jonboy
I'm driving down to Orlando Airport from Gainesville saturday and wondered if there were any travel bug hotels enroute where I could snag a TB or two for transport to NY. I met Greg Smith in Gainesville and he turned me on to a couple of primo caches just south of Ocala, "Hole in the Rock" and "Greenway Rocks", no hard core spelunking or scuba gear required, but a lot of fun for those seeking something different. Thewoodser
I don't think there is an OFFICIAL TB Airport in Orlando. There are a few caches along the way that have a TB in them tho. The zip code for the airport is 32827 Quote Link to comment
Blue Man
My office is only a few miles from the Orlando airport. I'm intrigued by the idea of operating a travel bug hotel, but am not sure how to go about it. Any suggestions? Quote Link to comment
jonboy
The concept is to put out a cache frequented by travellers in order to facilitate long distance moves of bugs. Putting them around airports would be ideal, but having a secure location to cache that would not raise suspicions of law enforcement is a problem. A New Jersey cacher wanted to put one near Newark Airport, but the above concerns caused him to put it near the junction of two interstates (New York International Travel Bug Hotel & Casino GCA56B), but so far it has attracted only local cachers, so in that respect it has not been successful. I visted a cache in Hyde Park (London Travel Bug Drop Box GC6E96) that has been very sucessful in attracting international cachers, but conversley, few local cachers visit it, so cachers trying to get travel bugs to the UK sometimes find them brought right back to the US, as I recently did with another american Travel Bug. Orlando Airport is not in a particularily built up area (at least compared to NY/NJ), so it may be that a person with local knowledge could find a cache location easily accessable to the highway (say a rest stop with woods or a local park not far fropm the highway). Travel bugs tend to be large, so it would need to be a larger container. 50 Cal ammo boxes are ideal, but they do look a lot like bombs, so I would stick with clear tupperware. I was surprised to find there was not such a TB Hotel in Orlando, and I think you would be doing the caching community a service if you could put one out and promote it on the forums. Thewoodser
The closer the better. I will fly to FLorida for the holidays and I have a layover in Dallas/Ft Worth. The problems is the Bug Airport is about 1.5 miles from the airport. I would not have the time to get a cab, hit the cache and make it back through security in time to get back on the plane. Anyone work in an airport that could host the airport? Quote Link to comment
Team Dragon Racing
problem with oia is simple there are no parks near enought to be consided for a hotel that i know of slith Quote Link to comment
Blue Man
Actually, I know of some areas for the physical cache. I'm just not sure about what is required from the owner (me) in order to maintain it. Quote Link to comment
jonboy
I don't see that they need much more maintenance than any other cache, the real problem is getting permission for the placement. Some cache placers take the attitude that they must have specific permission for each cache, while others maintain that as long as the cache conforms with the land use regulations for that property, specific notification of the authorites about each cache is not required. This is a subject of hot debate on other forums, but caches are placed using either standard, it really is up to you. Bear in mind that because it may well see more traffic than most caches, advance permission could save trouble later. Quote Link to comment
wimseyguy
I had just posted a query elsewhere in the forum (The Hunt...) asking about other airport TB caches. I saw one near Denver's airport that I will be visiting next month with the Hippy Hippo in tow; and was wondering if there were many others out there. I have scouted out a suitable tree behind the Hilton between RDU and I-40 and plan on placing it tomorrow if I have time. Be careful what you wish for! Quote Link to comment
infosponge
Here's one in Tampa: TPA Airport Travel Bug Portal I found a park near the airport and used a large plastic jug with a very wide mouth (biscotti container). It's worked out very well...lots of bugs moving in and out and visitors from other places. Quote Link to comment
The Merman
Here in the Uk we have several Bug Hotels at Airports. At Gatwick Airport where the security is HUGE! we have a bug hotel which is only about 300 yards from the terminal entrance and it has never been compromised.Gatwick TB Hotel. Perhaps you could use this as a model? Chris I woke this morning and my boat was not rocking...for one horrid moment I thought I lived in a house! Quote Link to comment
welch
I must say I'm rather surprized that in seven months this cache hasn't been picked up by some airport employee. I guess having an wooded area nearby helps quote:Originally posted by The Merman:Here in the Uk we have several Bug Hotels at Airports.
