leg span the size of your hand.. The wife refused to drive it because I could never catch the sucker, so she made me sell the car instead ! (No charge for the spider..).. Quote Link to comment
+Biggles Bear
I'm just glad we don't have to share the bush with anything that going to rip your head if you get in it's way. That forgetting about Drop Bears of course "No matter where you go..... there you are." Buckaroo Banzai Quote Link to comment
Cholo
quote:Originally posted by Biggles Bear:Once the relation ship has been consummated the female kills the hapless male. The same thing happens to humans, only it takes longer and is more painful. Quote Link to comment

Anyone else watch rove live last week?, "apparently eric the crocodile" from the reptile park has bitten the heads off 4 potential mates since captivity! Quote Link to comment

Anyone else watch rove live last week?, "apparently eric the crocodile" from the reptile park has bitten the heads off 4 potential mates since captivity! OY! He's a grumpy one he is! ROFL... god I love Steve Irwin. My family sits around watching his show on Animal planets and laughs like mad at the combination of his general insanity combined with his Aussie-isms. He is absolutely in-freakin-sane! The thing is too, he'll never get killed by an animal. He'll probably die in some bizzare toaster accident. (Steve digs around toaster with metal knife) "Bloody piece of toast, he's a mean little bug..." BHHZZZZTTTTTTT!!! (A few seconds later, Steve regains consciousness on the floor.) "Oy! He's a grumpy one!" (Goes back to dig around in the toaster with knife.) I'm more frightened of Chironex Fleckeri then any spider out there, to be totally honest. damian007
I heard you can get rid of the Drop Bears with Skyhooks. Funnel Web Spiders can be disguised by painting them with Chequered Paint and you can fix almost anything with a Bullring Remover.. Damian Mueller damian007@optusnet.com.au Quote Link to comment
+Omally
Id've thought the most dangerous creature you guys have down there would be the Pommie Back-Packer! Just when you think it's safe to go down yer local boozer, stone me there's another one behind the bar! Neutiquam erro. Quote Link to comment
+Bear_Left
Worth a small extract from The Confusing Country "The second confusing thing about Australia are the animals. They can be divided into three categories: poisonous, odd, and sheep. It is true that of the ten most poisonous arachnids on the planet, Australia has nine of them. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that of the nine most poisonous arachnids, Australia has all of them. However, there are curiously few snakes, possibly because the spiders have killed them all. But even the spiders won't go near the sea (see below)." Quote Link to comment
