With this feature, you can select "Siri Shortcuts'' in settings by enabling the following shortcuts:

  • Search by GC code
  • Search for a trackable
  • Open draft logs
  • Open profile

Turn on this feature and select a shortcut to open the "Add to Siri" menu. Personalize the voice prompt for Siri to open the shortcut.

While it's nice to have it pull up right to Search by GC it doesn't look like it can fill in the code if you speak it all at once i.e. "Hey Siri, Search Geocache GC30" (unless I'm doing something wrong).

I am most likely too old fashioned but I never came to like Siri and the sometimes strange things she offered. Anyhow I decided to try it. Siri directs my every time out on google and the web instead of searching within geocaching.com. Thus she finds nothing. This is obviously not fool proof enough for my usage , since I get fooled. I know many use Siri so this may be a big improvement to them. Perhaps I learn to use it some day too.

This is not the same thing as Siri's search features, it's the new "Shortcuts" features which let you automate tasks across different apps on your iOS device. For example you might want to create a "shortcut" so if a friend texted you a GC code, you could tap on it in the Messages app, and have it automatically open that cache in the Geocaching app. That's just a basic example, there are limitless things you could do with this, if you're into any kind of automation to simplify your workflow/life on your phone.

The name "Siri Shortcuts" is misleading - the idea is that you can verbally tell Siri to run your Shortcut for you.

Most of the local cachers know that we take detailed notes on how and where a cache is hidden.  With that being said, we get lost of messages for help on finding caches.  Being able to have a 'shortcut' to the cache page is pretty neat.  Can I copy and paste, sure, but a tap is much better and faster!  We'd use it.

I have no idea how this feature works and could not figure it out just from what's in the app. I remain unsure about what it is meant to do, i.e. would I have to issue voice commands or is it some kind of phone automation.

(I have not used Siri or Shortcuts, but I am generally technically competent, computer literate etc.)

Personally I don’t want to use Siri to access Geocaching. It takes to much time. What’s more interesting is if I will be able to create automations/scripts using geocaching in the Shortcuts app. Think of an shortcut that automatically takes you to the nearest geocache, or another that creates as list of caches based on certain criterias. For this to work, the geocaching app would need to provide info to the shortcuts app, like “get X amount of geocaches around X location”, and also let the shortcuts app provide info to the geocache app, like “open cache page for GCXXXXX” and “create a list with name X that contains [INPUT]”

Certainly a nerdy  feature but more useful than voice control.

We have made the decision to retire the Experimental feature of Siri shortcuts on iOS on May 31st.
The majority of geocachers are not using this feature and we are not currently planning to expand its functionality.
