Well we're big number finders

We don’t wear blinders

And we get FTFs everywhere we go

We cache for beauty

And we cache for truth

And we solve lots of puzzles, don’cha know

We swap lots of WG$ billls

To give us all kinds of thrills

But the thrill we've never known

Is the thrill that will get ya

When you get your picture

On the cover of the Rolling Stone

chorus:

Going to see my picture on the cover

Gonna buy five copies for my mother

Gonna see my smiling face

We got a lot of little

Teen age blue eyed groupies

Who'd do anything we'd say

We got a genuine Indian guru

He's teaching us a better way

We got all the geocoins that money can buy

So we never have to be alone

And we keep getting richer

But we can't get our picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone

Abbott and Costello 'How to buy a computer'

You have to be old enough to remember Abbott and Costello, and too old

To REALLY understand computers, to fully appreciate this. For those of

Us who sometimes get flustered by our computers, please read on...

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their famous sketch,

"Who's on First?" might have turned out something like this:

COSTELLO CALLS TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM ABBOTT.

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: Thanks. I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm thinking

About buying a computer.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.

ABBOTT: Your computer?

COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.

ABBOTT: What about Windows?

COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?

ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?

COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look at the windows?

ABBOTT: Wallpaper.

COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.

ABBOTT: Software for Windows?

COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write

Proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?

ABBOTT: I just did.

COSTELLO: You just did what?

ABBOTT: Recommend something.

COSTELLO: You recommended something?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: For my office?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!

ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.

COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let's just say I'm

Sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I need?

ABBOTT: Word.

COSTELLO: What word?

ABBOTT: Word in Office.

COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.

ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?

ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue "W".

COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue "w" if you don't start with some

Straight answers. What about financial bookkeeping? You have anything I

Can track my money with?

ABBOT T: Money.

COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?

ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.

COSTELLO: What's bundled with my computer?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?

ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.

COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?

ABBOTT: One copy.

COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?

ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.

COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?

ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!

(A few days later.)

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?

ABBOTT: Click on "START".............

I'd like to check it out but the site seems to have gotten real slow all of a sudden. I wonder if they just rolled out some new hip, slick and cool feature that is dragging the site down to it's knees...

Regarding the bue doohickey, all that I have been able to determine, so far, is that you can drag it all over the map and if you place it over a cache and double click it, a blue doohickey will attach itself to the cache.

It will also give you a proximity radius. Hopefully, at some point, it will also show the actual coords of its location so that it can be used as a tool for scoping out potential cache hiding places...

They must be testing, but the map is back to normal. The one I saw allowed you to see a much bigger map with options to remove types of caches as well as finds and owned caches. It was pretty cool. I love that they always improve the site. I can't wait for it to come back into production.

This is a list of locations where certain entities are testing GPS receivers/jammers(?), etc. which might experience local GPS interference as a result. Rancho Bernardo is listed as having potential GPS interference from now until July '08. Coords put the source as here:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...p;z=15&om=1

That's General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, which makes sense. Their UAV's rely heavily on GPS. I didn't do the math, but at ground level the area of effect is about 8NM radius from this location.

So, now I have a valid excuse for any local DNF's!

Ooooh! That's right where the scary monolith building is... :D I knew I had a reason to be afraid of it...

If the interferer is at ground level, then the actual area of effect on the ground will probably be less than 8NM due to terrain blocking (at least in some cases...) On the other hand, I'm going to claim that there are terrain effects that must be boosting the intereference to 50NM or so (perhaps the scary building is acting as an amplifier...) The only other explanation would be my incompetance -- and that clearly isn't the problem...

As it happened, it was while I was searching for this "?" cache that I first noticed the scary building.

Fortunately, I had had the foresight not to bring the coordinates with me, so that the scary monolith building could not possibly screw up my GPSr. (It had nothing to do with the fact that I couldn't solve the puzzle...really! )

Incidentally, it's going to be pretty hard to exceed the diabolicality of TT's latest puzzle...my suggestion for solving it would be to stand next to the scary monolith building for eight hours. With luck, enough of whatever is inside that building will leak out and warp your mind sufficiently that you can figure it out...

Geocaching in the news...

My sister mentioned the following had happened in Austin:

There was a lady's body found today on the campus. As I was watching

KXAN tonight, 10 PM newscast, I noticed what appeared to be an ammo can

with "geocache" written on it in black magic marker. Anyone know

anything about this?

Jason

Princegussy and the Texas Waddles

It turns out that the cache in question is: Texas Travel Bug University, Part Deux I was thinking of finding that cache two weeks ago when I was in Austin, but ran out of time. The logs make for interesting reading.

Not yet clear what happened to the woman (foul play, accident, allergic reaction to ammo cans?)

They don't know too much about what happened but they show the ammo can that clearly says Geocache on the side of it in one of the videos.

Rather odd shot, actually. It was probably one those shots that the cameraman took just wandering around..."Oh, look, here's some crime scene tape lying next to an ammocan. That's interesting. I'll shoot it..." and then the editor, trying to put together enough video for the voiceover said "Oh, there's a shot that's a little different than the rest. I'll splice it in..."

They've released the identity of the woman. A missing person report was filed in the 6th. Someone visited the cache to drop off a TB on the 7th and apparently did not notice any bodies lying around near the cache...) Kind of wonder what happened...

The new maps are back and they are looking great.

Just so you guys know what's going on, there's a major release that GC.com has been working on, and they have been testing it during non-peak times for many months now. There's a thread on this somewhere that you can find if you look for it. So when you see the new maps come and go, it is just the lackeys switching between the new release and the regular site. At some point (hopefully soon) the new release will become permanent...

True, but I was hoping for actual & local results instead of manufacturer's propaganda.

I first heard of this kind of flooring on one of "those" tv shows (diy type). It sounded like something we'd want. Long lasting, warmer & not as hard as tile. It's also "green!" :D

Has anyone had cork flooring installed? We're going to get it installed but we're not quite sure what brand/quality to use or who to have install it. We don't want to be anybody's guinea pigs!

:D;)

I've never heard of cork floors but after Googling a bit and reading about them, they sound pretty cool. There is a ton of info on the net. That's where I would look... :yikes:

True, but I was hoping for actual & local results instead of manufacturer's propaganda.

I first heard of this kind of flooring on one of "those" tv shows (diy type). It sounded like something we'd want. Long lasting, warmer & not as hard as tile. It's also "green!" :D

You can read customer/expert reviews online too. Here is one.

Since corks vary from brand to brand wouldn't you

get sick of too much of the same kind of wine?

True. How much wine can you drink without ending up on the floor? ;) Edited by TrailGators

I've just reactivated Yrium's White Elephant Cache in Mission Valley. If you have not found this cache . . . or if you have not found it for many years . . . Please come by and enjoy the pure fun and joy of Geocaching that was Yrium.

I replaced the cache with a truly impressive rocket box that will hold your bigger than average chachkas!

Thanks . . . I'm pretty sure it will make Yrium smile!

I had to reread this twice...

You see, if you take a river trip down the Grand Canyon, you cannot leave anything in the canyon. Everything has to be packed out including human waste. 20mm rocket boxes seal up nice and tight and keep everything inside until you get back. Nowadays, you can even get toilet seats that fit right on top and liners that fit right down inside for the ultimate in comfort and convenience.

So when I read about a "truly impressive rocket box" holding "bigger than average chachkas", a geocache was not the first thing that came to mind... :yikes:;);)

Just wanted to put a plug in for The San Diego County "Historic" Cache Adventure. This should be a rite of passage for all serious SD Cachers. The 30+5 caches listed on this cache page are all excellent examples of the early style of caching. Anyone who has visited all these sites will have experienced some of the best trails in the County. These are simply some of the better caches around and worthy of the "Adventure." Hope alot of you all out there take up the challenge!

I love doing the older caches. I've done 20 of the 30 already and I look forward to doing the others too.

It should be noted, too, that these are not your flash-in-the-pan, AGL, 12 weeks-and-archived urban micros. These caches have survived six years in the wild (sometimes with the occasional assistance of cache samaritans...) Each is special in its own right. I wasn't caching in those early years but I am most thankful that I can still experience the sport "as it was in the day".

Like Trailgators, I've got about ten to go (all of them out east -- looks like the geomobile is going to get some mileage...) My next caching goal after finding 3000 caches (almost there!) will be to complete "The Adventure" by year end...see you on the trail!

A definate must-do cache; today I was lucky enough to knock-out another six on the list on a "historic" caching day with Miragee. Zipping all around from cache to cache with the goal to see how many we could get in a day! Still have quite a few more to do, but getting closer to finishing it.

This rocket box has made a few river trips and spent a number of years in the back of my jeep. I have another that has served latrine duty but I thought it best not to use it for the cache! ;)
