When my sister (& family) moved to RI, the locals acted like they were still riding in buggies. If they went 30 miles away from home they packed an overnight bag. So for you to go to another state, WOW!. B) Better pack for a week! B)

Well, I'm used to driving from SD to Tucson the 5+ hours every so often. So thinking about it in those terms, 5+ hours from Central NJ would get me through....oh probably 6-9 states plus DC. (assuming traffic is nice).

 

BTW, can someone please explain to me the legality of states collecting on imposed Toll roads that are levied on roads that are part of the federal Interstate system? (i.e the NY Thruway and the Mass Pike). It seems to me that my federal tax dollars are supposed to pay for the Interstate system, yet I'm getting levied another fee from the state? Isn't this a case of double taxation??? Tom? You wanna clue me in on this. What in God's name is it that makes this a Northeast phenomenon?

 

I get the toll bridges concept. I accept that there is a convenience factor. But Toll roads??? When there is no other way to go? WTF?!? </rant>

First, wait for a new cache to be approved. Then RUSH (and I mean RUSH) to get there before anyone else can. Then hide in the bushes and jump out as cegrube, Chuy, Duscwe. D-Jollymon, Gobolt, John&Jess, Night Hunter, Passingwind, etc. (listed in alpha order, not necessarily order of appearance) each converge on the cache seconds apart from each other. Chances are you will fail to arrive before all of them, but now that TT has left town, you might have a fighting chance of meeting one or two of them!..... ;)

 

Of course, if the cache is located in Santee, you'll also have a chance to meet Army_SGM, team fatman and Skillet.

Welcome lokidog and ditto what John & Jess said. I'll probably be putting together a pizza party in September (with help from John & Jess :D ) The last pizza event there were about 120 people, every one of them friendly and outgoing. You will have no trouble being sucked in to this great hobby!

A. Attend the next north-county pizza party. Buy pizza for everybody.

 

B. Add the handles $kimmer and Splashman (Splashette) to your watch list.

 

C. Place a new cache but camp out by it to meet the rush of FTF addicts. That will take about thirty minutes max'.

 

D. Set bear traps near your new cache so's the FTF addicts have to stick around long enough for meaningful conversation.

 

Tip: By leaving the FTF addicts caught in the bear traps you are sure to improve your FTF statistic in the long run.

 

E. Put some danged photos on your profile page and in your profile gallery. Hee, hee, hee.

 

F. O yeah, buy a new high-resolution digital camera and pay attention to lighting conditions.

A very good start! I'm sure you'll come across other cachers while out on the hunt, it happens quite a lot round here, and we're a merry bunch. As lots of people have mentioned, going to a brand new cache is a surefire way to meet lots of folks as they rush to get there first (FTF=first to find, an extra thing to brag about ;) ). Event caches, like the Pizza Party some people have mentioned, are also an excellent way to get to know people, so keep an eye out for them - local ones will be posted in here as well as having a proper cache page. Other than that, if you're planning to visit a particular cache at a particular time, just post a note on this thread and see if anyone wants to join you.

It will be a Saturday evening. That seems to work best in terms of not a school night and no rush hour traffic to contend with.

 

And Harmon, my dear, I can't make pineapple upside-down cake for 120! :D

TT that puzzle cache was a great Swan Song! Great job!

 

As far as toll roads: Illinois had the same deal by turning I90 (and other interstates) into toll roads. This approach let's the Feds (us) off the hook for much of the burden for maintaining these local highways.

 

The I90 tollroad made quite a mess for those that had to commute into Chicago! However, the Illinois toll roads collect billions each year. So the Illinois state income tax was only 2-3%! So it all works out! After all, the taxman will get you one way or the other! So it really depends on which taxman that you vote into office! But those quasi-socialists that vote in Mega-Taxman have no right to bitch! ;) I still favor the "if you want it, then you pay for it, tax system"!

I'm sellin' my children off and I've got takers for most of them, but need a few takers for the "less desireable" ones. Anyone interested in adopting any of the following caches of mine:

I'm sellin' my children off and I've got takers for most of them, but need a few takers for the "less desireable" ones. Anyone interested in adopting any of the following caches of mine:

TT,

So what's so different between paying to cross a bridge (Coronado) & paying to drive down on a more solid road? Our tax money paid for both. And think how much we spend on salary, retirement, medical, etc for the toll takers! And, of course, they don't get minimum wage to sit on their butts all day doing such a simple job. :lol:

Dak girl's Harry Potter caches at UCSD, both the large multi that takes you all around the campus and the Forbidden Forest. :)

 

The Sandy Creek Cowboy caches. You'll have to save up your money for a while to pay for the gas :) since it is out I8 a ways. Don't forget your ladder! :D Either that, or a trampoline. Unless you're like TT & is part Spiderman.

So TT, you should have no trouble clearing out Delaware!

When I was 18-20, we all used to to go to Dewey Beach in Delaware because it was the only beach that would allow us to drink beer on the beach!

The drinking age was 18 back then. Anyhow, I had some good times out there!

Don't forget to go to Dover. You have several sights to see there. Dover Downs for racing. Dover AFB, if you like to see C-5's & other such planes. Its also where a lot of our GI's head to/from overseas. And if you're in a morbid mood, it's where our GI's that are horizontal come back to the US. Dover has the only mortuary in the military in the US. :)

Any suggestions for dates - August 13, 14, 20, or 21? 5pm or later in Kearney Mesa area?

 

TT- I'll adopt all those caches..even SPAM as I have visited twice in one day. What's another trip?

Anybody that can launch a pumpkin over 4000 feet is OK in my book! Back in Roscoe we used to shoot taters with this PVC contraption that looked like a bazooka gun. We never measured how far they went, but they disappeared from our sight. Anyhow, TT has something to look forward to! :laughing:

Side issue:  fellow SD-ites,  I was out at Radar Enforced yesterday and bumped into one of eatern geocashing cousins.  She left 5 TB's in the cache.

Side Side Issue: In a class I am taking, I learned that Home Depot is proposing building a store where "Radar Enforced" is.

 

Sure would be a shame to see that big open space turned into a parking lot . . . :P

 

Imagine the traffic on that already traffic-clogged road . . . :rolleyes:

Wow, I've just found the best download/extension for Firefox!

Have a look at this thread. Or if you can't be bothered, let me explain what it does - you download a Firefox extension called Greasemonkey, and then you can use scripts to do things to web pages before they load onto your screen. The guy who wrote that thread did it so that gc.com cache pages in the UK link to Ordnance Survey maps (equiv to USGS, I suppose), since Big Green hasn't paid for decent maps of the UK, and if you look on a cache page there (like this one, nearest my Dad's house), the geocaching.com maps are crap. OS 1:25000 maps, on the other hand, are fantastic.

 

The best thing for us folks over here is that it also adds links directly onto the cache page (including caches over here) for Google Maps, Satellite, and Google Earth! Before gc.com has got around to it!

If you're interested, click the link to this thread.

And after you've installed Greasemonkey, restart Firefox, then right-click here, and install the script. When you go to a cache page, you'll have a Google map of the cache location right at the top. SaWEEEET!
