Discover only TBs?

I picked up a TB in a cache today - out in the country without data, so we couldn't check it - now only to find it is marked as 'discover only' - indeed we can only do a write-note or discover, not a grab. It wasn't listed as being in the cache we found it in either, for obvious reasons.....

I wasn't sure this was a thing? - discover only.... and I always figured myself as TB savvy..... can anyone explain?

Apparently this is a thing. This TB was never meant to leave the hands of the owner, but it was physically grabbed from the TB table of an event called Clear Water Mega in 2019. Since then it has been moved around of course. Many people (including myself) don't check the goals of a TB online until they get home, some not at all. I guess the owner would like this one back, if possible.

How is a TB set to this status though? I'm curious now....

When the TB owner first activates the TB  that is a choice selected by him. It can be made collectable or not, etc. I imagine it can be changed by the TB owner later on, but not sure.

So in its history you should see to activated with a series of "discovered" with no retrieves or drops.

I do have a question though: and maybe you cannot tell unless checking its history.  If a TB is Discoverable only, not Retrievable, should it not stay in the original cache container? If so and it is moved in error how is it corrected -  taken back to original spot? I know it can be played with on the web - grabbed and proceed from there; but physically how?

Virtually, on the page, the TB is "in the hands of the Owner".   It shows no movement. In fact it's been moving since, "it was physically grabbed from the TB table of an event called Clear Water Mega in 2019."

As a practical matter, the owner should 1) move it OUT of collection, and 2) make it NOT collectible.

Then lee737 could "grab it" using the tracking code,  and after that it could properly travel from cache to cache.

Alternately, some kind soul might contact the owner and mail it to them.

Yep, seems an error by the owner started this.  One even had a note that it was found "in my daughter's stuff...".   :)

Have you seen the trackable car decals?  Same thing, just that TOs usually carry that trackable with them, not leave it on a table to be grabbed.

Most we know "repurpose" a trackable lost, using the trackable code for a patch, hat, backpack, etc for people to discover when met on the trail.

I have several trackables in my collection, which means they can only be discovered.  For example, I made a trackable geocaching "business" card, well actually a few hundred of them.  But if they could be picked up and moved and dropped and visited it'd be chaos, because there are so many floating around.  By moving it to my collection, anyone who finds one can discover it, but can't move it.

With trackable decals for vehicles, you wouldn't want it to be in your collection, because generally owners log that the trackable on their vehicle visited certain events or caches or whatnot.
