For those you who are really into stats/numbers I ran across this cool little program

http://www.fizzymagic.net/Geocaching/FindStats/index.html

Quote:

"FindStats is a utility that performs some simple statistical analysis of geocaches in a GPX file. It was originally meant for analysis of the "My Finds" Pocket Query, but it works on any GPX file.

FindStats calculates the average difficulty, terrain, and "challenge" ratings for caches in a file, along with determining the number of countries and US states represented by the caches in the file."

This is what is spit out for me:

Very cool! Here's mine:

Doh, I tried to process all the caches in greater San Diego but the program blew up... :D Too bad, I thought that would be interesting.

On Edit: It doesn't seem to like GSAK-generated gpx files :)

Speaking of Palm Springs - This Stat brings back memories for Trailgators, Flagman and I!  :D

That was fun! :)

I also noticed that we both have the same oldest cache too: GC140! But I didn't understand why it was #320....shouldn't it be #140?

140 Hex is 320 Decimal

I figured that out after looking at the oldest cache names. I thought the first ones were Base 10 and then they switched to Base 36. But the first ones were Base 16 and then they switched to Base 36.

Bikedog down.

I am extremely sad to report that Bikedog was critically injured in a motorcycle accident today and will not live through the night. For all of you who had the opportunity to know him, then your life is better for it. I personally had the chance to share many a weekend adventure with him and I will always remember him for the fun we had and the challenges we overcame.

I will repost once the details of a memorial service are assembled.

Good gosh, I must have been at the hospital when he was brought in. Of course I cannot confirm that the following information pertains to Bikedog and so please know that the following comments are mere speculation.

The reason I was at Scripps Memorial hospital was that my sweet bride and I took my ninety-two year old dad into the emergency/trauma unit this morning. We arrived at about 9:00 p.m. and stayed until my dad was taken to a room upstairs at about 7:00 p.m. We spent the entire day in the emergeny unit because, in part, the Scripps staff were preoccupied with an injured man that was brought in by helicopter.

We sat in the emergency-unit waiting room beside a group of concerned family members and saw more of them arrive in a state of extreme anguish. We also saw the Scripps helicopter arrive with a man that they took straight-away into the trauma unit. We saw that some of the patient's clothing was torn away.

As time went on we overheard a remark that the attending neurosurgeons didn't expect the patient to live and of course heard reactions from disdraught family members.

It was a very sad and emotional scene. The Scripps staff were working diligently to pull him through.

Harmon, you are correct. He was life flighted to Scripps La Jolla and was in the ER/Trauma room most of the day. He never regained consciousness. Between friends and family he had a throng of supporters by his bedside, in the lobby, and the ICU visitors lounge. The only good in this is that it was over in a blink of the eye, no pain, and he went out doing one of things he loved doing the most.

Escondido man killed in crash

By: Associated Press

RANCHO SANTA FE ---- A 44-year-old Escondido man was killed Thursday when he crashed his motorcycle into a sport utility vehicle that turned in front of him, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The crash happened at 8:35 a.m. on Lago Lindo, CHP Officer Tom Kerns said.

Jerry Gradisher was driving his 2003 Suzuki 400 motorcycle eastbound on Lago Lindo at an unknown speed, Kerns said.

Another motorist, Kelsey Shaner, 27, of San Diego was driving extremely slowly in his 2003 Nissan Xterra going west on Lago Lindo because he was looking for an address, Kerns said.

Shaner turned left in front of Gradisher, who was was unable to avoid the collision, Kerns said. Gradisher was thrown from his motorcycle and suffered severe injuries, he said.

Gradisher was taken by Mercy Air ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla where he later died of his injuries. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Gradisher, a medical examiner's investigator said.

I noticed the article listed he is survived by his wife.

In his profile, I saw some pictures of children. Does anyone know if Jerry had kids? The reason I am asking is I was contacted yesterday by one of the coin manufacturers. They are sending me 2 samples of their new coin, that are not numbered, and limited to 5 or 6 made. They asked me to auction 1 of them to a charity of my choice, and keep the other.

I have found a Bikedog smashed penny, and I know he competed in the coin quest. I want to auction off the coin to benefit his family, but I just wanted to get some more info for the listing.

His friends and family will continue to be in our prayers.

This is such a tragic loss. Our hearts go out to those that Jerry left behind.

I was about ready to place my first cache here in Colorado and I have decided to make it a memorial cache for our geocaching friend Bikedog. I will post a link once it is online so when you SD folks come to visit here, you can do the cache. RM

Perhaps this should get posted on the general discussion board in case there's anyone who knew him.

Sad news indeed. Perhaps we can learn something from this tragedy. The gentleman who hit Bikedog was going slowly, looking for an address, turned in from of him. Does this sound familiar? Can't tell you the number of times I have been distracted by the GPSr, looking for the access to a cache. Lets all be more careful while on the hunt,,,,in memory of Bikedog.

Some of you may or may not have seen bikedog's smashed pennies that he began placing into caches. Based on my communications with him he was very passionate about it and couldn't wait to begin placing them into caches. Below is a link to a video compilation that Jerry sent me awhile back showing his true passion for geocaching and creating one of his signature items.

Jerry said:

"This is a day in the life of an elongated coin. Sure, I know, not as flashy as a geocoin. Not as heavy, nor expensive, either. It's small enough that even those dadgum urban micro's still get a donation. I've stamped a unique tracking number into the first batch. Follow its travels with Google Earth maps."

So often in our logs, we will write something like "If it weren't for this cache, I never would have known about this place...". This morning, as I read the sad news, I realized that geocaching had brought me to a very unexpected place. I found myself caring, on a deeply personal level, for someone whom I have never met, except through the media of a plastic jar left under a bush, a smashed penny and words in a log. It's rather funny how such small things can create such a connection.

Our deepest sympathies go to Bikedog's family and friends.

As a long time rider I can't count the number times I've had people turn in front of me, pull out in front of me, or try and move into my lane of traffic, I was even rear ended one time on Ingraham st which isn't any fun at 35 miles an hour. for some reason bikes whether they be pedal or motor people just don't see us. They will look right at us and you wonder if they even see you. So PLEASE PLEASE see us

We are so sorry to hear this. It's always difficult when one of our own goes down.

He and his family will be in our thoughts and prayers.
