Sorry....LOL...I just couldn't help it....

hehe, cute.....sort of funny too because I had that same thought when I created it for him last night.....but when I looked at it in avatar 'size' it looked more like one of those timex glow in the dark watches....i figured it would have been more confusing so I removed it. ;)

What time are you planning on leaving tomorrow. I have a bug that wants to go to London. It is in my swag bag now, but I cannot drop it until tomorrw morning around 9 am.

Edit: Or you could come out tonight and get Circle of Lights - GCM6TF and I could hand it to you.

Gah! Arse-end of Santee? I don't think I'll have time to go all the way over there. It does look like a cool bug to move though. Maybe.....

The GPSr screen in the middle is funny, but it doesn't look as good avatar size it's true. I love all the help... I lightened it up a touch and made it bigger. Now I really really like it.

Dr Boggis: If you come by tonight, I will have it with me. But the cache is too small to hold the bug, so if you come during the "non-surprise" hours, you will have to try to find me.

If not, I will hand it off to somebody else that comes for thier surprise.

No dice, we fly at 5.30pm, but I'd left to find the cache before you posted that message! I didn't think about the TB not fitting in the cache, since it's listed as small and not micro. There's no room for anything but the log in the cache, it's definitely a micro!

Speaking of game shows, I think TT would be good at Amazing Race. With his love of puzzles, being FTF, and his physical agility, all he would need would be a partner his equal. I haven't met cow spots so I don't know what his physical abilities are but...

Just one more line on his game show resume...

I love Amazing Race, and have often told my wife that if I ever wanted to be on a reality show for some reason, Amazing Race is the one show in that genre that doesn't seem cheesy. It genuinely looks like fun, and I usually root for the teams that appreciate the areas where they're travelling.

As for lil bro and I... Hmm. I've done some pretty mean hikes, so I think I've got the physical chops, but if we did the show I wonder how much we'd squabble.

Then again, they could probably count on a slight bump in viewership in the San Diego demographic market if we fielded a team in which TT got told what to do all the time! <_<

OK folks, I'm leaving in a couple of hours, not back until the 29th, so have a Happy Christmas (or whatever). Save some FTFs for me

Happy holidays Doc, and happy travel. Sorry about the misunderstanding. It made perfect sense in MY head. I hope you trip all the way out to the "Arse end of Santee" wasn't too terrible. I feel bad that I had you come all the way out here and it ended up for nothing.

That is a great show! My wife and I are also hooked! The show loves to put a people on that squabble to make things interesting, so maybe you'd be a good fit! Imagine hearing this: "TusconThompson and Cow Spots I am sorry to say that you are the last team to arrive! However, this was not an elimination round! I do have one question: why did you spend so much time looking for an ammo boxes stuck in cairns and bushes?!" <_<

TT: I told you we didn't have enough time to find that cache. Now all the other teams are way ahead of us.

TCS: We WOULD have had enough time if YOU could have solved the puzzle faster.

TT: I didn't see you solving the puzzle.

TCS: If we lose this race it's YOUR fault

Just goofing around at the office (I know, I'm supposed to be working ) waiting to go to a Holiday party and I ran across a reference to Keyhole. I signed up for the free trial. It's pretty fun to play around with, though it seems the visuals are slightly off on the coordinates that I put in (my address, a couple of caches of which I'm familiar with the terrain). The fly-bys are fun, as is the 3-d effect.

That's very cool - I had tried out the free NASA one earlier but it really takes a toll on my CPU. I can't quite get the hang of navigating this one though, although I got pretty good at flying around in the NASA one. Fun stuff!

Very cool stuff! I'm still playing with the Nasa's World Wind. I recently got a new PC so I can handle World Wind! I'll wait to get the Keyhole trial during the Holiday break. I guess I am Geogeek too! :D

The Keyhole images look better and load faster but they really need to make it easy to fly around like you would in a video game. But Google has it now so I'm sure it'll go places - we'll probably subscribe to it because it is cool and will be fun to go and buzz around places where people we know live.

Yeah, that's what we need... a bunch of guys running around outside a missile test site with GPS receivers in hand.  :D

I feel nervous looking for caches without the kids a lot - particularly those that are stashed under power line towers.

P.S. Parsa, we sent you an email re Colony Olivenhain with a photo of one of the buildings - can we log it yet?

P.P.S. Hmm, remind me not to go by the tooltips when using the clickable smiles here.

It looks like K-NIC does not post here much but if he's reading this, we recovered the two EWING PRESERVE caches today - mainly because we had put a TB into one and were worried the Rancho Santa Fe Security guys were going to confiscate them since they were archived three weeks ago. We'll put the TB's into our Secret Garden Math Runaround cache and return the caches to K-NIC when he gets back to us.

No worries NH, it was quite a pleasant drive, warm enough for me to put the top down in the Alfa, and I wasn't doing anything at work anyway, just last day faffing. I was back in the lab within an hour, so nobody even noticed

Now I'm in an internet cafe in London, and the 75F day on Friday seems like a long time ago!!

Hey Dr. Boggis, have another Guiness and faff about some more! Faffing is what I do all the time, I just didn't know that's what it was called. When I disappear on the weekends I'm geofaffing.

For those of you (like me) that didn't know what faffing was:

Glossary:

faff about/around [phrasal verb UK INFORMAL] To spend your time doing a lot of unimportant things instead of the thing that you should be doing: I wish you'd stop faffing about and do something useful!

I'm a little surprised that nobody noticed you faffing around. I for one always noticed when somebody does THAT right in front of me.

Anyway. Just to make you feel better, the temp dropped today. It was a misrible 65F most of the day.

For the hikers in the group, I did a Mt Woodson loop last week that was fantastic.

You can get 4 caches GCJ8M2, GC1CB, GCHZV0 and GCKXFD all within a 6 1/2 mile loop. Whatta bargain! OK, a power caching trail its not but its worth it. The climb up sure gets your heart pumping and the return of portion of the loop on the Fry-Koegle trail is great.

You can also see a good map of the Poway trail system at their city page http://www.ci.poway.ca.us/trails/poway_trails_map.pdf.

Speaking of hikers!: Rocket Man, Fkrexcal and I did the nearby Iron Mountain loop on Sunday. We opted not to do the other 4 mile loop because we wanted to get back to see the Charger game! The main Iron Mountain loop was also ~6 1/2 miles and had 5 caches. We plan on going back to get the other 7 caches on the other loop in the near future.

That's a nice trail map. Thanks for sharing the link. RM

Edit: I didn't like the way the trail map was cut in half right in the Mount Woodson area, so I combined the two pages. It prints out well on 11x17 paper. You can download the combined map here (3MB).

I found the first one with my 6yr old back in June; the others have been on my to-do list for some time. Might make for a goon night hunt. Maybe after the holidays, unless there's an interest before then. Dan-oh, did you park off the 67 at Woodson Dr./Archie Moore Rd.?

I parked on the west side of 67, just north of the fire station. The trail up Woodson starts nearest there and if you do the loop, dumps out closer to Archie Moore. If you don't cut the trail at the very end, its only a short walk back on the highway shoulder back to your car.

The views from Woodson south would be great at night. For sure I like to make do the hike again.

Ok yous guys. Ya might want to let us know when yous are goin some place cachin'!

I'll be off after next week for "winter break" (it's Christmas vacation... try moving it two weeks later and see how it flies. ). I'd be up for some weekday caching then.

In other news... I bought some geocaching related items on Ebay. I already owned a Handspring Visor Deluxe (Palm OS), and I bought a color Visor Prism on Ebay. I also bought a Magellan GPS Companion that slides into the Springboard slot on the Visors. It cost $50 to turn my PDA into a GPS navigation and mapping system. It came with free maps and software that are the same as Quo Vadis by Marcosoft. I tested it out and it's pretty cool. CacheMate and CacheNav pick the signal up from the Magellan just fine as well. I'm hoping to turn the Prism into an auto navigation system so I don't have to hook up my Powerbook anymore. I just need to buy a car charger for the Prism and the Magellan so I don't have to keep sticking batteries in the receiver. Now I have to find a topo program for the PDA too.

It's really too bad that Handspring quit making the Visors and got bought up by PalmOne. Those Springboard processor slots were cool. Developers were making everything to stick in the slot including modems, WiFi ethernet units, digital cameras, flash card adapters (I have CF and SmartMedia units), MP3 players, diabetes testers, voice recorders, cell phones, probe interfaces, at least three different GPS receivers, and lots of other modules.

I'm off Monday and Tuesday with my 6 and 8 yr old daughters. My parents reside in Escondido, so we may stop by Kit Carson Park after visiting grandma. I have only visited three caches in the general area; that leaves about 12 outstanding.

We're looking at Tuesday. Anyone want to join us, let me know.

;) WhooHoo! 500 caches found! :)

At the end of Oct, after the campout, I got to wondering if we could find 500 before our anniversary and we did it! We had to do about 120 in about a month & a half. We were doing quite well, until I got a bad cold that knocked me out for about 2 weeks. Since married people are supposed to share everything, Bob is just now getting his cold. B)

We started off the day seeing National Treasure and then headed out to do some of the Sandy Creek Cowboy Caches. (Those boys sure know how to make good caches!) Seeing the movie must have aligned the satelites for us because we found every cache we went after. That is always good news. B)B)

Congratulations!

We (Geocaching.com) were contacted recently by a Scout Leader in San Diego, CA looking for volunteers to help with a Girl Scout Encampment taking place in February of 2005. The girls in attendance are between the ages of 8 and 12 years old.

The objective is to find a few knowledgeable Geocachers to teach a compass and orienteering class, coupled with the more technical GPS and Geocaching aspects of navigation.

If anyone is interested, please send an email to contact at geocaching dot com and I'll provide you with the Scout Leader's contact info. Thanks!!

Nate

Groundspeak Inc.

This sounds very interesting. Even though my girls aren't in Girl Scouts, I'd love to help out but...unfortunately all my February weekends are already full!

Perhaps there's someone in the SD gang thats interested?

Anyone Interested in a Little Road Trip/4X4 Adventure?

Team Rocket Man, Trailgators and Fkrexcal are going on a 4X4 Geological mining tour.

The plan is to drive up the morning of December 29th and do the mining tour cache and some others in the area. Then we are staying at the Yucca Inn in Yucca Valley that night. The next day, we will do some more caching in the area before heading home in the afternoon. Here is a map of some of the caches in the area:

b63e93de-5fda-4d4e-a928-62fa14e8af5f.jpg

If you are interested, make a reservation at the hotel (or make other lodging plans) and e-mail me at igeocache@gmail.com to let me know you are interested. We can meet in Escondido and caravan up there, or just meet up there somewhere. I will coordinate all of that once I know who is going.

Thanks,

Rocket Man

Edit: Here are the locations of the mines on the mining tour (I won't give away the waypoints - that would be cheating):

Great - Does this mean I have to learn how to read a paper map?

Bush Prepares for Possible GPS Shutdown :o

"Any shutdown of the network inside the United States would come under only the most remarkable circumstances, said a Bush administration official who spoke to a small group of reporters at the White House on condition of anonymity. The GPS system is vital to commercial aviation and marine shipping. "

So it also basically says that it isn't very likely to happen! Obviously we all hope it doesn't happen. Anyhow, we would have to adapt and go back to orienteering techniques!

That was exact reaction I had when I saw the link in a blog on Boing Boing. (Note - Boing Boing is a collection of bizarre blogs, some of which aren't appropriate for kids and might offend some folks) If you open the Boing Boing archive, and Ctrl+F for "GPS", it'll take you to the blog.

It seemed like a sensationalistic blog, then upon opening the link, I was surprised to see that Netscape News with CNN would use such a doomsday headline. BTW, my sarcasm was intended in my original post. :D
