+FlagMan
Were only going to be in the area the 28th, 29th and 30th. No time for hiking or biking this trip. Just a good taste of the area would be great. Greta Garbo's Phone is a fun, quick one that will get you to La Jolla. While there, you might try The Cave Store and Green Eggs and Ham and Cross With Honor. That will get you around La Jolla a bit. If you want a great tour of UCSD, try The Stuart Collection and/or Boo's Door. Along these same lines in the Point Loma area, you might enjoy Rosecroft Gardens, Grandparent's Cache, Lucinda, and Homeland Defense #1 (pardon the shameless plugs on my own caches) Have Fun!! +Duncan!
There's also an excellent puzzle cache called "The Artist's Secret" inside the park as well that is worth the effort to solve the puzzle. The Artist's Secret appears to have been muggled according to recent DNFs. Duncan, can you check on this one since you work down in that area? --TT-- Glad to report that "The Artist's Secret" cache is still there. Mr. V is doing a great job with guard duty. +Tycho52
I just completed the DAK Girls Stuck in the Merge series today. What a blast! To make it more fun for yourselves, wait until it rains for about 6 days in a row, then give it a go! Seriously, this was a very fun cache. I thought I knew my way around the neighborhood, but I was wrong. Have fun! Quote Link to comment

+FlagMan
Thanks for all the good information about the area. Don't forget the Coronado area. Just about anything there will take you to some beautiful urban sightseeing spots. Either take the bridge or the ferry and start at the Ferry Landing Cache. Just search "nearest to" from that cache and you will be able to work your way down the penninsula to the Hotel Del Coronado. The Hotel Del is quite an historic landmark in San Diego. For a tour of downtown San Diego and the Gaslamp district, you might like World's First Fitness Cache. Have fun!! Quote Link to comment
+Tycho52
Had anyone seen this post regarding the Girl Scout Encampment in San Diego this February? One of the Lost Girls will be attending the encampment as a camper. I know that when they discussed geocaching at a recent troop meeting, the girls were all very intrigued. Any help that anyone can provide would go miles towards helping young girls learn about the basic science behind GPS technology and would expose them to the game of geocaching. I've got a scheduling conflict that wont allow me to help out. Quote Link to comment

+Dan-oh
North County cacher spotted, was it you? On Thursday 1-13 around 3 or 3:30 on N/B I-15 I saw a blue Suburban with both the GEO and GPS oval decals. It also had a CTR decal, maybe for Valley Center? I kept following in and out of traffic, honking and waving my arms but she just didn't see me. Wow, some driver sure go fast. When she pulled into the police department lot, the officer was waving hello to me. What nice people thay are! Too bad I couldn't find a space and had to leave. Quote Link to comment

Thanks!! cropcircl signs, signs everywhere are signs. blockin out the scenery, breakin my mind. do this, don't do that CAN'T YOU READ THE SIGNS!!! Some areas, such as this one, are ambiguous about private property. Bitty Spider's First Cache is another. As I posted in the log, coming in from the north, you will see a No-Trespassing sign that appears to cover the area with the cache. But, coming in from the south, you will see a fireroad/trail with no signs at all. So, if challenged by anyone, including the police, you can easily point out the lack of No-Tresspassing signs where you came in. No jury will convict. Just make sure you can't see a Tresspassing sign from where you end up. In these ambiguous situations, it's up to the individual cacher to make a decision for himself/herself. Myself, I'm going for it everytime. Here's a tip that hasn't failed me yet: if asked what you are doing, don't say you're geocaching, say you are on a scavenger hunt. Almost everyone has done those and will tend to relate to you better. If you say geocaching, you're likely to get a stare and raise even more suspicion. The area around your cache does have pretty clear No trespassing signs, and as I noted in the log, I had a woman hide in order to watch me at the cache site. The area is one of three being looked at as a location for a new Escondido high school. (The most logical in my opinion. Can you image one west of the intersection of Del Dios Hwy and Via Rancho Pkwy? What a traffic mess!) There's a very, very cool trail I discovered going down from Mountain Meadows to the Lawrence Welk area. Unfortunately, there's a No Trespassing sign from the Valley Center Water District right at the trail head. You can tell that everyone hikes, runs, and bikes it, but I can't put a cache there. *&%@$%$@ Parsa Quote Link to comment

+Latitude 32
Hello, got a little (maybe big) FYI for the San Diego cachers out there. I co-worker of mine (SDPD for those who didn't know) got sent to Presidio Park the other day to take a vandalism report from a city ranger. After getting the info for his report, which was a tagging incident, the ranger asked him if he had ever heard of geocaching. My buddy, who has made posts in log books as "Officer Friendly" explained that he has heard of it. She voiced concern about some damage to the vegitation in the area and feels that geocachers may be to blame. I guess she had contacted a geocacher on the hunt the week before. Anyway, she told my buddy that she is going to try and pull up the coords and remove the caches in the area. I'm going to try n contact this ranger and have a chat within the next couple of days. I saved her butt from being kicked by a wacko transient, so I figure she owes me one. A GPS in the hands of a rouge ranger could have a huge impact on MANY of the San Diego caches. Many of these rangers work several parks within the county so, let's keep our fingers crossed. I'll keep you updated with my progress. Any suggestions are welcome... Quote Link to comment
Parsa
Thanks for using your pull. Frankly, I wouldn't mind having your name in case some San Diego officer thinks I'm a terrorist or something. I'm always concerned that an officer will get a "suspicious individual" call while I'm out searching around. I still have a half dozen "newer" caches down in the park to get. Maybe I'll head out there this week.... Parsa Quote Link to comment

I welcome any dialog with park personnel or rangers. If there is no formal policy against caching, then it is or should be allowed. The concept of forbidden till allowed irritates me to no end. The SDRP didn't have a policy against or at least a published policy against caching. At some point they removed caches and they examined all the ins and outs. The examination was a good thing. Ultimately they have a pretty non-restrictive policy that allows recreational use while protecting park resources. The informal policy of ONE ranger could be horrible. I'm sure the formal policy of the park and the city will ultimately be accommodating. Again, I welcome the dialog. ClimberX, care to share your views? Quote Link to comment

It is maintained through the City of San Diego, in fact many of the rangers that work Balboa, also work in Presidio. Funny story! I know you felt Chuy. I had a similar thing happen to me one time while BowHunting a while back. I had to walk fairly close to a heard of about 200 head of cattle to get to my treestand. Anyhow, I walked by them with no problems but then they started following me. The last thing you want when you are hunting is to have 200 cows nearby. Anyhow, I had to alter my course so they would not end up under my stand. I did a huge loop wasting a lot of time. But the dumb things kept following me. Anyhow, I ran and finally ditched them and made it to my stand without them trailing me. About 30 minutes later there were 200 cows chomping on grass about 50 yards from my stand. I think the deer must have paid the cows to do that! Edited January 17, 2005 by TrailGators Quote Link to comment

I know that a few routes have been posted in the past, but I can't recall who did them. The only ones I did that are still active are The Tortoise and Fattboy's First. All the others were cremated. I'm definitely up for multiple cache finds in a non-urban area. I found 14 in San Diego yesterday, and some of them drove me crazy trying to find parking and the best way into the cache area. For the maximum numbers, I'd suggest starting at the parking spot off Mission Gorge Rd, just to the west of the visitors centre. Essentially, TRviolin, Dr. Boggis, halstaff, and others, have created a power trail all the way from this parking north to the 52. Start south, and work your way from Stuck on You along the trail to the north, past Don't Fade Away and Hang'Em high, up the stairs to South Fortuna, down the saddle, and up to north Fortuna, and down to 52 Pickup. Should be able to get 11 caches this way. A few side spur trails, and you can pick up 3 or 4 more. As I plot it, there it only space for three or four more caches along this trail (mostly between Saddle Up and North Fortuna) before saturating the entire trail due to the 0.1 mile exclusion rule. The entire Visitor's Centre loop is saturated. You can get 7 caches along it Hurry, and get a cache in there before this Oklahoma Land rush passes you by! --TT-- Quote Link to comment

Does anyone have advice on a route or routes that would feature many of them without killing me off all at once? ... I had a feeling someone someday would be asking for this. I saved my tracks from Dec 16 when I visited 15 caches. I parked at the end of Clairemont Mesa Bd and hiked close to 10 miles counterclockwise up to Fortuna Mtn and back. You could make it 9 miles if you avoid backtracking as much as I did. If you or anyone else uses MapSource, send me an an email and I will email you the .gdb file. I don't have tracks for the other side of Fortuna, but those caches are relatively easy to access if you park anywhere off the Father Junepero Trial, except for the BMX one and others off Mission Gorge. Parsa
Thanks for all the replies. I'd probably plot in NG Topo. (.tpo or .tpg files) If you have a list of the order in which you did them, I could figure out the trails to take. Maybe someone would like to do some of these with me someday. I noticed that most of the caches only have about a dozen (or less) finds. Warning though... I'm a slow and steady type. I'm carrying too much extra baggage to do any hike like this without lots of stops on the uphill parts. I can hike 9 or 10 miles, but not in a short time period. I may start with that loop of 7. Feel free to saturate it before I get there! Parsa Quote Link to comment
