California City Event - GPS Related Assistance Needed

Recommended Posts

Groundspeak was contacted by the people managing this event. They requested some help from experienced GPS users. The event is an enduro and fun run in the California City desert taking place on Saturday, June 14, 2003.

If you are interested, here are some details:

This is not a race nor a speed event, but an event involving navigation and driving skills within the prescribed parameters. Classes are for street legal, trucks, SUVs, Jeeps, Hummers, Bajas, etc. and/or green/red sticker off highway vehicles.

Two Divisions of competitors are offered: GPS Entries and Non-GPS. Those who entered in the GPS Classes will be provide coordinates for the entire course which is about 60-plus miles. The challenge is to find your way around the course and checkpoints with nothing more than GPS coordinates. Non-GPS entries will be provided route books.

If you are interested in providing assistance or participating, please contact them at 760-373-2198, 760-578-6258 or e-mail to info@bpmotorsports.net.

Also, if you have any questions, please feel free to post them here as they'll be following this thread, if any.

Happy Geocaching!

Sorry, we were informed that some of you were asking questions, but we did not know where this forum was. Thanks to Brian Roth for pointing us in the right direction.

The help we need is to verfy that we have indeed set up correct waypoints for the 50-mile course. We went around the entire course and marked it with what we call "tulip" notes for those who will be participating in the Non-GPS Classes; and also by logging waypoints at mayor turns and intersections of the course (for the GPS Classes). I Believe we have 32 waypoints for the 50-mile route. We used two GPS units: Garmin and Magellan. At each point we checked with each other and although each GPS had different coordinates, they were close enough that we think we have good settings. Now we want to test them again at least two or maybe three more times before giving the coordinates (waypoints) to participants.

We also need Checkpoint personnel to man, from three to five Checkpopints along the way.

We are experienced in laying out race courses but have not done anything of this type with GPS, so we know we can always use some help, (and probably learn the right terminology).

Next week, possibily Tuesday and/or Wednesday, we'll be going out again to verify the course. It's all dirt and trails that you'll only be able to average from 5 to 6 m.p.h. in very tight and hilly sections, while in other sections we'll hold you down to about 30 m.p.h. (you can go much faster). Since IT'S NOT A RACE but an enduro, it will take skill in navigating and driving to keep the posted average speeds and "zero" the checks. Thos who arrive too early or late to a check will be penalized certain points and those who arrive on time plus/minus 1to 2 minutes will earn bonus points. The final results will be based on that.

By the way, although we recommend 4-WD, the entire course was laid out in 2-WD to make sure everyone can make it.

The web site: http://www.bpmotorsports.net - The first page has most of the information flyer, entry and press. Shortly it will also have details about the event.

If you are interested in participating, or helping out, or being part of the officiating, please contact us.

Thank you.

BIG MISTAKE! -- BRAIN FADE AS THEY SAY...

We erroneously posted on our website, our flyers and entry forms that the "Non-GPS" Classes entry was $65.00. THAT'S WRONG!

ALL CLASSES ARE $50.00

"I want that person fired!" was heard throughout the office until we found out that it was Lou Peralta (our boss) who made the mistake

Boy is he red-faced.

Please check out our website and links below for faster access.

Sorry

Disappointed. We had heard that lots of people were trying to get in touch with us, but when we posted our various ways to get in touch with us, not one word has been heard since. We are still here and ready to put on a great event for those with GPS and also non-GPS. Try to make it if you can.

See you soon.

A Great Event.

It sounds like fun. So I'm checking to see if I have time available. I'm also checking to see if any other Central Valley Cachers are interested. Looks like the ride should take about 3 hours plus whatever surprise detours. Is that about it for the trail time?
