KD5JXU
If anyone is interested the NorthEast Oklahoma Simplex Group will be launching a Balloon in the next few weeks. Payloads will include APRS, CW beacon, Xband Repeater and whatever else someone comes up with. APRS is using a Palmpilot GPS. The ORB-5 reached elevations of 77,695. Now that is an antenna! If you want to track the Balloon go to findyou.com. more information on the Oklahoma Research Balloon can be found at neoksimplex.com How does this fit in to GEOCACHE? WE gatherer the Grid Coords from APRS. Then we go to the last known position, and we break out Radio Detection equipment, Then we retrieve the balloon. Think of it as a moving GEOCACHE. Any Questions e-mail me or go to the neok website Rich and the Lost Yonkers Tribe, Seen My GPS? 145.130 - Quote Link to comment
+MissJenn
Sounds cool. Perhaps it would also be good if you posted this topic in the appropriate local forum? I think OK is included in the Great Plains forum. -- I am looking for cache recommendations for Salem, Mass. Got any? Quote Link to comment
+boulist44
How come a geocacher gets the wrong forum or indeed the wrong continent. However give me the co-ords and I will look out for it. Quote Link to comment
KD5JXU
18th of October is the next balloon launch. if you are not interested disregard this. if you are interested go to findu.com and track orb-6 or kd5jxu-1. more info for radio frequencies can be found at www.neoksimplex.com. The balloon will have a GPS transmiting into ham frequencies and can be tracked around the world. This is why I put this in this area missjenn. I wish you luck on your geo caching. a great time to visit nature and all of it's beauty. Hope to meet up on some hunt. will be going to the northeast next summer. KD5JXU
something of interest that recently, thank you geocache.com. Is that after the infomous 9-11 the goverment put restrictions on gps's. They will not work after Mach 1, like my ole rusty ford will do that. After alltitudes of 65,000',if the ole ford get's that high I'll sell it cheap, they are now inoperative. if you have older GPSes hold on to them they will be valueable to people that log for high alltitudes such as unmanned ballooning. +Jamie Z
I believe the speed and altitude limitations have always been there, and are not a reaction to terrorist threats. Jamie Quote Link to comment
KD5JXU
do some research, in the early 80's you could not get an accurate distance measurement with GPS, it soon opened by the goverment. Harry and I have researched it. some GPSes are limited though. check out some of the data retrieved on unmanned balloons. thanks for the input.
