Guest The 19th Posted October 3, 2001 Posted October 3, 2001 Welcome courtney! There are quite a bit of caches now in the Sacramento area! They all range from the easy walk by the river to the mentally and physically demanding caches. Is your primary purpose for the trip just geocaching? I'm pretty sure many of us could suggest a few local caches that would give a good "flavor" of the area... say, some around the Folsom Lake area for day 1 and day 2 would be along the American River or something? ------------------ Lawrence Rillera Elk Grove, CA Quote

Guest McIrish Posted October 3, 2001 Posted October 3, 2001 Tis a sad day in Brier Rabbit's Patch...it was archived today. It was time to let the plants grow back and the berries to grow for next year. They were doing a lot of work around the area and I was afraid the cache would be accidently discovered. Thanks to all who participated in my first hide!!! I will replant this cache someplace appropriate for winter!!! Quote

Guest mav Posted October 3, 2001 Posted October 3, 2001 Hi everyone! Wow I don't check the board for a week and you all go nuts lol! First, Ron, CONGRATS!! WHOOHOO! You deserve the break- those kids will make you old before your time. I know most of you would prefer I let sleeping dogs lie- but I have to respond to some things on board 2. Lawrence- your views were extremely well written IMO. I too have to stop and remind myself every now and then that this is NOT A RACE. Stats don't really mean anything. Just because one person has 60 caches and another has 10, is one a better person? Nicer to kittens and little old ladies? Drinks less and goes to church more I don't think so! Maybe one just has more balance in their life? Maybe one has health problems they choose not to share with everyone? Numbers don't tell the story. People's attitudes and respect for each other- that's what counts. I personally don't appreciate a new poster who comes to the boards just to put down someone else. ESPECIALLY when the person being put down is the same guy who personally responds to new cachers who ask for some BTDT (Been There Done That) advice. ESPECIALLY when the person has gone out of his way to check other's chaches if needed. ESPECIALLY when most of us think he is a really great person. Running to do six caches in a day, but not enjoying the area around any of them is missing the point I think.(not thinking of anyone in particular, just the whole race mentality). We went out to do Hawk's Nest- forgot about caching since the park was so fabulous and the next thing you knew- we were being kicked out because the park was closing! It took us another 3 weeks to get back out there- but the cache wasn't the reward- the park was. Being first or 101st, who really cares? If that is important to you- then okay but as for me I have other priorities. I think we just need to agree that each of us might get some different reward out of caching- some enjoy the hunt, some the goodies, some the outdoors, and yes some the "thrill" of being first. You can put me in the "in need of FREE or nearly free family fun" oh and definitely the "need more exercise" categories lol! Yes Lawrence the kids slow us down- but hey another few years and they won't give us the time of day! However, they will have fabulous memories, and they will know we thought they were special enough to spend time with Okay I will shut up now ! mav Quote

Guest The 19th Posted October 3, 2001 Posted October 3, 2001 Ok, now I feel like I've been dealing with little things after reading some of the other Topics in the W/SW forum. For example: this topic is something that caught my eye, and I was wondering if there is anything in place for our local parks and recreational areas. There are so many caches now, It's hard to imagine that some ranger hasn't found one by accident or spied a 'cacher off-trail, near a container with a strange looking device in their hand. I would hate to think that we're unknowingly tarnishing the reputation of Geocaching in our area. Does anyone have any information about their experiences with park officials? I, for one, would love to know their position on the game at least. Whoa... I've been getting waaaay too serious at this time these past few nights! ------------------ Lawrence Rillera Elk Grove, CA Quote

I am going to suggest the following. Go to the CSUS Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma (see Submarine Cache for directions) but instead of renting a kayak, rent bikes. Then do a loop around Lake Natoma and hit a couple caches. Going counter-clockwise you first hit Cycle Time. Then further north you can stop at Chevy?s for Margarita?s. Rumor has it that this is where the Pony Express Riders quenched their thirst after dropping the mail off in Folsom. But I digress. Further north you can find Fire It Up Baby. Cross the river/lake to the north side. On the north side there are probably more than you will have time for, Kitchen Cache, HardRock1, HardRock3, Rock Piles, Dis-Orienteering, More Rock Piles, Horsin A Round, Go Fishing, More Rock Piles, and Honey Do. (Hey Folks, Did I miss any between Hazel Ave and Rainbow Bridge?) Then pedal across on the Hazel Avenue bridge (at least I assume that would be the best way to cross Lake Natoma at this location ? maybe a nice biker dude will confirm?) If you felt a need to rent a kayak you could hunt Submarine cache and Treasure Island cache. Chevy?s is located near the first bridge you come to. If you want I can get you the longitude and latitude. You should bring a long bike lock/cable from Santa Clara because most of these caches require some walking off the path. I have not found all of these, but I would recommend Rock Piles, Cycle Time, and HardRock3. And of course Chevy?s. Have Fun, Glenn95630[ ] Quote

Have there been any caches that encourage finders to visit the park areas during closed hours? If yes, I would assume that the park officials would take the position that geocaching is not waived from the park hours rule. Comments? Or is this something we shouldn't discuss? If darkness is a necessary element of a cache hunt. This time of year, it is very dark at 6 a.m. Maybe the cache descriptions could be modified to encourage early morning visits. Quote

Guest jeo Posted October 4, 2001 Posted October 4, 2001 I was out searching for "South Side 2" at dusk and a ranger came out to close the gates but they check first to see if anybody is still there. He asked me what was going on and I told him about geocaching. He said he had heard about it and asked if there was one around there. I told yes but I hadn't found it yet. We chatted for a little then I left. I think that if we respect the areas and the rangers, then there will be no problems. [This message has been edited by jeo (edited 04 October 2001).] Quote
Guest Ron Streeter Posted October 4, 2001 Posted October 4, 2001 Jeo... I read your post before you edited it and I went to look at this web page. I think that placements DO need to be considered carefully. I'm sure we've all put caches in parks that might have a problem if the park administrators KNEW they were there. Even if we "clandestinely" place them, we can safeguard their existence by putting them in remote parts of the park and hiding them in such a way they won't make themselves part of the environment by falling out of a tree (as an example). http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=4131 Quote
Guest jeo Posted October 4, 2001 Posted October 4, 2001 If I remember correctly that was at a nature area and not a park. (BBQ Walnut Cache) Quote
Guest Ron Streeter Posted October 4, 2001 Posted October 4, 2001 Jeo... I use the term "park" in regard to any area administered by an agency which oversees its care. There are city "parks", county parks, regional parks, state parks, national parks, and maybe some others I have forgotten. To me they are all "parks". Oak Grove Regional Park in Stockton has a "public" area and a "nature" area, but both are administered by the same agency. The point I was trying to make is that as cache hiders and hunters we have to make as little impact as possible and I think (imho) draw as little attention to ourselves as possible....at least with park management. I think it is fine to promote the sport through r/tv and newspapers (I am doing that now), but I also believe that no matter how responsibly one presented geocaching to a governing body, one would meet with resistance to our activity. I know there are people who request and receive permission before hiding, but I also know of people who have requested permission and who have been turned down. This topic has been discussed at length and is available for review in the forums. [This message has been edited by Ron Streeter (edited 04 October 2001).] Quote
Guest jeo Posted October 4, 2001 Posted October 4, 2001 My point is that some areas (including nature areas) are closed to certain activities whereas parks are usually open to a wider range eg. bicycles, joggers , horses etc. Quote

Guest The 19th Posted October 5, 2001 Posted October 5, 2001 Just a friendly reminder to all those that have hidden caches. With cooler weather and rain/dew/frost a likely possibility, you may want to check up on your caches. --- After those rains and lightningstorm the last week of September, out of curiousity I went and checked up on "There's a Marsh In My Backyard". (ok, ok! I was testing the GPS V) The water was quite high - a few more rainy days would certainly have caused the lake to flow over the small bridge. More water unfortunately spawns more mosquitos... Cooler weather has brought more green growth to the area. There were sections of the dirt path that had collapsed in on themselves due to their proximity to the lake. I was just amazed at how much the terrain changed! Well, aside from these things, there were quite a lot more water fowl. It was so noisy in that area from all the birds in the reeds - I'm guessing this would also be a good time to visit Cosumnes River Preserve again. ------------------ Lawrence Rillera Elk Grove, CA Quote

The story on caching which appeared in the Sunday the 7th issue of the Tri-Valley Herald also appeared in the Alameda Times, Oakland Tribune and the bay area paper The Argus. This link.... http://www.timesstar-ang.com/ will take you to the main page. Then you have to click on the "local" link on the left side of the page. When you get to that page, you click on the drop down box that allows you to look at past issues. Select the October 7,2001 issue. When you get to that spot you can scroll down to the eighth article which deals with "treasure hunting" if you have an interest in reading about Mike & Connie's Crows Loop cache in an area south of Stockton. Guest MikieP Posted October 11, 2001 Posted October 11, 2001 Here is an FYI to Sacramento Area Cachers, particularly if you are interested in knowing a little more about GPS basics. REI is holding a GPS class this Saturday, October 13, 2001, from 2:00-5:30pm, at their Sacramento store near Cal Expo. The class is pretty basic, and the focus is on navigating with a GPS and a map. The cost is $7.50 for REI members and $10.00 for non-members, and advanced registration is required. I took this class before I got started GeoCaching, and although it is basic, there is good information provided. The class is limited to 20 people, so if you have an interest you might want to call 924-8900 and make sure there is room before you trek down there .... unless you are headed that way to do Cache on a Stick, Smiley, or even the Green part of End of the Rainbow. Guest kimbeattie Posted October 11, 2001 Posted October 11, 2001 When to Retire a Cache? Maybe this should be a topic of its own, but I decided to put it in this topic because I know it gets read. I've been hearing about cache placers who have pulled a cache or are thinking about pulling a cache because "it hasn't been visited in X number of days." Why would someone want to pull or retire a cache? The only reason I can think of would be because the area around the cache had become overused due to Geocaching activity. But to pull a cache just because it hasn't been visited in a while? That seems to be to be short sighted. Sacramento Geocachers are not the only Geocachers in California or the United States! If a cache that hasn't been visited in a while is pulled, that's a guarantee that it will never be visited again! And what happens when an out of town Geocachers comes into to town? I guess what I'm trying to say is that unless you are concerned about abuse of the area around the Geocache, leave the cache out there, even if it hasn't been visited in six months! Maybe tomorrow will be the day it gets visited again. Just my two cents. Quote
