I'm sorry Yeshua's Girls archived their caches. I'll miss the Tranquility ones especially. It seems unfair to me as there are loads of bird watching related caches everywhere. I could name a few but I don't want reviewers to ban them too. Just put 'bird watch' in the keyword search...

Hope things work out for the YG.

We, too, will miss the YG caches...especially the Tranquility series! We sincerely hope that you reconsider your decision to archive them.

Not only that, but Groundspeak's other project, Waymarking.org, has a whole category devoted to bringing people to birdwatching locations. Speaking of YG's Biblical clues, something about "left hand not knowing what right hand is doing" comes to mind.

Just wanted to let you know that the date has been set for the 4th Annual Christmas Lights Geo-Walk. We chose Saturday, December 6th. I will be posting the cache page in the next few days. Can't wait to see everyone again! I'll put in a call to the weather center to ask for clear skies this time!

Just wanted to remind everyone about this Saturday! We'll have a little surprise hunt for the kidlets... Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones!

Now that desert season is upon us (and the hiking has already been exceptional for several months), I wanted to relay the following new post to Dos Hombres regarding restored train service on the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway. The bottom line - train service will soon be fully restored through Carrizo Gorge and safety concerns as well as trespassing issues are noted.

As a reminder, I archived this vintage cache over a year ago to comply with ABDSP policies. Please treat it as "out of play" for future finds. Thanks.

I am the General Manager of the Mexican portion of the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway. We have been working for the past year on the US portion of the line in the Carrizo Gorge to clear tunnel blockages due to fires. We will have the last tunnel cleared by the end of November. We anticipate having work trains passing through the Gorge at any time of the day or night and by next spring, we will have freight train at the rate of four a day in both directions. The rail line in the Gorge has been out of service for the past 20 years and many outdoor-oriented persons have become accustomed to the Gorge being accessible along the railroad since it lies within the State Park. The right of way, however, is not park land and has been posted against trespass but the number of persons hiking into the Gorge now presents a hazard.

I would ask that you place a notice in your Chapter newsletter concerning the renewed rail freight traffic on the line. Our Railroad Police will soon start citing trespassers and we will prosecute criminally and civilly, anyone encountered along the right of way who is there without authorization. The 16 tunnels in the Gorge do not have escape pockets and anyone in the tunnel when a train passes places themselves at great risk.

:D Are you having a Birthday Harmon? I could place a cache for you....

Back when I was a boy nobody had birthdays; especially me.

At my 40th birthday gathering my mother told me the story of my birth.

She and the father I never knew were living in a board-shack that had

cracks wide-enough so that one could see through to the outside. She

birthed me all by herself except for the presence of the thirteen-month

old brother I never knew. I was two-ounces short of a twelve-pound

baby too. My mother said "Your father, the (s.o.b.) was out riding his

motorcycle with another woman when you were borne." Toward evening

my grandmother that I did learn to know came out of Abilene to check

on my mother. No doctor, no hospital, and so no birth certificate.

One of the oil paintings that my mother accomplished in her final years

is of the board shack that I was borne in. I have the painting now and

cherish it of course. I've shown it a few times ... so far viewers merely

fall silent when they see the painting, not sure what to say I suppose

but possibly filled with doubt.

Of late much is being said of the "Great Depression" and comparisons

are being made with regard to the present economic downturn. Not

even close!

Jodi,

You're so kind, how about a birthday hike and hide with some of my

very special pals? After all my hopes for a ride in a sedan chair were

dashed during the Dalmation excursion ... though I must admit that

having you carry my four ammo cans that day was more than I

hoped for.

This is shaping up to be a terrific outing but if Janie pilots the mower

who will peel and pass the grapes and who will operate the ostrich-

feather fan?

I'm all for such an outing but there's one small problem I see. Going

Geocaching with top-of-the heap finders means that there's no place

in the county that y'all haven't cleared. Minor-league finders such as

myself have only one cleared zone, that being where my last find was

if I found it today.

As to the bathroom rehab I'm in a holding pattern until the cabinetry

is delivered December 20th. In the meantime I'm just trying to look

busy by installing doorway and shower-stall moldings. Thanks for

asking by the way.

Wow. Those shots (particularly those taken from the corner of Huggens and Cather) put what happened into better perspective than anything I've seen in the news... You can actually see where the plane hit, that it went right through the house on the corner and ended up in the street on the other side.

A friend at work lives a block away from those houses. His wife went for a morning walk with the lady that lived in that house. A couple of hours later the plane hit her house. That lady had a new baby and a 15 month old child. Her Mom was visiting to help her with the baby. It makes me shudder to think about it. How awful... ;) Edited by TrailGators

There's a whole lot of caches that aren't waterproof that are getting really wet right about now! Most of mine are waterproof, but I do have one in a flood plain that might start floating away. We have it so lucky here where the weather is nearly always dry and suitable for caching that we forget that we do actually have a rainy season occasionally.

This request came in from the Rangers who are working for us to support caching in the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge. Thought I would pass it along...

Thanks for posting this, FlagMan! I just made my first visit to the nature center recently and it would certainly be a shame if it closed down. Lots of great birds and lizards there, ruins of an old gunpowder factory -- plus there's a loggable benchmark with at least 2 visible RMs! I can't make the event but will send a letter to the Chula Vista City Council in case that would help.

At age eleven (1945/46) I earned my call sign W6FTY. Sad to

say that I didn't renwew it in later years. Way back then much

of the WWII military surplus was donated to schools and my

shop teacher gave me a receiver and transmitter intended for

B-17 flying superfortresses. Once my buddies and I used the

40-meter ham band to remotely detonate a small keg of black

powder and so blow a medium-sized sycamore tree that grew

on then desolate Kearney Mesa to smithereens. Eleven was a

good year for me, two years before my dad started sending

me away to summer jobs each and every year until I was seven-

teen; then he sent me away to another string of jobs that lasted

until three years ago. Dah-di-dah-dit Dah-dah-di-dah!

Wait a minute ... what was the quesrion?

Mario, a geocacher from North Carolina, is visiting in Temecula during the holidays and contacted me via the SDGeocachers Photo Gallery. He is asking if anyone in Temecula can help him identify some of the better caches to drop off some TBs he carried out here from his friends in NC. His note is below. Anybody in the Temecula area interested?

You can contact Mario via GC.com or email me for his regular email address. I don't want to put it here and expose it to spammers ;)

Happy Holidays to the San Diego Geocachers!

====================

Heya, M2!

I'm fairly new to the geocaching hobby and visiting family in Temecula. I came out from Raleigh, North Carolina and when the crew there heard I was headed this way, I got loaded down with 6 travel bugs to distribute in this area.

Now, I can find a few easy ones around here and drop 'em off, but I thought it'd be fun to meet a local geocacher and get their opinion as to where the best drop-offs might be (based on the travel bugs' individual goals). I found the sdgeocachers.org website but could only find your contact info, so... here I am. :D

Do you happen to know any friendly geocachers in Temecula who might still be around for the holidays and would have some extra time to chat on the phone or meet up?

Thanks for your time!

A friend of my son was doing some auto repair on someones car in Alpine yesterday, although I don't know the specific area. He had brought along his dog, a pit bull. He left the dog at the house while going to get some parts and when he returned, found out that his dog had been attacked by a mountain lion and was very seriously wounded. A broken back, one of his rear legs dangling and the dogs face tore up very badly. He had to euthanize the dog. For those of you doing any caching in the Alpine area, please keep your dogs leashed and be very aware of your surroundings. If I find out the specific area then I will post more. You won't see this story in the newspaper or on your TV news. I know that pit bulls certainly have a bad reputation but I met this particular dog and it was a loving dog that my grandchild were even allowed to be around.

I can make some recommendations on caches that are big enough for bugs. They are getting harder to find since most of the new caches seem to be nanos and micros, but many older caches will work. We are, I'm afraid, too busy with family issues and the usual holiday junk to be available to help, either personally or by phone, but if you are looking for likely candidates, I'd suggest:

GCPMCF - Full Spectrum, a large and somewhat unusual cache.

GC18KYH, Gung Hay Fat Choy, ammo can in a pretty pond park

GC1JWYR, Bedrock TB Cafe, regular container iwth nice camo near the road

GC1JD4X SD County Line TB Hotel, ammo can close to freeway

GC1AGVC, Pam's Betty Boop Cache, ammo can with nice views of the valley on the way up

GC1JJDT, Silver Hawk Pass, ammo can and short hike

GC1JJDB, Silver Hawk Creak, ammo can with short hike

You can PM me for my cell number and I can be available if you get stuck on any cache, as long as my feeble memory can recall it.

OMG ;) ~ That is so sad and scary!

We're curious to find out where exactly it was, hopefully it was out in the backcountry section of Alpine somewhere. Wabbits must be getting scare 'out' there and most cachers let their dogs run on the trails.

I'm sorry to hear about the poor dog. I heard a report that in another part of the country a cougar jumped over a wall and attacked and carried a rotweiler back over the wall.

Almost any of the rural areas of the county and even suburban ones are places where cougars might and do roam.

I worry about some of our geocachers who roam alone out in these areas. I remember I was on duty at Cuyamaca when a woman was attacked and killed by a cougar. These are very powerful animals and can really rip you up quickly. Some things to remember: Hike in a group if at all possible. Children are great attractions for a hungry cat, so keep them close to you. Carry a hiking stick. I also carry pepper spray, the bear variety which will spray 30 feet. REI carries it. Keep a constant look behind you when hiking. The cougar will come from behind to attack. If confronted by one face it and pretend to be big. Lift your arms, etc. Don't bend over to pick up a rock. If you do that's when they might charge. Better, already have a rock or two in your pocket. You can yell at them but don't use a high pitched scream. Back away from it while still facing it. Absolutely don't run. If you do they'll overtake you. There are pamphlets in the parks about cougars that you can pick up. Please be careful out there. :(

I know that pit bulls certainly have a bad reputation but I met this particular dog and it was a loving dog that my grandchild were even allowed to be around.

OMG :( ~ That is so sad and scary!

We're curious to find out where exactly it was, hopefully it was out in the backcountry section of Alpine somewhere. Wabbits must be getting scare 'out' there and most cachers let their dogs run on the trails.

Keep an eye out!

The Splashes

I talked to the owner of the dog and he told me it was up off Victoria up the hill north a few miles but that there are houses in the area. The dog was an 85 lb. Pit bull that was attacked when the Cougar jumped out of a tree within 100 feet of a house while his dog played with other dogs. He happened to be the unlucky one. From what he told me, the people in the area are aware of this cougar in the area and it had attacked another dog previously. I hated to hear that his dog was killed but I would be just as sad if they had to kill the mountain lion. It would be nice if it could be trapped and moved to a more remote area.
