Does anyone know how to make the background image on a cache page just one image instead of a bunch of the same image? Groundspeak didn't know and said I should ask my welll informed caching community. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask.

Hmm, don't really know but I suspect it has to do with size and/or aspect-ratio of the image you reference in the New Cache Listing form. If size and/or aspect-ratio isn't ideal perhaps the image is tiled to fill the background.

I'll watch to see if you get a knowledgeable answer; if not, I'll spend some time to figure out how it's done and post my finding.

Harmon

I'm sure this is correct, but I have no idea how to size the image correctly to make it a single image...

I cannot swear to this, but I think at one time you had a choice of making it tiles or a single stretched image. Some software iteration later, that disappeared. Of couse . . . I am old and forgetful, and may be completely mistaken.

The Win desktop lets you do that but not HTML...

My recollection is that HTML just tiles whatever image you supply to fill the browser window. So, the only way that I know of to prevent tiling is to make the image larger than any reasonable browser window and it won't tile.

If you own the entire webpage (which you don't for cache pages) you can set up a style sheet where the background image can be set to "no-repeat".

My guess exactly.

I checked an example cache page that features a tiled image,

three across and seven down tiled from a 448x326 source

image. That turns out to be 1344 across and 2282 down and so

1920x2560 would be the next-largest common image size. Not

sure if the source image was presized or not.

Anyway try it with the source image sized to 1920x2560 pixels.

Let us know how it turns out.

Harmon

Who's got a monitor that darn good? I'm still using a monitor with lowly 1280x1024 resolution.

I think the site scales all images per this rule:

"If your original image is under 125k or 600 pixels wide, the largest image will not be resized."

Pat,

I'm guessing that the posted-image resizing to 600 pixels wide

doesn't apply to cache-page background images. Like on the

Forum one can provide a link to a large image and it doesn't

get resized like uploaded Forum images.

Pat,

Looks like I got it right. Thought I should settle this issue by conduct-

ing an experiment so I used one of my inactive cache pages for the

test.

First I uploaded a 1920x2560 image onto my Cox.net personal web

space and saved the URL for the uploaded image. Then I went to

my account on Geocaching.com and did an edit on the cache page

by pasting the saved URL into the Background-image URL entry box.

Result looks like this -

Full-size background image.

As you can see the backgound image is full size and not even scaled

down nor tiled to fit; that is, not all of the background images shows.

My impression is that proper fit would call for the image size I calculated

in an earlier post. Because the image was never loaded onto a Geocaching

server there was no chance they could downsize it without saving their own

local copy.

I've used this same approach to display very-large panoramic images

on Forum threads.

Ta-da!

Harmon

p.s. lulu499, you answer at last and note that Splashette was the talent for

the experiment.

Harmon, all I see is the normal green background when I click on that link....

I can see the background photo, and it is full-screen. I must confess, however, I've never really understood why someone would put a picture on the background (except maybe puzzle). I've never been able to figure out how to view it unless it was listed on the cache page as part of the gallery. What exactly is the point? Please enlighten me.

For me it is just that lulu499 asked how it can be done.

I'm with you about the need for background images

except maybe, as you said, for a puzzle-cache. Also

maybe because you can.

Pat, ain't that odd that you don't see the background

image? Two out of three ain't bad I suppose.

I thought it was odd so I went back and left the page open for about 30 seconds and it finally showed up. I guess my connection at work isn't very fast sometimes. Anyhow, thanks for the info! Edited by TrailGators

Thank you to Harmon, Splashette and everyone else who responded to my question. I was hoping you were going to tell me to check or uncheck a box somewhere, but I guess it's a little more involved than that.

I did learn from all of this that by using a larger image I would have 40 tiles instead of 150+, so the background image looks much better.

Snake, a background image on a traditional cache page isn't really necessary, but for me it helps tie things together. I agree, though, that the image should be included in the gallery. I'll have to start doing that.

Thanks again to everyone that contributed!

Da nada Pat.

Actually I've had a good week responding to three

separate appeals for Geocaching technical support.

Kind of breaks up my routine of looking after my

sweet-bride's recovery. She's doing well by the way.

It only took about 3 seconds to load that background image at home. Glad to hear that your sweet bride is doing well!

I am with S&R on this one....

Unless an image is tiled, you cannot see most of it because of the main cache page. It is just the edges that can be seen. I don't really see the point.

Minorities

We need to show more sympathy for these people.

* They travel miles in the heat.

* They risk their lives crossing a border.

* They don't get paid enough wages.

* They do jobs that others won't do or are afraid to do.

* They live in crowded conditions among a people who speak a different Language.

* They rarely see their families, and they face adversity all day ~ Every day.

I'm not talking about illegal Mexicans ~ I'm talking about our troops! Doesn't it seem strange that many Democrats and Republicans are willing to Lavish all kinds of social benefits on illegals, but don't support ourTroops, and are even threatening to defund them? 0002014F.gif

Thanks, the picture turned out pretty good. The GW6 page has so many pictures its hard to find the one you want.

San Diego actually had a bigger contingent then what's represented in this picture, we just couldn't all get together at the same time. I saw another group shot somewhere of the SoCal Geocachers that included some of the other San Diego Geocachers.

Here's the other picture.

What does the rest of that sheet on the left say....

Something about $43 on e-bay, and something about donated to....our border?????

And how can I get one now?

I got one just for you, Sean. I'll give it to you when your coins come in...

It's blurry because Geocachers can't set still that long.

Well, since the newest SD geodog is saying hello I thought I had better say goodbye.

Thats right, my family and I are leaving San Diego, we are moving to Oklahoma City. Some of you (especially those in the south bay) may have noticed I have not been caching much the last month or so. Partly due to a new baby, somewhat due to finals at school, but mostly because of preparing for this move which is happening in 2 weeks.

So I just want to say thanks for all the fun caches, awesome adventures and great friends!

Just a quick note that I just archived most of my GC's (too many to manage). Sorry for any inconvenience in advance. I had a blast with them and will pick up containers as soon as I can.

Travelita--I just noticed that and was meaning to ask you why! Such a shame, so many of them were in really beautiful locations around Mission Bay. I was working my way through getting them but hadn't finished. I can understand about there being too many to manage, but it doesn't look like you kept many active at all...

So why archive all but one?? why delete all your personal finds???? Didn't she do this before. Why put them out if your going to archive them ??? 0002014F.gif I did a few of hers last weekend and the logs still had plenty of room, so what is there to manage. 000201DD.gif Doesn't make much sense.?????

Help! We have a travelbug trapped in one of Travelita's archived caches (GC154QJ - Spigot Camp). We tried emailing her, but received no response. Anybody up for a rescue mission? The TB's name is Wimpy.
