Can you transfer 66sr topo maps to 64st?

Recommended Posts

If you have both a GPSMAP 66sr and an older 64st, can you copy the topo map from the 66sr to your 64st, so you would have them on both? (I'm a non-technical user, and assume that the 66sr topo maps are newer/better. Is that correct?)  If it is possible, will my 64st be able to "read" the 66sr topo map? Is there any benefit to doing that, or would that be a bad idea? Thank you for any responses.

The GPSMAP 66sr uses TopoActive maps that are updated twice a year, while the GPSMAP 64st came pre-loaded with a (now) much older Garmin Topo map that is not updated.

It is standard practice for Garmin to 'lock' these maps to the hardware they were originally pre-loaded on, and this prevents either device from reading or using a pre-loaded map from the other.

The TopoActive maps do have additional information and functionality that was never available at the time the firmware for the older GPSMAP 64 series was created, so even if the TopoActive map were successfully copied, it is very likely not all functionality would be available or usable.

FYI - Garmin TopoActive maps are 'slightly modified' OSM maps with additional Garmin POI and other proprietary data added. If you want newer maps for your GPSMAP 64st that are 'similar' to the TopoActive maps found on your GPSMAP 66sr, you can download and copy a wide variety of OSM maps for free.

For additional information and many map source links, see the 'Maps' page at GPSrChive.

This is news to me. What functionality do these maps have that older GPS units won't be able to take advantage of?
