With this feature, you can view your friends list from your profile.

If you want to add more friends to your friends list, you can do so from your friends page on Geocaching.com.

OK, it doesn't hurt but it does not bring anything special to me either. I know who is and who is not on my friends list anyway.

Seems incomplete to show the list but not be able to add to it from the app. Requiring the user to go to the website to take the next logical step (adding a friend) is not an ideal user experience.

My last "friend" in the list even asked why he was still there, so removed him too.  We all know who our friends are.

A few promotions ago I received multiple requests that I be a "friend" in it. I never heard of these people before. Other countries even.

Guess the hobby's idea of friends is a lot different than mine...

I am a fairly new cacher, but am really into this and know almost everything. For this, I think GCHQ should make a link to your friend’s accounts straight from there. Otherwise, I use the website for everything except navigating to caches.

Does anyone use the geocaching friends list for anything?  There was pressure to add friends years ago based on some promotion that involved points and such, but I couldn't tell you who is or isn't on my friends list.

My friends list is on my phone in my Contacts app.

Yep.  When many finally had phones, phone-a-friend really took off.  We have a lot on contacts.    :)

The other 2/3rds was the only one to use them, chat mostly, sometimes giving hints on our (now gone) caches, and though no longer caching for a while, still plays online games with them.

I save them for emergency JIC I'm injured, knowing they're nearby.  My phones usually off when I'm in the woods.

One time I was literally at the end of my rope, and a call saved my can.  :D      I've done it for others as well..

Commentary on the feature as implemented

The friend list links to each friend's profile page, but there no useful information on the profile page in the app. I think that's the biggest problem with this. Suggested change would be to either vastly improve the in-app profile page for other players, or add a link to the profile page on the website.

Alternative take on friends list

A friend list on the app could act as a phone quickdial; that is, it seems like going through the friend list would be a fast way to start sending a message to a person I'm most likely to want to talk to. With that use case in mind, maybe friend list would work as part of the Messages page instead?

That being said:

  • I have real life contact info for almost everyone on my friends list, and I'm much more likely to use that.
  • If I want help with a specific cache from someone for whom I have no other contact info, I would instead go to Activity --> (logs by) friends --> friend's profile --> send message

Alternative take on friends feature in the app

I believe the "main" intended use of the Friend feature  is to have your friends' logs show up on your Dashboard's Activity feed. So implementing this Activity feed in the app seems like the logical place to start bringing the Friends feature to the app.

Adding friends makes it easier to see who of your friends has found a cache you are actively looking for in the event you are wanting to see who you can PAF or see their log notes. The list itself though at least on the app isn't very useful in its current implementation.

Friends list only shows basic profile information of friends, cant click in to see what they’ve found. Apart from that, great feature.

Once this is fully released, would love to have more visibility of caches found by Friends when viewing their profiles in the app

What would be really cool is a feature that lets you see caches that you and a friend / multiple friends (friend being defined as being on the geocaching friend list) have either both found or neither has found.  It'd help to plan out a geo-adventure.
