+geospyder
Jodi just reported that Channel 8 is currently in our neighborhood 16:45 and there are hot spots all around, but it looks like all the houses they are panning the camera by (15 of the 25 up there) are still intact. +TFTC
Just got home from work in Encinitas and there is a mandatory evaction from Olivehain, so hope TFTC place is going to be ok. The fire is just west of the Bridges country club. Forget our house! Let's just hope they can protect our caches! We're ok - keeping our fingers crossed for our house! We evac'd to a house in La Costa where we we were living when we had to evac from the fires there a few years back. Seems like a ritual price we have to pay for all the great things we enjoy by living here. We're back home - phew. Quote Link to comment

If you teach him to program, he'll be frustrated for a lifetime" part... This is the quick and dirty, brute force method. There is probably a more elegant but it's late, I'm tired and this worked... 1. Save the polygon as a .KML file. 2. Open up the .KML file in a text editor and strip out all the XML goo (in other words, just leave the list of coordinates) 3. Search and replace to convert "0 -11" to 0<cr>-11" (this puts everything into comma delimited columns. <cr> means "carriage return") 4. Save this as a .CSV file. 5. Open up the .CSV file in Excel 6. Delete the altitude column (third column that is all 0s) 7. Swap the longitude and latitude columns 8. Save as a comma delimited file (.CSV), but use a .TXT file extension. 9. Parsa
Sorry to say this, but parts of Encinitas and Carlsbad are now under voluntary evacuation. The I-5 and Amtrak are closed since one of the Pendleton fires is at the freeway now. A CHP fire report is for Harbor Drive at the I-5, but I think it's north of Las Pulgas...? De Luz is being evacuated from one of the fires. Bonsall, San Luis Rey Heights and Winterwarm on the north side of Highway 76 are being evacuated. Fallbrook was re-evacuated around midnight. Birch Hill, the area near the store on Palomar, is being evacuated. The Poomacha fire is straddling state Route 76 just south of Palomar Mountain. The road is closed in both directions. The flames were about a mile away from the Witch fire and fire officials expect the two fires may have already converged. From the UT: "Citing dangerous weather conditions and poor air quality, San Diego City Attorney Michael Aguirre this week advocated a voluntary evacuation of the nation's eighth-largest city. In separate interviews with The San Diego Union-Tribune yesterday, the police chief, fire chief and mayor's office said Aguirre urged them to consider such an exodus after the wildfires began Sunday. A spokesman for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said the administration also was aware of the request. Everybody agreed it was a bad idea." He's a real smart guy, isn't he? Parsa Quote Link to comment

+duganrm
Time for your weekly shower now Richard...... Water pressure is fairly low so I don't know if I would want to do that quite yet. I found out from some neighbors last night that someone had physically gone door to door and turned the water main off at each house and then water mains to the areas. We turned our main back on at about 10 last night and got enough water pressure for necessities. We wandered through the ghost town of Ramona last night and found that there were quite a few people that did not evacuate. We found Stater Brothers open for groceries. We found Stars, Circle K, and Daniels all open for gas. We found the Cheers, Subway, and the Turkey Inn open for food and drink. And we noticed at least one feed store open for food for the animals. We were actually suprised and thankful this many places had enough employees still in the area so that they could stay open. Quote Link to comment

+The Senior Sleuths
At the risk of sounding morbid, insensitive and uncaring, here is a link to a Google Earth map, that will show both the fire areas, and the caches in them (assuming you automatically load your caches kml too. Click on the KPBS link and "open in Google Earth". Interestingly, the "San Miguel Ranch Evacuation" is linked to an rural airstrip 40 miles east of Las Vegas, New Mexico! (This fire is much more widespread than I thought! ) Been thinking about all those caches around Blue Sky, Lake Poway, Woodson, Lake Hodges etc.) Assuming that they survived, maybe it'll be easier to get to Mont Saint Michel and Old Glory now... Speaking of Lake Hodges caches, anyone heard from Senior Sleuths? Senior Sleuths checking in. We returned last night from being back east. We hear our home is still there, but it was a very close call. We hear it burned to our property line, but the winds were blowing west and we were east. As for most of my caches, I think they are toast. Our house is just below "A Piece of Cake". We will be at our daughters in Clairemont until they let us come into the area. Quote Link to comment

A neighbor who bullied his way back into our area to his house is currently going over to ours to put out a couple of "smoldering" areas... The fire trucks aren't there right now.... Once you guys find out that your house is alright then I just bought a bunch of rolls of Black electric tape so we can rehide out Sweetwater area caches. Quote Link to comment
+LeoGeo
Confirm or deny? I was told that Channel 10 had reported, around noon or 1:00 pm, that there was a new fire in Rancho Bernardo. I had been listening to KPBS and KOGO and had heard nothing about this, nor can I find it on any TV station's website, and, in fact, I've been hearing that people are being allowed back into RB, Penasquitos, etc., which presumably wouldn't be happening if there was a new fire there. Did anyone else hear any such report? Quote Link to comment
+Team Adelos
Sorry if the news on Encinitas and Carlsbad was a false alarm, but they did announce it on the news early this morning, perhaps due to Rancho Santa Fe fires. All that area seems to be under control now I think. They arrested several illegals at Qualcomm just now. They admitted they were being paid to go into Qualcomm over the last couple days and take free stuff out, stuff that was for use at Qualcomm, not off site. Someone in Mira Mesa was paying them to steal the stuff. Parsa Ah, free enterprise at its finest! Incredible! Quote Link to comment

Did anyone else hear any such report? The nursing home where I work took in some residents from a Rancho Bernardo nursing home and we are sending them back to the Remington Club of Rancho Bernardo so I am assuming that the area is safe. +"lostguy"
Has anyone heard from Miragee. I see that she hasn't logged onto the website since 10/21. Hopefully all is well. Quote Link to comment
+Let's Look Over Thayer
We also have tried calling our answering machine....... It has been a busy tone for two days. So it can give a false indiction of something worse then it is. All too true. During the 2000 Cerro Grande fire (Los Alamos, NM), we had been calling the house of a friend of ours. This house was on a canyon surrounded by ponderosa and would have been the first in that part of town to go. Just about the time that we figured that the fire was going to get there, the answering machine stopped responding and we figured the house was gone. Fortunately, it was just that the power had gone out. Quote Link to comment
Parsa
Our electricity has been going on and off. We are not running the AC, but I noticed it in the guest bathroom that has no windows. The person from San Onofre NGS said that ash from the fire was hitting the insulators on the main distribution lines near the Marine Base, and that they had shut down some lines and had fluctuating behavior on the remainder. She said they might have to shut down the final line and that San Diego would have to rely on our few fossil fuel generators for power. Quote Link to comment

According to this source, a major part of RB is open again. Quote Link to comment
+Snake & Rooster
I always imagine, though, the following scene. The place is barren wasteland. Nothing but rubble, chimneys, jumbles of plumbing, and melted appliances covered in ash. And in the center of it all is an charred telephone table with an unscathed answering machine: "I am sorry. We are unable to come to phone right now. Please leave your message at the sound of the beep..." We also have tried calling our answering machine....... It has been a busy tone for two days. Personally, I think that any cache that burned should be archived, not replaced. Then, put a new one out for us to find. It will also help keep that pinko commie rat, Marko busy. +Marko Ramius
... It will also help keep that pinko commie rat, Marko busy. Why I oughta! Do rats have long memories? If you had ever actually seen me (which I am quite certain that none of you have), you would know that I much more resemble the elephant than the rat... Quote Link to comment

That explains this photo of some cachers trying to get their caches approved... Quote Link to comment
