GpsMap 64 or 65

Recommended Posts

We have purchased a  Garmin GPSMap 64SX which comes with TopoActive North America. This program is advertised to include detailed street maps and automobile routing.

When we turned the unit on "out of the box" it would show a route by road when the activity is set to "Automobile". Did this at the store's parking lot.

After loading geocaches, this ability went away, and auto routing became available only when the activity is set to "Cycling", which will lead you to bike paths.

When in "Automobile" setting, it says "Detailed maps do not supported automotive routing".

Has anyone experienced this or found the correct setting to navigate to a cache by road ?

Might you be kind enough to point me to where this is stated clearly and explicitly on the Garmin website?

What was the firmware version when you first tested in the parking lot, and what is the current firmware version of your GPSMAP 64sx?

Yes.

Basically, Garmin is (mostly) quietly removing the ability to navigate by automobile or motorcycle using any OSM based maps on their devices. You can see an example of where they accidentally published this action when you inspect the firmware change log history for the eTrex x2x (v2.60)

The official response given when queried is that they can not guarantee the accuracy of the routing data in OSM based mapping, and therefore must disable automotive and motorcycle routing as a safety precaution, and they further recommend using their very own City Navigator maps for this purpose.

Funny thing is, the City Navigator maps also include a warning that Garmin can not be held accountable for any errors or mistakes that may lead to inaccurate routing when using their maps.

Thus, it would seem:

  1.  Garmin is, at best, 'enhancing the truth' to achieve a specific goal, which appears to be selling more City Navigator maps and/or Automobile navigation devices
  2.  Garmin have removed features from many devices that were originally available and functional, without the users consent, in most cases without any notification
  3.  Garmin may have opened the door to a class action lawsuit should anyone feel the need to make a few attorneys even more wealthy than they already are

Oh no, please do not let them disable automotive routing for OSM. I use it frequently for navigating to a (first) Geocache.

That requires me to buy the Garmin CityNavigator maps that are tight to a MicroSD card (because of their hopeless software protection). This renders my existing 32GB microSD full of OSM useless. These OSM's will not fit on the supplied CityNavigater MicroSD and I don't want to swap MicroSD cards on the go (which would in no time lead to a malfunctioning MicroSD card slot door).

Well, RGSCHMIDT, that is EXACTLY what Garmin are doing to all of their handheld units. You will continue to see more and more reports of users having issues with routing using OSM maps and not understanding why until someone informs them that Garmin has been removing this feature from all of their devices.

Going to cost them a lot of business, many of us will now be forced to abandon Garmin and move to using our smartphones instead.

Good Call, Garmin! (STUPID)

I think this worrisome issue you already mentioned last year.

Do you or gpsrchive keep track of devices/firmware updates regarding this IMHO significant degradation?

It would be great if anybody could test if all OSM based maps are affected or only the OSM maps provided and delivered by Garmin itself.

Thus far, only in the firmware release notes for the eTrex x2x has Garmin admitted to this, yet many users of other popular handheld devices have been reporting the same behavior after recent updates were completed. So, other than the eTrex x2x, there is no documentation beyond various forum posts at this time.

Thanks. May I ask where such reports can be found?
